  1. This whole Harborcenter facility should greatly improve the gameday experience for Sabres fans and out-of-towners alike. I mean currently the 'go to' pregame location is Pearl Street which is a pretty lengthy walk from the arena especially on the cold January nights. With the new bar/restaurant across the street and the continued development of the cobblestone streets, there are quickly multiple new options emerging for the game day experience.

    Me likey. :)

  2. I know I'm late to the party on these things, but I started watching House of Cards last night. I'm pretty sure I'm going to OD on it over the weekend. The problem with ODing is then you have to wait for the next season to start and then watch one episode at a time. There's something about ODing. There's also something about watching old school, appointment television, too.

FYI House of Cards is a Netflix series and the second season will be released all at once for your binge viewing habits. All episodes come out on February 14, 2014. Also it is an awesome show, and I too am eagerly awaiting the next season.

  3. Dude the bills just got Ramses Barden and Nathan Williams SUPER BOWL

I went and checked TBD expecting a good 10 page thread on these scrubs - sadly only a 3 pager... the bills posters are slacking over there. Every pickup is always going to be an impact player on TBD.

  4. Miller for Allen would make some sense if miller committed to signing with the Blues.

I think what Liger was saying is the St. Louis has pegged Jake Allen as their goalie of the future, and that a trade for Miller would consist of one of Halak/Elliot coming back along with a prospect pick. That gives STL a top goalie while they wait for Allen to develop into a studmuffin.

With the speculation about O'Reilly, do you guys think of an Ehrhoff/Grigorenko offer makes any sense?

Ehrhoff certainly meets the Avs needs.

That sounds like a great deal to me, and may even be reasonable for what Colorado would be expecting. With 2nd round picks to even it out either way.
  5. I just think the Miller market is probably even weaker than the Enroth market. Not because of talent but because Miller is just going to cost a lot more even as a rental. And again, barring injury, I don't see a playoff team wanting to switch their goaltending up. It creates instability.

You are probably right about the goalie trade market at the deadline this year. But making trades for the sake of trading doesn't really accomplish anything for our future/rebuild...
  6. I don't see Miller being traded to the Islanders and I don't see the Islanders giving up any more scoring. So I'm just throwing something minor out there instead.

Understood, but to me Enroth as a potential goalie purgatory starter/timeshare next year has more value than a 26 year old player who has never scored more than 40 points in a season plus a third rounder. Edit: but I certainly appreciate you actually naming a player and team to trade with instead of just "let's trade Miller"...

  7. As mentioned earlier, yes trades that involve retained salary count towards your salary cap, and therefore salary floor. Once the contract of the player who was traded is over, we no longer retain any salary.

As for retained salary helping us once we are competitive again, the answer would be no. Once we are a competitive team, we will want all the cap space we can handle so we can sign free agents or pick up rental players at the deadline. Also we will have some RFA's who hopefully earned some big raises that we will have to re-sign

The retention of salary on all three (Vanek, Pommers and potentially Miller) would all end after this season based on comments upthread. given that Pegula has stated that cash shouldn't be an issue, it would make sense to me to maximize the salary retention on a potential Miller trade (either the 15% to cap or the 50% of total contract amount, IIRC) in order to maximize the return. Our cap number this year isn't an issue and all of the salary retention will end this offseason with all three contracts coming off the books.
  8. Small complaint today - I left both my wallet and watch at home this morning in my rush not be late. It's very disorienting not having means to pay for things/ID/etc. The way this morning went i'm surprised I remembered to put on pants...

  9. "A club cannot absorb more than 50 percent of the players’ annual cap hit/salary in any trade. Any NHL club can only have up to three contracts on their payroll in which the contract was traded away under the retaining salary proviso.

Also, only up to 15 percent of your upper limit cap amount can be used up by the money you have retained in trades." - Pierre LeBrun as quoted in this article.

I'm not doing the math on the cap percentages, but they can retain salary in one more trade this season so long as they don't eclipse "15% of [the] upper limit cap amount." Just posting for clarification since nobody seemed quite sure.

Any idea if the retained salary from these trades (Vanek and Pommers) would count towards the salary floor? If they are going to be fielding a relatively young roster next year for the McDavid tank, it may be beneficial to retain salary from these trades to maintain roster and cap flexibility going into our "competitive" years in 15'/16'.

  10. That's a tough one. I have always really liked Eberle, but I think I'd prefer Hall. That said, I think Eberle and RNH are both more available than Hall. But I really don't want to trade one of our good defensemen.

I would choose Hall as well. You know how the saying goes - you have to give up something good to get something good. Our team need at forward and our depth at defense means that even trading an 'equal' prospect would benefit our team as a whole. Top D prospect traded away for Top Forward prospect makes us a better team.

  11. As far as Toffoli for a rental forward in Matt Moulson: LA fans would riot. He's still a very highly regarded prospect who hasn't broken through just yet. We'd be more likely to target the next crop of forwards they have behind Pearson and Toffoli. If we could get Linden Vey that would be awesome.

Isn't that exactly the type of player that TM should be targeting? The ones that are on the precipice of NHL top-6 level but have yet to show it. That's what we brought TM and his player evaluation skills in to do.
  12. Enroth, Islanders' 1st, and Zadorov/Ristolainen/Pysyk/McCabe/Ehrhoff for one of their top 3 forwards.

Despite the haul that your proposed trade is, I still doubt they trade one of Hall/RNH/Eberle. Although if they did, which of the three would you prefer?

Miller is a slight upgrade from Scrivens, same contract situation, so does this mean the market is now set for miller?

I disagree. Miller is much more than a slight upgrade from Scrivens. In terms of goaltending talent it isn't close IMO, however, the difference in trade returns will not reflect this discrepancy.

  13. I would target their 1st round pick in either 2014 or 2015

but Liger, unless the 1st round pick is top 5 it will take 2-3 years at least for the player to make the NHL, let alone make an impact. That and if you are trading them Miller, the Oilers will (assumedly) be a much better team by 2015, taking us from early first round to mid to late. There comes a point in a rebuild where you stop collecting picks and start seeking young prospects/NHL players so that you peak in the same window.

not even mentioning that EDM is supposedly on Miller's no-trade-to-canada list

  14. My question would be... If the Oilers offered you their Conditional 1st rounder in 2015 for Enroth, the condition being he signs an extension next season, would you do it? You either get a 2015 1st rounder or you get a 2015 2nd rounder if he doesn't resign. What is your play?

    Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger

Sounds like Craig MacTavish is hard at work today. Dubnyk trade to Preds and perhaps, more action on the goalie front. Stay tuned.

I don't think trading Enroth is worth it given the returns noted above for Dubnyk/Scrivens. We wouldn't be expecting anything more than a 2nd rounder. Why not keep him as a 'Goalie Purgatory' stop-gap until we are finally good. Trading Enroth assumes keeping Miller which throws a wrench into the tank in 2015 strategy. To me it's trade Miller or keep all goalies...

  15. David Pagnotta@TheFourthPeriod

The Oilers have been working the lines pretty heavily lately, I suspect we'll see at least one more move fairly shortly.

Seems that Edmonton is trying to make additional moves as their last trade doesn't really address their primary need of legit goaltending. However if I had to think in terms of Buffalo, I would think Jhonas Enroth with another year on his deal would be more of a target for them than Ryan Miller. Speculation on my part of course.

So if we are offering goaltending and defense, it would take quite a bit to land one of their top 3 forwards (probably even untouchable). So who else would we target? Yakupov and his league worst +/-? Some other lesser prospect?
