  1. My tile guy took weeks to finish.

You just made me realize why.

 To be fair, mine is only working on a 43 ft2 bathroom, so that really shouldn't take long... just worried he's going to use the cure time between grouting and sealing as an excuse to keep coming back every few days.  I might just offer to do the sealing myself so that's not an issue, but I need him to at least put the toilet back in place since I can't do that on my own, so I have to keep being nice to him at least until that part is done.

  2. Finally having the floor tile replaced in my main bathroom this week.  They made some really good progress yesterday, and it should look pretty close to finished this evening after they do the grout.  Hoping they'll be done today or tomorrow so I won't have to continue politely deflecting the handyman's overtures.   <_<

  3. Sorry to hear of your wife's increased health troubles, NS... prayers sent your way.

My complaint: one of my bf's cats will probably need to be put down within the next few days.  He's always had some issues on and off over the years, but recently had started losing a lot of weight, and after attempts with antibiotics, steroids, and a change in food failed to help, it looks like he's got some kind of GI tumor.  Now comes the awful waiting period where you're forced to try and decide when it's "time" if they no longer have quality of life.  Sucks.

  4. I'm way too old to be pulling all-nighters.

Also, howinthehell am I just now noticing this is the Compliant Thursdays thread??  Is someone messing with us, or has this literally gone unnoticed by everyone the whole time?

  5. Preparing dinner this evening I managed to plunge my chef knife about 1/4" deep into my wrist.  Yep.  Damned near slit my wrist.

You know it's gonna be a good one when you look at it, and you can see the slit you've just made, and it hasn't started bleeding yet, but you know it's coming by the amount of flesh that just got parted.

    Showering is gonna suck tomorrow.

    OW

  6. That wasn't the plan obviously. It's just that tiling is so invasive that after doing a section I took a break, and the breaks stretched out over long periods. It's not like the job was literally in work all that time. But I do consider it a single job since the finished product was continuous tile.

Yeah, that's kind of how the baseboard and door trim replacement project has been for me. Did a bunch before moving in, then took a break. Made another push several months ago, and took another break. I'm really not that far from being done, but I lost motivation and there are more fun things to do on the weekend!

  7. My wife would concur.  It took me 8 years to lay tile in my old house:  back hallway, hall bath, breakfast nook, kitchen and laundry room.

Another factor is likelihood of success:  The tile job was largely successful, but there were two or three tiles that were loose when all was said and done.  I replaced one of them and it loosened up again pretty quickly.  I have no idea what I did wrong (but just on those few tiles).  Now if you're putting down laminate flooring, that's pretty quick and easy and forgiving.  Once you get a couple rows down it goes very quickly.

Holy moly -- 8 years?  I really want to do the laminate flooring myself, but I don't know if it's even feasible with furniture already in the place to try and remove carpet and lay the laminate in half of a room, move the furniture back there, then do the other half.  :/

  8. Whenever possible, I watch with subtitles.  It just helps.  Also I date someone for whom English is a third language, so that helps too.

So anyway, why I'm here:  Just finished season two of The Crown and I need good recommendations for a series or two.

Not really into sci-fi or fantasy.  (I have tried and tried to get into Stranger Things and just cannot.)

The Handmaid's Tale.  Only 10 episodes in the first season, and the second season begins this week.

  9. I am both excited and scared about doing upgrades, I'm looking into stuff I shouldn't be looking into, but because I'm me will try to do myself, and fail miserably

Ultimately I think we'll end up gutting the kitchen and remodeling it.  It's okay for now, but it's dated.  The floor is old and not particularly high quality (although it's wearing well), and the cabinetry has been refaced and the material they used for the refacing has discolored a bit and doesn't match the doors exactly.  At this point it's not something that *has* to be done, but something we'll want to do.  I also think I'll end up putting new flooring in the man cave... similar story- the carpets wearing okay, but it's not what I would have picked.

Part of that is knowing what you're capable of doing.  If it's something that's over your head, it's best to call in a tradesman.  Having watched some of the work done on my house, I can see why the tradesmen are worth the money.  That said, there's other things I'll end up doing myself.... like painting and stuff.

This, and also sometimes knowing how long something will take.  If it's a project you *could* do yourself but it'd take 3 months inbetween work and travel or a professional could do it in 2 days, sometimes it's just worth paying the money.  That's where I am for re-doing the tile floor in my bathroom; it's a small project and I probably could do it, but I've decided I'd rather pay someone to do it so my bathroom is out of commission for the shortest possible time (and I don't have to mess with learning how to use a tile saw).  But to each their own!  YouTube has a wealth of information on household repairs and the like.

  10. Two thumbs up, my man. I feel like a bit of a poser still coming here and just posting in the OT threads since I hardly watch the team anymore, but I keep coming back for the people. You're like the wonderful, dysfunctional family I've (mostly) never met.

  11. We stupidly got our hopes up that there was some light at the end of the tunnel. After three days in the ER trying to get inpatient treatment for my daughter, we find out that she is too broken. No place will take her. Turns out, our rope just ends.

    :(

In Italy I had a day with a lot of walking in Pompeii, woke up the next day with a ton of knee pain, couldn't walk well, but whatever.... Well it's been progressing to the point of instability.... I got an under the radar MRI at work, and boom F'ing medial meniscus tear, like a bad one..... I'm quite frustrated and now debating about surgery

How the heck did you tear your meniscus just walking around?  That sucks, man.

I have for other reasons but that's another topic. And I'm pretty sure that if they knew we were coming, they would mobilize a couple of army divisions at every Niagara River crossing to make sure we didn't get in anyway.

    Thanks, and thanks to all.

Not sure there is anything more that can be done at this point. Her behaviors have really escalated in the past 3-4 weeks. Extremely self injurious, smashed her head into the TV on Tuesday (she wears a helmet, she was fine, the TV not so much), Wednesday was a snow day and when it was over my wife and I independently came to the conclusion that it was the worst day of our lives (maybe top 3 but you'd really have to sell me on the other 2). I had to physically restrain her for 45 mins of a 2 hour meltdown.

Saturday was looking like it was going to be a repeat of weds so my wife said screw it, and took her to the ER (then it's on them to find some inpatient care). Pro Tip - If you are going to have a psychiatric emergency, have it during the week because there is nobody there to do placements on the weekend.

So three days later, we left, with a whole list of places that said even if they had a bed, they wouldn't take her, the reasons being that not only are her behaviors not under control, but she also isn't potty trained and she has seizures. Um, no ######, jackass! Those are the very reasons we're here.

"Paging Dr. Yossarian! Dr Yossarian to the ER!"

We had a meeting with our school district yesterday that had even more people involved, and now that we've exhausted all the front door channels, they are going to start using their personal connections to try and get us more services or placement. Either way, she's here for a while. Hope we have it in us.

    Thanks for letting me rant.

I don't even know what to say other than

One of my dogs, who had a catastrophic spinal injury four years ago, and is alive now only because I’m lucky enough to live half an hour away from one of the four places in the US that will even do the required surgery (and doubly lucky that I could afford it), is suddenly having problems with his back legs again... I’m gonna hope for the best but am deathly afraid I’ll be having him put down on Monday...

    ######.

Heavy in here today... here's hoping it's just a passing thing with his legs...

  12. I'm gonna make it out to Colorado to ski one day. Gotta see what all you pampered powder babies have been raving about for the last century.

I'll admit that I hated it at first because I kept getting sinking and getting stuck, which sucks. But now that I've figured it out, it's pretty awesome.

  13. Last Friday I was able to take a 3 day weekend for a snowboarding trip with a friend down to Taos, NM.  We'd originally planned on riding there Sat./Sun., but after looking at how bad the snowpack was in that area, I started looking at other resorts we could hit along the way.  We ended up going to Wolf Creek (southern CO) on Friday afternoon, and as luck would have it, they'd gotten 10" of snow the night before.  Easily the best day I've ever had on a snowboard, and I finally "get it" about why people are obsessed with chasing powder.  That day will sustain me through the middle of summer when I'm dreaming of snow.
