  1. Nolan by his own admission is not a X's and O's strategy type of coach. With the amount of younger players coming onto the team in the next year or two, they need a coach that will teach them how to play on the NHL and not just how to grit and compete.

Plus Nolan does not believe in analytics and GMTM appears to be a huge supporter of their use. That combination sealed Nolan's Fate with the team

I think there is some truth to this.

There are those in Buffalo who will always have a soft spot in their hearts for TN. Those people also seem to ignore his history:

    TN's history with Muckler.

Whatever happened to sour his relationship with Hasek. (Someone complained about an earlier poster repeating something that every Buffalo sports fan who has not lived in a cave has heard a million times). Whatever actually happened, it certainly did not sit well with Hasek.

    TN not returning DR's calls.

TN quickly wearing out his welcome on the Island.

GMTM gave him a multi year extension. To me that indicated thatTM had an open mind about TN. For whatever reason, their relationship was not as good as presumably both would have liked (given comments by both). When that happens (and in light of the above history), it is time to cut bait. This is especially so if the GM does not think that the HC is the guy to develop young players.

Even those who love TN have to admit that TN is not what one would call a great strategist etc. His whole MO is "compete level." That is what we love about Ted Nolan. Yet, the question is whether that is enough in today's NHL or with this team.

I suppose how you answer that question probably is predictive of how you feel about the events of today.

P.S. As for the Bills hiring Rex, I love the hire (and I also am a long time out-of-town season ticket holder).

  2.

This is why I like GMTM. I think he quits eight seconds later...via text.

My board of directors can absolutely be involved in every major decision making process. Most of them are finance whizzes who couldn't manufacture a good poop after a garbage plate. The day they force us into a bad manufacturing decision is the day the CEO resigns.

Interesting that when Bucky's buddy PLF left, GMTM stayed. The fact that GMTM stayed (as well as PLF's short tenure on the Island) is further evidence that Bucky just has an axe to grind with the Pegulas. In fact, this is less about him being sexist and more about him being a first class ######.
  3. If I spent millions of dollars on a sports team (NHL, NFL etc.), I darn well would be involved. Why anyone would expect something different from an owner of a multimillion dollar business - whether it is Apple, the Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo Bills, or any other business - is beyond me.

We are fortunate that the Pegulas decided to buy the Sabres and reportedly want to buy the Bills. They have done more for Buffalo than just about anyone I can think of.

Bucky, Sully etc. should not be surprised that they have burned their bridges with both the Bills and Sabres given some of the BS they have written. I will take Terry and Kim Pegula any day of the week over Bucky, Sully, and Harrington.

    Just my two cents.

  4. As ###### as Bucky's stuff is normally, he was the first to have the big changes (Darcy/Rolston out; Nolan in).

He was? I don't remember that. I am not saying you are wrong, I just don't recall him or the other guys at the News breaking many stories regarding the Sabres or Bills.

The guys at the News seemed to have burned all of their bridges with both teams (except for maybe someone who has an ax to grind). Adam Schefter probably has more sources with the Sabres than these guys even though he does not even cover hockey.

  5. In reading this thread, I am very happy that the board sees through Bucky's ######. So many of you have commented exactly the way I would have so I will not repeat them

Bucky (and so many of the other guys at the News) continue to embarrass themselves.

  6.

A lot of speculation that an "under the table" deal was made prior to the World Cup in order to get Green to declare for the USA instead of Germany. Many think that Jurgen gave him a roster spot in this World Cup in exchange for his allegiance (hence Green took Landon's spot).

I have no idea about that, but bringing Green into the team was a good move. Landon did not do himself any favors by disappearing. I also suspect that he was the one who claimed (off the record to reporters) that there was dissension in the team several months ago.
  7. My two cents: This is a bull ###### move that is presumably being pushed by someone behind the scenes. Wasn't it just a few weeks ago when this died and now it has reared its ugly head again.

If you are going to change the rules, you do it for a few years down the road. Teams (including the Sabres) have made decisions based on the present system.

Is it a coincidence that this is happening now in advance of the 2015 draft? Obviously not.

  8.

Really??? Florida controls who and what team picks #1. When they make a draft day deal and drop to 3-5 and still get one of the top 4 forwards maybe you will get the point.

You don't think we could have leveraged the #1 pick into another draft pick or prospect and dropped down to 2,3,or 4 and still picked up one of Bennett, Reinhart, or Draisityl.

Florida is going to get offers. All i am saying is GMTM would have liked to have been the guy listening. Maybe he would have ended up doing nothing but sitting at #2 we will never know.

So, its not as cut and dry as "if we get our guy its 100% irrelevant".

Why are you depressing me like that? It is the old Buffalo luck. It would have been great if we controlled the number one pick and could have done something like what you suggest the Panthers may do. Time will tell whether they trade out of the first pick and we get screwed in the process. I am not as concerned this year (as I would be next year).

Given that I probably would be happy with any of the top three guys (based on what I know now), having the second pick does not really hurt us, but having the first pick would have been useful to pick up more "assets" as hockey GMs like to say.

  9. I had high hopes for Leino (after seeing what he did with the Flyers - especially against us). His time in Buffalo is done though. He needs to move on for both the Sabres and his own career.

The only way I can see him coming back is if they need to spend money on him to get up to the floor. Even with that consideration, I am sure that the Sabres would rather spend the money on someone else to come in and help mentor these young guys.

I also see they trying to sign (and spending a lot of money on) Callahan.

  10. To re-phrase the question, if I were Garth Snow, I would use this year's pick and add what I could to make sure that next year's pick is not subject to the lottery.

If I were the owner of the Islanders, right now, I would lean toward deferring if there was any chance of getting one of the top picks.

  11.

Almost all of the criticisms have been proven illegitimate.

I agree. I like Lindy and was upset that he was fired. He is a better coach than TN in my humble opinion. I really hope TN succeeds. In part, that will depend on whom he will hire as assistants.

    Just my two cents.

As a side note, Rolston never should have fired Patrick. I have a feeling Patrick made him feel insecure about his job. Patrick would have been a better coach than Rolston - but, of course, that is not saying much.

I've had some good luck the few times I've done pizza. I think the key to getting the crust and toppings done simultaneously is to slowly heat your stone to 600 ish and cook high in the dome. I accomplish that with the adjustable rig from ceramicgrillstore.com. I highly recommend their "customer combo" to increase the capacity and versatility of your egg even more. Another great resource for recipes and tips is eggheadforum.com

Spatchcock chicken is awesome. I'd cook dinner every night on my egg if the wife would let me.

    Thanks.

  13.

There is one up this way, in Coral Springs and Pompano. I'll check it out, thanks. I won't get my hopes up on the wings, nobody around here makes a real Buffalo chicken wing (which is why I make them at home now) but I'm dying for a decent pizza. It's really tough to come by up this way.

I think that you will like them, but they are not "Buffalo style." They are great though. The pizza is great as well (thin crust).
  14.

I've done wings every way imaginable at home and for me the unquestionable winner are wings prepared on my Big Green Egg, or a good charcoal grill. I smoke them with apple wood for about an hour using indirect heat at about 350, then I grill them direct for a few minutes each side to get them extra crispy. A simple buffalo style wing sauce of Franks, butter, garlic powder, Worcestershire and celery salt. Perfection. Another key to getting crispy skin from grilled wings is to pat the wings dry with a paper towel and let them sit uncovered in the fridge for a few hours before throwing them on the grill.

I got a Big Green Egg last Summer. I have been meaning to make chicken wings on it, but have not yet. So far, I love the BGE. I am still trying to perfect some things through trial and error. The versatility of the egg is amazing. From ribs, to rib eyes, to everything else. I have been hit or miss with the pizzas. For some reason, I have not been able to bake these consistently well and have had trouble at times with the dough.

As for the wings, there is a place in South Florida (where I live) called Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza. They make great wings. I have been tempted to ask them how they do theirs.

The other thing that I have wanted to try, but have not yet, is the spatchcock turkey and chicken. I hear that comes out well.

If you have any other recipes or go to BGE recipe sites (other than the BGE site itself), please share.

  15. Thanks all. Here's my report on the game:

    - it was a great experience. Certainly it would have been better had the game been closer -- it was 3-0 by halftime and Osasuna only had a couple of scoring chances all game -- but it was still very worthwhile.

    - I really liked the stadium. It wasn't fancy -- e.g. no replays on the scoreboard -- but it was beautiful.

    - I don't mean to gloat, but it was 66 and sunny without a cloud in the sky. I wore shorts and needed sunglasses. Some sunblock would've been nice too.

    - it wasn't sold out -- I'd guess it was 75% - 80% full -- but that is still 75,000 to 80,000 people.

    - it was a civilized crowd. Plenty of older married couples respectably dressed. (And plenty of younger people wearing FC jerseys of course). No tailgating (at least none that I saw -- and I don't think there are any big stadium parking lots) -- and I didn't see any drunken meatheads. There was no sense of danger like you sometimes get at the Ralph.

    - it was also a very passionate and knowledgeable crowd -- plenty of oohs and aahs at the various nuances in the action -- much like a hockey crowd. There was lots of singing and chanting, which was cool. They also did the wave, which wasn't that cool, but they were enjoying it, so whatever.

    - Messi is awesome. Even an amateur like me could tell that he was the best player on the field. He had the hat trick (and they call it that in soccer too, btw) and he set the all time scoring record for FC (which had stood since 1929 or so). Two of his goals were highlight-reel material -- one a Vanek-like deflection in tight and the other a falling-down-sideways blast top shelf. It seemed like rule #1 for FC's offense was that if anyone had the ball on offense approaching the box -- make sure you look for Messi.

    - Something else I really liked: no artificial noise. No blasting "crazy train" or "I've got a feeling" or "sweet Caroline" every 30 seconds. Just the game and the crowd. Also -- almost no concessions in the building. No gouging for food or booze or souvenirs.

    - it was also really easy to take the subway to the game.

    - overall, it's not going to make me a soccer fan, but I would definitely go to another big game, either here or in the UK or pretty much anywhere if one was going on when I was in town, and I would recommend it to any sports fan as a cool experience.

    Barca!

I am glad you had a good time.

A contract that somehow prohibits the franchise from firing the coach? That would be a first, I think.

Your comment was my reaction as well.

TN is getting the guys to play better than they did with Rolston (who had no business coaching in the NHL when he was hired). Nevertheless, let's stop pretending that Ted is Scotty Bowman. We could do worse and we can do better.

If he signs an extension, I wish him all the best - yet, there should not be any guaranty in his contract that he remain as the head coach through the term of his contract. His history does not compel any such guaranty (in fact, the opposite).

If he does not sign the extension, I am ok with that as well.

  17. OK -- I'm a total soccer novice but I find myself in Spain and about to go to an FC Barcelona game tomorrow with 99,000+ other dudes. (I read that for the World Cup there (which I think was in the 80s) they jammed 121,000 into the same stadium.)

I'm kinda psyched because it seems like a similar experience to going to the Forum for a Habs game or to Kansas or Duke for an NCAA basketball game.

Anyway, just wondering whether anyone has been to a game at Camp Nou and if so whether you have any suggestions/advice.

    Thanks.

I have not, but I have friends who have and said it was great. They also told me that, in addition to the talent on the pitch, there is a lot of "talent" in Barcelona in general. I am sure you are going to have a great time.

FYI - One of my favorite players is Cesc Fabregas who used to play for my team (Arsenal), but left a couple of years back to play for his hometown team Barcelona.
