""He's very serious," the rookie defenseman (Dahlin) said. "He's passionate about the game and a great leader. Great guy and sick on the ice, of course. … He's a leader. I think he was born a leader. He's the guy who needs the 'C.'"

“Looking at how much of a leader Michael Jordan was, I couldn’t help but think about Jack and his competitive drive and trying to make his teammates better this year and how big of strides we took,” Jake McCabe said. “All he cared about this year was just trying to be the best captain of his he could be day in and day out, just trying to lead this group. He did that extraordinarily.”

Yes I know there have been quotes out there.  I was specifically pointing out that none of those are after JS Dea's comments.

Why is anyone surprised??… Where was Captain Jack’s public support for his teammates during their 18 game losing streak??… Not a word from him…

I'm not. Jack is a unique talent but the best player on the team isn't always the best captain. That's fine.  But beyond leadership,   he doesn't sound like a good teammate and that might be hurting his trade value - that and trashing the team publicly.

If Jack was so bad you would hear it from numerous x players ..

And do you want to know why I think this is ***** because usually when one person speaks up all of them speak up where's the rest of them?

Yea where is the team sticking up for their captain?  They aren't and no one else is saying hey JS Dea is totally wrong, Jack is a great leader.

On the team for how many years and no one is willing to say Jack is a great guy and leader???

Instead the rumblings have been - yea Jack is actually how JS said he is

  4. The question is why would anyone leak something to him ?

The big guys get stories because they also leak stuff helpful to their sources.  JW is an opinion guy i haven't really heard him leak stuff that might be considered beneficial to someone?  Mostly he talks about his opinions.

Don't really care what the goal celebration song happens to be as long as Jeremy White isn't celebrating it.

The current 1 is fine.  Blur's track was fine & so was "Lonely Boy."

And, the more often we hear whatever the #### it is, the better.  Haven't heard any of those nearly enough.

It interesting to see how whatever he suggests instantly becomes the flavor of the week or hot move that must be made.

The swords extending beyond the border of the shield are supposed to look like buffalo horns no?

  6. One thing that stands out to me is the number of NHL players and coaches who have gone on the record saying how Freddy is one the best people they have encountered in hockey and in life.  Seems to be a recurring theme around him.

Players have spent their whole lives listening to coaches and are pretty adept at ferreting out who is saying what they think is right and who is saying what they know is right.   Freddy may or may not be a good hockey coach but he sounds like a well respected leader.  A leader Housley was not.

It's almost like it is May 10th and having a coach right now doesn't matter.

    This.

We haven't missed out on anyone. I don't see what the rush is other than it's the off-season and we are bored.   Realistically, what is the drawback for Botts to see who is available after the season is over?

Per Friedman Keefe is of interest to the Sabres because of what he has done in the AHL, despite his lack of NHL Coaching Experience.

It gives the fans something to talk about on Twitter and Message Boards. The issue as you mentioned is a segment of The Sabres Fanbase lives and dies with every tweet or post.

    Thanks.

It just seems like Gronborg was never really reported as being an actual candidate, just something brought up by the fans.

Keefe played in the NHL but wonder if that would be enough for Bott

  9. Or is it too much to ask that the guy who has to make the challenge calls understand the rules?

"I disagree with the call – totally," Housley said. "He knocks the puck out of the air. He never has possession. If you call that possession, then as long as I've been in the league it's a different answer or explanation than they gave.

If it was so clear that it was possessed, why did the review take forever ?  Rules are subject to interpretation but 99/100 times that offsides.

  10. Okposo has/had the "flu" according to media reports. That's much better news, of course, than some carryover of his serious medical problem (concussion syndrome, treatment thereof, etc.) from earlier in the year.

But what he really has/had is gastroenteritis, called stomach flu by some. It's caused by a virus, too, and is contagious and will probably sweep through the lockerrooms of most teams this season. Athletes can get "flu flu" of course, but you don't come back from that in 24-48 hours. Ask Bruce Smith.

    Couple questions:

    1. Why can't they avoid calling it "the flu," something that confuses many people. How many times have we talked about whether players get the flu shot, etc.

    2. Are there any measures teams can take to prevent its spread?

    a few things:

stomach flu isnt contagious the way traditional flu is, and will likely not spread through locker rooms. That's the dreaded flu flu, which spreads via respiratory system primarily.

Stomach almost always comes from ingesting some food/drink item that is already infected, and unless the team is sharing utensils they dont need to worry. Washing hands etc does little to prevent this kind of flu vs flu flu.

There is a 24 hour flu bug and that can hit you hard and although your symptoms will wane after 24 hours, you will be drained for a few days after.

A negative flu test, A or B, does not mean you don't have the flu. It's used primarily as a rapid screening tool only on account of the extremely high false negatives in certain situations.

  11. I have to agree with the general sentiment on here, I don't think you was calling out a specific player or Jack, but as it seemed there were many plays like Jack's that did not lead to a goal but rather a turnover and sustained zone pressure.

The team does not have enough talent to pull off some of the plays they routinely attempt and they get burned.  Lehner is correct that they need to be grinding (bc they aren't talented enough) team that stays within the structure to be successful. It's really the only way.

Does anyone really think that with the right coach this team is substantially better? Is this just a young team going through growing pains?

tbh the best teams in history haven't needed a coach to enforce accountability, that has to come from within the room.

  12. It seems like they were looking for insurance in case they move some D-men at the deadline. Need to expose at least one Dman who is under contract next year w 40 games.  It also protects against wavier claims if we need to send Falk down.

    would think they protect:
    Risto

    McCabe

Fedun?  Not sure who else you would put here. Fedun is a

Or are we putting him out there as a cheap, decent D man for the expansion draft?

Potential theory: teams can either protect 3 D and 7 F's or 8 skaters in total in the expansion draft.

We know Risto and McCabe are 2 protected D. Who's the 3rd? Maybe it's Falk. GMTM isn't going to protect Bogo or Gorges. Kuli is an UFA.

Having a 3rd to protect enables protecting 7 F's instead of only 6 under the 8 skaters in total option.

I think Falk has been more than serviceable and takes over Franson's 3rd pair minutes next year, with hopefully Guhle and a FA (Kuli or another) slotting in above him as well.

We signed him to a year year deal for trade flexibility at the deadline?

Gorges and Franson can now be actively shopped as depth d men to teams because we solidified our depth.

    pending UFA thought.

    Kulikov

    Falk

  13. I HATE the fact that RICE is still used even though myself and numerous other people who have tried something known as HEM(Hydrotherapy, Exercise and Massage) can attest that you heal much faster and actually help strengthen the ligament to help prevent further injury rather than mmaking it more susceptible to injury.

Long story short, I had gout about 5 years ago and was away and didn't have my indomethicin(I get these very rarely), so I tried to deal with it...over the course of the next few days due to how I was walking on my foot I severely sprained my ankle. It blew up to grapefruit size. Went to doctor and he wanted RICE and crutches, no walking on it for a week. Had a buddy who works in PT and he is always on the cutting edge of things. He told me about HEM and recommended I get an ebook on it. He told me he used it with people all the time and it worked exceptionally well.

Get home, got the ebook...Had to get some castor oil for the massage(it penetrates deeply). Did it twice that night, ankle went down by half the next morning. Did it two more times that day, woke up the next morning and it was almost back to normal. Started trying to walk on it, but it still hurt and it started swelling again slightly. Kept doing it twice a day and kept trying to walk on it...by 4th day I was walking normally for the most part, and by the 6th day there was no more swelling when I walked on it. Went back to doctor on day 7 and he did a double take when I walked in and asked how the hell I did that because I should still be on crutches. Told him about my PT buddy and the method he used, seemed really interested and asked me to send him the link to the book.

I did the treatment one more day and then just the exercises for another week and I was good to go.

I shudder at the archaic thinking that RICE is the best method to treat these sprains because I know first hand it isn't. Eichel will be missing at least 2-3 more weeks than he needs to using RICE and it's a shame these trainers are so prone to group think.

RICE and HEM arent mutually exclusive, and castor oil has never been shown to "penetrate deeply"  -- it simply does not absorb through the skin and provide any benefit to an injured joint.

It is highly unlikely you had a severe high ankle sprain and were back to normal within 4-7 days.  It just defies every piece of medical evidence out there.

The normal recovery process for a sprained ankle or knee includes RICE for the first few days to get down the swelling.  The boots are used in conjunction with a wrap and pad to further decrease swelling.

AFTER that HEM is used to begin the rehab process - including ultrasound, pool exercises, bike, and therabands as tolerated.

This is very similar to what you were doing.   HOWEVER, you have to let the joint heal before you begin to do these things because if this is rushed there is a greater risk of reinjury to the joint or other parts of the foot overcompensate creating greater risk of injury.

Again, RICE is a very important part, and HEM isn't really a thing by itself and there zero medical research support for it being a therapy alone.

  14. One of the best games I think I've ever watched was a 0-0 tie between the Sabres and Colorado in 1996.  Hasek and Roy absolutely dominating the game at each end.  Was something to behold.  Heck, a goal might have spoiled it.

it's not the puck crossing the line, per se, that makes hockey exciting.  It's all in the buildup.  That's the problem now, everyone plays a system devoted to defense first, interference and obstruction are allowed way more than is sane, goalies are both more athletic and dressed up as Bibendum, it's an unholy stew of boredom.

I've read a good deal of snark over the years from the hockey media about the changes to the game after the '04 lockout, but had the league held its nerve and kept the clampdown on interference, hooking, holding, et. al. in place, teams would have had to evolve and players would have learned.  The endless trips to the penalty box would have stopped and the game would be more free-flowing and better for it.  Making the nets bigger will inevitably just lead to more goals scored on point shots deflecting off of 17 people.  More goals would result, but would the product be any better, in all honesty?

Yea i think the thing with this is that the goalies in that game had to make some crazy saves to keep it 0-0, not just be butterfly marshmallow shot blockers.

There are a few ways to protect the goalie without taking away too much of the net with fluff. The pads are insane. Was there a flurry of goalie injuries with the old pads? because if there was i certainly missed it.

    IS this really necessary?

  15. i'm hearing you're not the only one who hasn't liked Pysyk's game.

    jw

    I figured as much.

For me, he's not "getting after it" as much and seems to have lost his insight into angles.   He's also playing a few LESS mins per game so I wonder if it's a rhythm thing.

He has a certain skill set (supposedly) that would make another GM think he can still make him a pretty good NHL dman.

  16. not to suggest that there have or haven't been discussions, there is a sense i get that people shouldn't be surprised if Mark Pysyk gets moved at some point before the start of next season.

    jw

Interesting, before this season i would have thought that wasn't in the realm of possibility, but I haven't like his game this year.  But that's to be said of too many Sabres.

  17. How anybody can put stock in a Tweet without taking the time to do a little more research is beyond me. Journalism has become a joke and some of it has to do with the fact that people are easily duped. McKenzie clearly talked about Buffalo being Stamkos' best place to go and he gave his reasoning. No where did he say Stamkos wanted to come to Buffalo.

yup and yup.  It all took off with the cropped clip of Mckenzie tweeted by some crappy fan account.  it edited out the part where the segment was pure speculation.  That turned into Mckenzie said stammer to buffalo holy crap what jersey # will he wear.
