    CBJ going all in. I respect the move for a small market team to take their shot like this. I don't think it works at all though

    I mean if there was a year to go all in to try to make a deep run in the playoffs it is this one as there is no real dominant team in the NHL...

  3. I got news yesterday evening that my uncle-in-law committed suicide.

    This comes after his wife cleaned out the bank accounts and took the kids a few days earlier while he was at work. The family is not taking it well, as a lot of dirt around the apparently persistent unhappiness & marital problems are all coming out in the post-mortem. It's especially tough since he lived in Myrtle Beach and the rest of the family in is WNY. Just another reminder that mental health should not be taken lightly, and just because people "look" okay doesn't mean they aren't troubled inside.

    ***** man.

    I like JBOT and think he doing a good job.  I understand that fans patience is wearing very thin, at least, and we are ready to riot, at worst.

    Not picking on you @Samson's Flow, as you know I am a big fan of all the flows ... ? ... as I have seen it mentioned by others ... to give any credit to JBOT for landing Dahlin is, at best, a stretch.  If anything I could understand more if we as fans would want to be critical of the way he ran the team last year, which lead Dahlin to us having 'luck' in the lotto.

    No doubt, but having the #1 pick and being able to draft Dahlin did mean that he didn't need to make another FA move for the defense since we could pencil in Dahlin as a top 6 player right away. It's more guarding against potential criticism of not doing enough to add to the defense, when going into the season he had 8 NHL level players for 6 defense spots (Risto, Bogo, Dahlin, Pilut, McCabe, Scandy, Beaulieu, Nelson... plus Hunwick).

    The bolded is a huge reason why we are in this mess IMO. No difference makers in the lot, and only two solid pieces (Risto & McCabe) in 4 years.

    Those should be our 23-26 yr old players in prime roles.

    Agree.   The few times he sat players (Tage comes to mind) they responded.  All teams carry extra forwards and defense.  Any player that does not put the best effort AND learn from mistakes should sit.

    Players that don't like this - Berglund - can leave.

    Players that want to play - Beaulieu - should not be punished, although maybe he should have kept that out of the press.

    That's easier to do with complementary players, it's much harder to do when it's Jack Eichel.

    Your last two sentences are in complete contradiction of one another.

    Re-reading I phrased that poorly. The intent was that the expansion Vegas didn't have the existing "this is my team" guys, so they had the opportunity to integrate many team's "best practices" in establishing a new team culture.

    Any new veteran voices added to the Sabres have to overcome the existing culture from the franchise guys like Jack & Risto who have been here a while.

    Tough challenge indeed for this current squad.  I always felt there needs to be a 'critical mass' of new vs. old thinking in order to change the old thinking.  It's not done with just one player or even a new captain.  Also, it is a rather awkward situation in that our anointed captain is maybe not the ideal person to lead the 'unlearning' process.

    Change can maybe start with one person, but it will quickly die unless others visibly buy-in and infect the others with the same attitude.

    I don't want to say ROR, but I have a feeling that is what the locker room "issues" boiled down to.

    So the idea here is that the fans have a solid read and who he is as a player and the hope is that we can trick one of those big dummy general managers, that worked their way up to the top of their profession, in hopes that their scouting department and entire roster-building structure has no idea what they’re getting?

    Sounds like a solid plan.

    Come on SDS, it's called the "Chiarelli Plan".

    Re: Botterill, what is this based on other than he played a key role in Pittsburgh?

    Admittedly, i'm less certain on Botterill than I am Beane, but I think there is something to be said about having a communicated strategy and sticking to it, and not reacting immediately to the ups & downs of a season or the demands of the fanbase.

    I'm keeping perspective that the team he acquired was the literal worst team in the league for the last few years, and he has brought the talent level up to one that is in the middle 3rd of the league in terms of points. Similar to my thoughts around the Bills, there are only so many holes that can be filled in one offseason, and Botterill (IMO) correctly identified the major priorities as

    a) #1 winger for Jack = Skinner;

    b) defensive depth improvement = Pilut, Dahlin and other lesser depth pieces;

    c) goaltending = Hutton on a cheap contract + Ullmark up full time -> remember we were all ready to dump Lehner after last year.

    In addition, the emphasis on building a winner in Rochester and allowing the prospects to over-develop in the AHL is a sound strategy, even if it means short term frustrations at the NHL level. Yes the rest of the forwards didn't step up this year like it was possible they would, and it does seem the cancer on this team is deeper than originally thought, but I am comfortable giving JBotts some time to wait for the right value move v. reactionary move. I know that doesn't jive with the pitchfork mob that is out right now, but IMO that is what separates the fan's role from the GM role.

    I think the jury's still out on both. Botterill blew his biggest trade and cost the team significant improvement with the O'Reilly deal.  That's a huge negative.  We'll see how things play out with Skinner contract and the trade deadline.

    Beane has made some good picks, but there are still massive holes in the roster approaching three years into his tenure.  It took him way too long to figure out the QB position and too long to add speed at WR.  The upcoming FA period and draft is huge, but If during the  season Allen is still running around for his life, things will go south quickly for Beane.

    Beane has had 2 drafts so far. After years of trepidation to even take a swing at a QB, Beane came in with a distinct focus on aiming for a franchise QB. NFL team success is strongly slanted towards having a top QB, so taking a swing and (seemingly) finding a good one gives him a lot of leash in my mind. The holes you speak of at WR and O-line were necessarily created in order to take a shot at a Franchise QB. I have faith he will correct those this offseason through the draft and FA - the resources available in one NFL offseason only allows you to fill so many holes, and I feel he prioritized appropriately.

  11. The obvious counterpoint to this is Edmonton deciding that they needed to trade Taylor Hall, as he was still young and had value, but the team dynamic wasn't working. These 'hockey trades' only work when you can get back an equally good player back at a position of greater need, which is very rare that another team's needs & available players will line up perfectly value wise.

    There is a strong likelihood that trading Risto will make this team worse and not better. I know we're all frustrated, but making trades in reaction to poor play is a path to reducing the overall talent level on your team.

    My wife and I got a puppy together when we first married.  That puppy turned into the perfect dog - I could walk her among people without a leash with 100% trust that she would listen.  We lived near a park and she would run and play as hard as any dog but you could stop her on a dime with a command.  Awesome dog.  Got her from an amateur breeder.

    <snip>

    They need someone to identify behaviors and thoughts that lead to these collapses, lead to dropping success once they pick it up.  Can that be a coach, too?  Maybe, but what coach can really teach hockey, personal development, and actually run a successful system, manage players in-game, and have the wisdom to make calls on the fly when necessary?  And accomplish all of this while still motivating the team and not offending them or turning them off?  That there would be one accomplished person.

    As someone who was lucky enough to get one of those "perfect dogs" as well - walking without a leash, hanging out in the front yard without fear of running away/into street, I can say that the same 'learned behaviors' happened when she spent time with my dads less behaved dogs. She learned to bark at everything by adopting their behavior, and now it is incredibly tough to get her to unlearn those bad behaviors.

    I wouldn't be surprised if the Sabres have learned the wrong way to be a pro, and the young players don't know any better. It's going to be tough to unlearn any bad habits they have picked up. Vegas' instant success has a lot to do with starting from scratch and instilling good habits right away.

    I can't say for sure whether Vegas is the most overrated city in the country, but it has to be up there. What a disappointment.

    My sentiments exactly. Seems its only fun if you go there with the intent of acting like a complete fool.

    Here's my issue, it is about just getting a good veteran player. It is about getting the right one who is good enough on the ice that he can tell everyone off the ice to get their s#1t in order.

    Right - a guy like Jaromir Jagr for the Panthers or Marian Hossa back in the Blackhawks cup days. Doesn't necessarily have to be in your face, but a guy with enough talent to still be a top 6 player who can demonstrate how to go about being a winner.

    Problem is, for every one Jagr there are 10+ Okposo/Moulson players who fall off the cliff and can't back up the mentoring with their play.

    Which brings me back to 2009.

    With whom are you going to replace him?  (And it's not going to be Quenneville, and he's not that great anyway.)

    Revolving door.

    It revolves.  The Sabres fire and hire and fire and hire.

    The roster is the problem.

    The Sabres need to STOP hiring teachers as head coaches. I know I've said it before, but it hasn't worked each time they tried it.

    At the time it was said, it was true.

    The biggest area of impact is hiring coaches and GMs.  Pegula struck out with Babcock, but both his GMs have been first-timers.  Maybe he should have spent money on a GM and/or coach with more experience.

    Ironically, I think both the Bills and the Sabres have the best GM's they have had since Polian/Regier. I don't know if they lucked into it, but Terry and Kim did pretty good in my book on the GM front

    Oh, I understand.  I'd love to see you, but I'm already pissed off that I have invested in that game.

    I also have 3/1, and I am taking my closest friend, but I'll bet we spend about 10 minutes on hockey and about 3 hours catching up over a cheeseburger at 716.

    As much fun as it was seeing everyone over the last few years, I always felt like the game portion wasn't worth the investment* since it was such a sub par product. The best part was the pre/post game party with everyone.

    *the exception may be the MODO game v the leafs. That game was surprisingly good.
