  1. Pomminstein's primary value isn't only in points. Can the 6 above him play any defence or are they all Kovalchuks? (I don't really know)

    Heh, nicely done.

I dont know about defense, but Pommers the last few seasons has been in the mid teens for RWs in terms of scoring. To pay him as a top 6 RW guy thats a lot of defense.

He's good defensively but no one will mistake him for a Selke trophy candidate.

  2. Pommer is overpaid by 1-1.5 mil. Goose is overpaid by 1 mil. Hecht is overpaid by .5 mil. Take that 2.5-3 mil, add it to connolly's 4.5 mil and you have Patrick Marleau. You can live with one bad contract, but multiple bad contracts are the difference between pretenders and contenders.

Bingo. Connollys is a little more difficult bc other than this year the production has been there.

Contracts are set by the market. Pommers was never gonna hit the open market and we overpaid. Granted on any team you will have a few players that are overpaid, any team does, even with a great GM. Missing by a lot, like pommers is what hurts, its not wade redden/dipietro bad but its bad.

Vanek is there too to some degree.

I also think there's another intangible detriment when a guy making that much isn't productive -- the other guys, who all know what everyone makes, see their alleged best players take one invisible shift after another and subconsciously say to themselves "if [highly-paid player X] isn't producing, that means I don't need to either." That's a bit of an oversimplification, but I do think some air is let out of the balloon when the alleged studs are ineffective.

    Yes.

  3. Coming off years where he had 70-80 points, It's prolly right on. And who's to say they weren't competing with other teams at that point. He'll come around, no worries. His salary isn't in the way of anything right now so my panties aren't in a bunch (prolly cause I'm not wearing any).

He had one year of 80 points which put him in 7th spot for his position. He hasnt been in the top 10 for his position since or before. He had a good contract year for sure.

I dont lose sleep over it, but it does handcuff the team when you overpay for a play like him. Pommers wasnt talking to other teams because his current contract was an extension, so it would be against CBA to do so. And he was in line to be a RFA anyway so the Sabres back wasnt against the wall because he wouldnt have hit the open market.

Dont get me wrong hes a good player and puts up points. I just think, and the stats show, that we overpaid for him.

There are plenty of other RWs who make less and do more, now whether we could have acquired them is a different story. Perhaps that was the thinking.

  4. Fair comparisons? NOT.

St Louis getting a new contract next year for 5.625

Alfredsson's contract is a joke. two 7 million years then 4.5 then 1? U can't compare that cap hit to the salary

Perry's contract hit is the same as Pommers so WTF.

Selanne's a 40 year old man just wanting one more year

Hossa contract is another joke. he's got 7.9 million unitl 15-16, now that's real close to 5.3

Pommers contract is a joke too. St Louis has been a premier player for years, in a different class than Pommers and is making less. OK he's getting a new contract that pays him 0.3M more next year. Still doesnt make sense in relation to pommers.

His stats dont support his salary. A lot of NHL contracts are front loaded so its not a joke to compare. Pommers is backloaded, slightly. Vaneks was front loaded.

You think pommers belongs at the #6 spot ? what exactly justifies that? he isnt top 10 for RW in any relevant category. He does a good job of penalty killing but so do a lot of other guys paid far less. He plays the PP but had 8 PP pts last year.

i see your point with the contracts but still look at the guys on that list. How does pommers get paid above some of the other guys i didnt mention?

  5. Pommers led the team in playoff points last year, tied with Ennis. Other guys 'disappeared' a lot more than him.

Nfreeman, you want him to do 25 goals in 82 games right? or score in 30% of the time right? And continue into the playoffs, right?

Last year playoffs he scored 2 goals in six games. I'm sure you can divide 2 by 6.

Other guys did disappear more than him, true. How many of them are considered the core and make over $5M?

For reference Pommers is making more (cap hit) than Martin St. Louis, Alfredson, Corey perry, selanne, Hossa, J. Williams. Bobby Ryan

You think he's making an appropriate amount? i would take any of those guys over pommers at 5.3 any day of the week.

Kane is making only 1 million more than pommers, that's outrageous.

Pommers 62pts last year was good enough to place him 12th in RW scoring. His 24 goals puts him 19th among RWs. He's not even top 10 RW in terms of ice time.

Yet somehow the sabres have made him the 6th highest paid RW this year.

  6. I never started one of these?

The Sabres are close to being dead last in the entire league. They are tied with Oilers who have two games in hand. Only the Devils have less points with equal games played. The Panthers are two points down with 3 games in hand.

The Stars are on a three game skid of their own. Being out scored 11-4 in three games.

It will be interesting to see how Team Fragile reacts to another loss. It will also be interesting if Ruff plans any more surprises for the lineup. Does he go back to Rivet this soon?

i agree. I am generally one to avoid sweeping or over dramatic statements, but based on this teams play of late including the end of last year, they are in big trouble. Its hard to say if its coaching, because if youre outside the locker room you cant know and are only guessing.

I think Ruff is a valuable asset, i think trading someone, is the most realistic option.

  7. And the particular sign I'm thinking of is the one that's about a half-mile from those bridges on the southbound lanes. That usually makes crossing the bridges that much more difficult.

Yea those lovely CP drivers make the morning commute a fun one.

  8. We're still doing these, right?

Complaint #1 - Nobody had started this thread yet.

Complaint #2 - Overhead electronic road signs. We've had them on I-87 in the Albany area for several years, but about 99% of the time, they're blank. The idea (which is a good one, IMO) is to inform motorists of any potential accident or upcoming road work that would affect their commute or travel. Unfortunately, it backfires...every time the sign has an announcement, people slow down to a crawl just before they reach the sign (as if they have to study it), then move on. We could be cruising along at 65mph with no problems, then we hit the brakes and slow to about 20 just before the sign, then speed up and resume our normal speed.

THe twins bridges on the Northway there are god awful, never in my life have i seen a place where people slow down to a crawl to cross a bridge with no toll booths!!!!
