  1. What exactly do you mean?

Instead of calling it and redoing it or instead of calling 11 out as the third number?

If you mean redoing it -- well there weren't any actual mistakes made. That's part of the machine's function.

If you mean instead of calling 11 as the third number -- for obvious reasons. They pick balls at ten second intervals.

I'm just asking why 11 wasn't taken out of the machine and called as the second number. Did it go back into the hopper automatically when the first ball was taken out?

  2. Just out of curiosity, has TB made any public comments about the lottery? (IIRC he was the Sabres' rep in the room.) Would be interested to see if he had any comment about the 11 being a bit premature.

When the 1st number (5) came up, it was followed in short order by 11.

OK, but it wasn't removed and called. It was dumped back in? Who decided to do that instead of calling it?

  3. 5, 14, 6, 1 ... I think.

What I want to know ...  is how the league assigned the numbers to the teams?

So what happened to 11? I can't find a video of the drawing that I am able to play.

No Schlitz. The league can't even run a lottery without issues.

It probably happened last year too. That's why the video had to be heavily edited.

  4. The Mausoleum coming back to life. Wow. Loud. The "yes yes yes" chant is a great story, purely fan-driven. Refreshing. They're also chanting "Can you hear us" to Ovi, who said yesterday the Coliseum wouldn't be as loud as the Cap Center (lol).

Think Sabres fans in the FNC will ever get their act together like that?

  5. I want to hear from @fakegorbyportwinestain and some of the others who supported him in this thread about Murray's comments from yesterday.

It was a pretty non-commital statement with lots of ifs ands and buts and "best efforts" and question marks. Is it supposed to negate his previous statement that he hopes the team is better while still having a shot in the lottery?

  6. Really?

So, you were laughing at them for being dumb because they'd just done something you thought would be the smart thing to do?

And, before telling us how Risto was your boy all along, you might want to read this. (Pretty sure this was you as well.)

Just my opinion, but digging up old posts is a bit much. Trying a little too hard to make a point or embarrass someone. It's got that political "gotcha" feel to it.

  7. We love you Jack, don't worry.

He has no idea what's in store for him. I don't know what compares in Buffalo sports history. OJ's arrival? Even I'm not old enough to remember that. Perreault? Turgeon? I don't remember any Turgeon Fever per se. Excitement, yes. Modern era, what with social media and all that, this is going to be cray cray. Hell, I was at the first appearance of Grigorenko at the arena, and that was a little wild. Jack is going to hear it and feel it for sure.

  8. Eichel understands.

Sabres' Tim Murray says that he feels like a Canadian world junior team hopeful who gets called at 6 am and told he's cut

Commenter nails it: how does Eichel feel hearing that from his future GM?

Yeah, GMTM hates the media spotlight. Never lacking for a good quote. For the moment, my opinion of the guy is souring.

  9. Does this look like a happy kid?

    http://streamable.com/u0yv

No. I don't know what he's normally like. He's not a handstand, chug a beer kind of guy, I don't think. He's 18 and all the pressure just escaped and his life just changed. I don't know what he would have looked like had the Leafs or Sabres won the lottery. I get it though. He looks less than thrilled.

OK, this is juicy and comes only from my conspiratorial mind. What if McDavid's reaction (including "anything can happen on draft day") is basically, "Oh, crud, now we have to use the Lindros Option that we've talked about, and this is going to suck."?

    Exactly.

My views on the "tank" are well known.

The lotto result is fair and just, IMO.

The third worst team in the league, IMO, the worst team that did not tank, gets the first pick.  That's a good outcome for this dreadful season.

If the NHL had instituted the changes for next draft lotto this year it would be likely that the Sabres and Coyotes would have missed out on the second pick as well. That would have been the icing on the poop cake.

Anyway, this is the last I will say on this whole thing.  I have said my piece.

    Onward.

Finishing second is enough of a PP slap. What I'm coming around to is how perfect this is. Buffalo gets dissed again by the Hockey Gods, we're number two again, in so many things. The buffalo chip on the shoulder remains, and Eichel is going to have a huge hump on his back as well. It's a marriage made in heaven. We'll fight and claw for everything we get, surely with little to no support from the league or respect from the national media along the way. We'll have to be smarter in building our team now. When the Cup is raised, no one can say we did it because we tanked for McDavid.

  10. I watch McDavid play here in Erie all the time. Connor loves Sherry Bassin the owner. The Oilers owner has forced Bassin to declare bankruptcy. Connor's dad offered his lawyer services to Bassin. Oilers have been trying to buy the Erie Otters for about four years now. That's a slap in the face. I would imagine the Connor doesn't want to play for the Oilers.

I wonder if the McDavids will pull a Lindros. Or maybe tell MacTavish he won't sign if they draft him. I think Connor has too much class for that. But who knows? It must be a very uncomfortable position for him to be in. I think he handled it well. Being mentored by a pro like Bobby Orr (his agent) probably helped.

I don't think this is over.

    Great insight. Thanks.

This explains McDavid's morose expressions last night. He's drafted by the NHL team trying to put his current junior team out of business.

Morose? I haven't seen the interview. I will hunt it down. But I've seen and heard him interviewed, and he plays it very tight to the vest. He's probably been coached up by PR people for awhile now. He is very quiet and thoughtful.

  11. He was disappointed last year too, so it's not like this is a McDavid thing. He just thinks the process sucks.

See, I thought his beef with the PROcess is that he had to drive to Toronto on a Saturday night and deal with the media.

Yep, time to start making the playoffs so GMTM doesn't have to take part in the process anymore.

This is where I'm at. STFU and build a playoff team. Seriously, it's time for this organization to shut up and put up.

As far as he's concerned we haven't even picked anyone yet. He just wanted first overall out of principle. It's the idea of having a choice vs being beholden to Edmonton and whoever they pick.

He doesn't like being second place to a team that just keeps falling a** first into number 1 picks. I'd be disappointed too.

No. He said you always want the best player, not the second-best, in any situation. He wasn't speaking theoretically. He wanted McDavid!

"I feel for our fans" was a cruddy thing to say.

  12. Hopefully he thanks BU, but tells them he is adding the FFALO to his 2015 plans,

    Nice.

    Really? :censored:

    Them college people is smart.

Also, I really hope Jack lives in the city, like Millsie and Jaypeezie.

EICH FOR RESIDENT! EICH FOR RESIDENT! EICH FOR RESIDENT! EICH FOR RESIDENT!

    How am I doin', TrueBlue?

  13. I'm usually an "everything is calculated" guy — that is, Murray knew what he was saying and why. I doubt Murray is that calculated. There's just no filter between mouth and brain.

But, if he wanted to be calculating, it could have gone one of two ways. 1. Start beating the drum last night that Eichel will be as good as McDavid and we're just as happy to get him as we would have been with McDavid. Fire up the competition between the two even more. 2. Say what he said. We got the consolation prize. We didn't get the best player. Poke the Bahstan Bay-uh before he even gets he-ah. Get the juices flowing in the kid.

I doubt it was some kind of advanced psychological ploy. Murray just being Timmy Downer.
