Gilbert Perreault piles up seven points as the Sabres beach the Golden Seals, 9-5, in California. The record stands to this day as the most points by a Sabre in a game. Another record from that game that never has been broken is three goals by both teams in 18 seconds, two by California and one by Buffalo's Dan Gare.

    February 1, 1996

Head coach Ted Nolan and general manager John Muckler are in rare agreement as Muckler executes a trade with the Florida Panthers for defenseman Bob Boughner in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick. Nolan, who coached the Boughie Man in juniors, wanted to add toughness and character to his team.

Dominik Hasek returns to the lineup and plays brilliantly in a 2-2 tie with Anaheim at HSBC Arena. "We were looking at each other on the bench wondering what he'd been doing for three months ? secretly playing in the Czech League or something?" Michael Peca said. The Dominator had been out since a late-October game against Florida at home in which he tore a muscle in his groin. For the record, the Sabres went 17-19-4 without Hasek. That included a woeful record with backup goalie Dwayne Roloson in net; Marty Biron played admirably.

Rick Martin beats Bernie Parent to become the first Sabre ever to score on a penalty shot. But the Flyers beat the Sabres, 4-3, at the Spectrum. The Sabres had still not won a game in Philly in their history, and their luck would not get better the following season, when they lost three games in the Stanley Cup finals in the City of not so Brotherly Love. In fact, it took the Sabre franchise seven years to get its first win at the Spectrum.

Goalie Tom Draper suffers a meltdown in his final appearance as a Sabre, allowing two goals late in regulation time and one in overtime in a 5-4 loss to the Oilers at the Aud. The performance against his former team has coach John Muckler lobbying general manager Gerry Meehan to finally find him a goaltender, even though the future Dominator is on the roster. Mucks has a minder in mind -- Grant Fuhr is playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs and owns five Stanley Cup rings with the aforementioned Oil.

    January 31, 2004

The Sabres beat the Rangers 3-1 for the second straight day, this time at HSBC Arena, for their fourth consecutive win.

In a game against the California Golden Seals in California, Gilbert Perreault records the very first hat trick by a Sabre. Buffalo wins, 4-2. Two days later in Vancouver, the Sabres win 6-1 to finish their three-game western swing undefeated. In the first western trip in franchise history, back in late October and early November, the Sabres went 0-3 and were outscored 17-5. The franchise was finding its bearings. From January 14 until February 4, the Sabres were 6-1-3. After 10 losses in their next 13 games, the Sabres finished the season 8-3-4, 15 games under .500, in fifth place in the East Division and, of course, out of the playoffs. But all in all it was a very respectable first season in the National Hockey League.

    January 29, 1977

In the midst of the Blizzard of ?77, only 14 Sabres have made a flight to Montreal for a game with the Canadiens. The Sabres still find a way to tie the powerhouse Habs, 3-3, at the Forum. And Voice of the Sabres Ted Darling, snowbound back in Buffalo, still finds a way to broadcast the game: while watching it on TV, he does play by play over the phone from his living room.

    January 29, 1997

Dominik Hasek makes perhaps the iconic save of his Sabre career, sprawling across the crease and stabbing Mario Lemieux's sure goal in his glove. Referee Rob Shick adds the unforgettable postscript, peeling apart The Dominator's glove to convince his eyes that what they just saw is true: the puck is really in there. The Sabres win, 3-1, at Marine Midland Arena, to close to within two points of the Penguins for first place in the Northeast Division, a division the Sabres would go on to win going away. The win starts a 12-game unbeaten streak for the Sabres.

    January 29, 2000

The Sabres lose 1-0 at Boston, the second time in as many days they are involved in a 1-0 game. It's the first time in 10 years that the team has been involved in consecutive 1-0 games.

  4. January 28, 1977

Snow begins falling in the early morning hours, and the temperature plummets from the mid 20s to below zero. By afternoon, the wind is gusting at an average of 46 miles an hour. The Blizzard of '77 is on. Will the Sabres make it to Montreal for a game the next day?

    January 28, 2000

Martin Biron makes 21 saves to record his fifth shutout of the season and second against Ottawa in a 1-0 win at home over the Senators. James Patrick scores the game's only goal. Dominik Hasek is still out with a groin injury.

  5. January 27, 1975

The Sabres trade left winger Norm Gratton and a third-round draft pick in 1976 to the Minnesota North Stars for center and two-time Cup winner Fred Stanfield.

    January 27, 1989

At the Aud, starting goalie Daren Puppa breaks his arm in a collision with Montreal's Mike McPhee. The Sabres win the game 4-2 but lose Puppa for the rest of the season. The loss will soon force GM Gerry Meehan to make a trade for another goaltender, Clint Malarchuk, leading to a much more frightening injury at the Aud two months later.

    January 27, 1991

No one is overly concerned when the Sabres lose to the Calgary Flames, 5-4, at Memorial Auditorium. After all, the fans have been spoiled by an eight-game unbeaten streak at home. Little did they know, the Sabres wouldn't win again at the Aud until March 17, a winless streak of 12 games (0-7-5).

    January 27, 2002

Stu Barnes scores in overtime to give the Sabres a 3-2 win in Washington. Stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

  6. I would have expected you to ask what "tit" is. :)

Only two wins in Toronto since the Sabres eliminated the Leafs in the conference finals in 99. I never have a good feeling in the belly of the beast.

What's up with all the old American sitcom theme songs in that building? So far I've heard "The Jeffersons" and "Welcome Back Kotter." Are these popular shows now in Canada or something?

  7. January 26, 1993

Bob Sweeney scores 2:23 into overtime to give the Sabres a 4-3 overtime win over the Flyers in the Spectrum. It's the second overtime goal of the season for the big center who was acquired just before the regular season on waivers from Boston. Sweeney was a nice surprise for the Sabres in 92-93, scoring 21 goals and adding 27 assists. He scored four shorthanded goals, three power play goals and three game-winning goals. It would not be the last overtime goal of the year for Sweeney. Do you remember?

  8. January 25, 1975

The Sabres win their fifth straight game without a hobbled Gilbert Perreault, beating the Canadiens in the Montreal Forum, 7-6.

    January 25, 1977

In the NHL All Star Game in Vancouver, Rick Martin scores two goals, including the game-winner, and is named most valuable player.

    January 25, 1995

In their home-opener, the Sabres defeat the Devils 2-1 at the Aud for their third straight win. A lockout by the owners delayed the start of the season.

    January 25, 2003

In Ottawa, Daniel Alfredsson scores 46 seconds into the second period to snap Martin Biron's shutout streak at 221:58. Alfredsson scores again in overtime to beat the Sabres, 4-3, and end their seven-game unbeaten streak. Also on this day, the NHL gives Mark Hamister his fourth and final extension to complete a purchase of the Sabres. Let the record show that the Senators, like the Sabres, are also bankrupt.

  9. Shrader, I don't think there are any 4-5 year windows in the NHL any more. It would be an interesting point to discuss though.

nfreeman, good points, but sometimes you have to spend money to make money. It's still premature to have this debate -- we will know by next opening night what direction Golisano is taking this team in.

  10. Let's hope the Sabres don't read their press clippings. It seems like every road game for a month, the local papers do the "Sabres franchise comeback" story. Today, the New York Times has a piece on the Sabres' "renewal." The problem is, these stories of late are talking about a team the fans haven't seen in a month. Time to turn things around. Everything points to a better performance for the Sabres, but a win is going to be tough to get.

  11. January 24, 1978

Buffalo and Memorial Auditorium are hosts to the NHL All-Star Game, and hometown heros Rick Martin and Gil Perreault make the locals proud. Martin scores late in regulation to tie the game, and Perreault wins it in overtime.

    January 24, 1981

The Sabres win at Washington, 7-4, but lose Gilbert Perreault to injury. Bert breaks three ribs in a collision with the goal post and will go on to miss 22 games.

    January 24, 1987

Also in Washington, defenseman Bill Hajt plays his last game as a Buffalo Sabre after 14 seasons and 854 games. The prototypical stay-at-home defenseman and perhaps the biggest unsung hero in Sabres' history will be a healthy scratch the rest of the way and retire after the season.

    January 24, 2003

The franchise is bankrupt, attendance is down, the playoffs are a long shot and the future of the team in Buffalo is very much in doubt. But on this night in downtown Buffalo, all is right with the hockey world. The second sellout crowd of the season at HSBC Arena watches as Martin Biron makes 27 saves to blank the Maple Leafs, 4-0. Biron becomes the first Sabre goaltender to record three straight shutouts, in the process extending his shutout streak to 201:12 to smash Dominik Hasek's mark. The Sabres shut out their opponent for the fourth time in five games, also a franchise first, and extend their unbeaten streak to seven games. It's the long-awaited return of Maxim Afinogenov from a concussion, but Miro Satan steals the spotlight with two goals and two assists. Ed Belfour is pulled. The Sabres bitch-slap the Leafs all over the ice. Rob Ray and Tie Domi go at it center ring. It's hockey nirvana in a season from hell.

  12. January 23, 1984

The Sabres win their 10th straight game on the road ? and overall ? 5-3 over the Bruins at Boston Garden. Buffalo had set a new NHL record for most consecutive wins away from home by beating the Blues in St. Louis two nights earlier for their ninth in a row. The Sabres held the record all by themselves for over 16 years until the Blues won 10 in a row on the road late in the 1999-2000 season. The New Jersey Devils later turned the trick as well. The 10-game overall winning streak still stands as the longest in Sabres' history.

    January 23, 1992

Rookie Donald Audette scores with 45 seconds left in overtime as the Sabres defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Igloo in Pittsburgh, 5-4. The French Gorilla's goal, his second in overtime during the 1991-92 season, caps a stirring comeback by the Sabres, who trailed at one point 4-1. Audette scored 31 goals his rookie season.

The initial steel is put into the ground for the Crossroads Arena project.

  13. I went to nhl.com looking for a definitive explanation of the video replay system. Imagine this -- I found very little, just a sketchy section in the rule book. So many questions, but maybe the biggest one is, what standard is used to review goals? Like the NFL, does there have to be incontrovertible visual evidence to overturn the call on the ice, or does the video official make the call as if he is watching the play live and he is the ref? It seems to be the latter. Remember the goal in Pittsburgh, the spectacular glove save by Biron, where the ref said no goal, and despite no clear visual evidence to the contrary, the replay official awarded a goal.

  14. WAIT! This isn't THAT Doug Young -- the "my guy" dweeb from WGR a few years ago -- is it?! :)

I guess I would feel a little better if it's true that the "goal" was reviewed and the goal judge thought he saw the stick hit the puck before it crossed the line. Still gross incompetence, but at least everything about the system worked -- except getting the call right. It's not like it wasn't reviewed, or the monitors broke down, or the phone didn't work, etc.

Why not set up the monitors in a little booth off the ice and let the refs decide, a la the NFL? Reviews would be initiated by the ref or the coach, who would get so many challenges. In the spirit of hockey's rich heritage, coaches would not throw red flags, but red water bottles. :)

  15. January 22, 1982

The Sabres win the front end of a home-and-home series with the Quebec Nordiques, 5-3, at the Aud. The win extends the Sabres' unbeaten streak to nine (8-0-1). They make it 10 the next day in Quebec with a 3-2 win before, of course, reeling off six straight losses!

    January 22, 1997

In the second game of a seven-game homestand at Marine Midland Arena, the Sabres harass the Habs, 6-1, to win their fourth straight game. Jason Dawe scores two goals and Randy Burridge adds two assists as the Sabres win for the seventh time in eight games in their new home.

  16. it looked like he was trying to kick the puck up to this stick - not towards the net - evidenced by regehrs swinging his stick just as it crossed the line so since he did not intential direct it towards the net. i think that is why it was not reversed.

Intent doesn't enter into it. He kicked the puck into the net!

I still can't get over the apparent fact, reported by Dave, that the video goal judge is a minor official provided by the home team. Can anyone say "garage league"?

Can an NHL ref call for a review? I know the refs in the NFL can't.

Oh well, as others have said, it wasn't why the Sabres lost anyway. It wasn't "No Goal," it was "no goals"!
