What Battista was doing could be at the heart of why LaFontaine left. Could. That's the importance of these little clues. Why did Pegula hire him in the first place? Was he lurking around LaFontaine as Pegula's eyes and ears? (He did accompany LaFontaine on a trip to interview GMs.) Running around notifying Nolan, telling Vinz he was playing and claiming he "signed" him, potentially exaggerating his title in an email, they're just some wafts of smoke. We're all trying to piece things together.

I think that the guy just got a job in which he supports and reports to the hockey people. Nothing more than that. The fact that he was the guy to run down to tell Ted Nolan to get Miller and Ott off the ice was just a function of who was around to do it because Murray was busy doing his job. It could have been you or me if we had been standing around. The fact that guys at the News elevated what was something an errand boy does into something else is humorous and sadly typical.

Takes the Vinz tweet and turns it into an act of insurrection. <_<. Puh-leeze. Gleason is more interested into stoking flames than reporting news.

    PTR

Mole hill meet mountain. It is funny how he cannot resist the snark. He took what I presume was intended as an attempt at humor (and interpreted as such by everyone in the world -- outside of the Buffalo News building).

I have little understanding as to what Battista does. In the end, it does not make any difference. Tim Murray is the GM and is in charge -- not Battista.

WTF is it with Bucky Gleason? He ran one GM out of town and he's looking for another trophy?

Bucky has had a vendetta against the Sabres for so long (Harrington also has had an ax to grind). Neither one of these guys comes anywhere close to the standard that Jim Kelley set.

It is clear that Bucky has "taken sides" - he did so a long time ago.

Regarding PLF, one thing that sticks out to me is that the Islanders have erased all mention of one of their greatest players. Whether PLF was an unpaid assistant and only in that role for 40 days, one wonders what a guy could have done to cause an organization to go out of their way to to act as though the guy never existed.

On the other hand, the Pegulas have a reputation for being wonderful people to work for. Ask people such as Lindy Ruff or Steve Ott (people no longer with the team) what they think of the Pegulas. The Pegulas were the ones that went out of their way and had the idea to hire PLF. You do not go and hire someone to be an executive with the team (someone who was not on anyone's radar other than the Pegulas) with the desire to screw the guy over.

Nevertheless, the guys from the News always have the knee jerk reaction to "choose sides" against the Sabres and its ownership -- because it fits the narrative that they have been pushing for so long.

The Pegulas even kept Darcy around when guys like Sully (and the rest) were clamoring for them to fire Darcy on day one. Given their track record of showing loyalty to people such as Darcy (when they could have fired him as their first move to garner PR points with the News and others), one wonders what could have happened to cause this to end so quickly (as with the Islanders). Perhaps, Paul Hamilton's comments about the public and private personas are correct.

Given the above, I am going to give the benefit of any doubt to the people who have put their money where their mouths are both in terms of the hockey team and the community.

On the other hand, we know that guys like Bucky and Harrington and Sully are not going to give them the benefit of the doubt because it simply does not fit their narrative.

    Just my two cents.

  4. FWIW - I was impressed with the fact that Drew Stafford stood in front of a puck to prevent an empty net goal in the dying moments of the game last night.

I realize a lot of people do not like him on this board, but what he did at the end of the game shows that the guy cares.

  5.

The Pegula hate is beyond weird to me. It is his team if he wants to make himself the GM then fine. it is his property. Despite this, would people still rather have TG? No. They wouldn't. Pegula is good for this team. I'm not going to leap to any conclusions about who the villain is and how TP is a monster in sheep's clothing etc. It is pathetic to do that. We all know nothing, but are quite happy to bitch about people because some have pre-conceived ideas and conspiracy theories.

All we know is something happened to make PLF resign after a few months. PLF has done this before in NY

I see no reason Pegula needs to be at any press-conference. People think he meddles and then doesn't show up to deal with the fall out. but what if, he doesn't actually meddle and isn't at any press conference because that is the job of the people he hired

I agree. The guy has been great for the community and has put his money where his mouth is. We are lucky that the Pegulas own the team. They also are willing to ride out the rebuild rather than applying band aids like a lot of other teams.

I have no problem with him not finding it necessary to speak with Sully, Bucky, Harrington et al who always seem to be driving their own narrative.

As for Nolan, I am not concerned about whether he would want to remain as coach. The Pegulas gave him another lifeline. The guy has got to be smart enough to realize that he has burned enough bridges in his life and that, other than Latvia, there have been no teams (NHL or otherwise) that have been banging down his door.

  6. Hamilton and Bulldog just painting a not so pretty picture of Patty. Inferring really hard to work with, big ego, different off camera than on.

    This seems to make sense.

The fact that this happened the way it did and the timing leads me to believe that there is credence to the suggestion that there is a difference between the public and private PLF.

The Miller/Ott trade had to happen also. We could not afford to lose them for nothing. If either really want to re-sign with Sabres, nothing prevents them from doing so in July.

  7. PFL turned down Pegula's original offer to be GM since he admitted that he wasn't qualified. He then hired a (presumably) qualified GM to preside over personnel moves. Why then should the unqualified guy (PLF) have veto power of personnel moves? He shouldn't. Hire the GM and let him run the team.

This looks to be all about PLF not being able to handle differences in opinion over personnel decisions. And, I don't think it was just the Miller trade. I think this also has to do with the future moves that we'll read about shortly.

BTW - Craig Patrick (another qualified guy) is sticking around. That speaks volumes.

What you say makes sense to me.

If this is all about the Miller trade and PLF wanting to keep him, PLF is just plain wrong. There is no way we could take chance that we get nothing for him or Ott (as much as I would have liked to keep both). Miller tipped off his intentions when he sold his Buffalo home last year. If either Miller or Ott want to return, there is nothing stopping them from signing with Sabres in July.

Unfortunately, the best option we had now was to get something for both of these guys now. PLF should have realized this. Moreover, PLF was the guy who chose TM over every other guy he interviewed. At least, he lasted longer than the 40 days with the Islanders.

  8. I am so excited, and I know my Father is partying tonight...up in heaven. <3

My Pops passed away on June 18th, 2008...just shortly before the Sabres drafted Tyler Myers and Tyler Ennis. (My name is Tyler)

My Father was a business man, he lived in Pennsylvania, he loved Penn State...his name was Terry, he is buried in his Sabres attire.

I believe it is destined to happen...and I believe the odds got that much better today, and we are on our way! And when it happens, I will cry my eyes out...as it will be the most bitter-sweet moment of my entire life. (Some of my Father's last words to me were about how he could not stop thinking about how he would never get to see the Sabres play for a Cup, let alone another game, at all.)

But, I know he is watching now... ;)

Wonderful post. Thank you for sharing.

  9. One thing I completely missed: Kevin Devine's future. It wasn't addressed today. No questions about it. Will Murray get his own assistant GM?

It was very surprising to me that our stellar Buffalo media did not ask that question. I suppose I should not be shocked. There were so many questions that were not asked. I was stunned when they asked whether there were any more questions and there was silence.
  10.

I will join the chorus: Well put, sir.

I'm going to admit that my understanding/knowledge of CP is limited -- a blind spot for whatever reason. (It's this board that turned me from a Sabres fan to a hockey fan ... so, I guess I'll blame the board. )

Whither those who suggested that Pegula didn't have enough of a hockey brain trust at the top and that his failure to put such a trust in place was suggestive of some fundamental deficiency in his Owner-DNA?

But mostly I just like to use that word: Whither.

    X!

    :w00t:

I dislike Graham more than anyone at TBN -- perhaps in no small part because I know a thing or two about why he "chose" to leave his gig at espn.com and return to TBN (presumably taking a pay cut and loss of stature in the course of so doing). I won't tell stories out of school, but suffice to say: It's my opinion that the guy is a first class, unmitigated d o u c h e.

You certainly got my attention with the Graham comments. Interesting
  11. Tim Murray seems like a great hire. I also like the fact that he seems like a no nonsense guy who will not put up with the BS from the Buffalo News guys. He has been groomed for this day his entire life.

As an aside, except for Paul Hamilton, Tim Graham, and John W, most of the guys who cover the Bills and Sabres are horrible. To think how far the quality of the Buffalo News has gone down since guys like Jim Kelley and Vic Carucci. Bucky, Sully, and Bucky/Sully protégé Harrington are horrible.

I also absolutely love the Craig Patrick hire. Great addition to the Sabres. Miracle in Buffalo.

  12. What exactly was Grier thinking there? If Dallas scored, that would have been all on him.

And on the other side...what was Guerin thinking. Did anyone else see that? He had the puck right in front of the net, decent angle, Biron didn't know where the puck was, he looked for a pass, and eventually faded to a bad angle and took the shot. Thanks Bill!

Take a look at the replay. After the TSN guy said that, I re-wound the video and Marty had his eyes on the puck the whole time.

  13. Some of you guys have really got to start giving Marty some credit. He had a great game (again). TSN (which was the DirecTv feed) was effusive in their praise.

I am beginning to think that there is nothing that Marty could do to appease some of you guys.

Let's see. He has the franchise record for most consecutive victories. He has the franchise record for most consecutive shutout minutes. We have some pretty darn good goalies in our history.

He also has been integral in this stretch. Let's give him his due.
