  1. I think it's a fair deal.  I like the potential of Armia and Lemieux, but you have to give quality to get quality.  There are a few concerns with Kane, but he's a proven talent, as is Bogosian.  The only proven talent the Sabres gave up was Myers.  It was a steep price to pay, but that was to be expected. This is precisely why you stockpile picks and prospects - so you can make offers no other teams can, and no one would refuse.

  2. Yeah, that's one thing around here that is going to take some getting used to. Then again, yards in Boston were tiny too. I feel like I'm going to want to get some extra square footage inside the house just so we can have as much space of our own as possible. Indoors our outdoors, I'll take whatever I can get.

With 5 kids and 3 dogs, my wife and I swore off any of the new subdivisions because the yards were nil. We have 1/2 acre now and use every last millimeter of it. We were really surprised by this subdivision. The lot would be do-able on its own, but we have a large pond behind us and woods to one side of us, so it seems like a lot more than just 1/3 of acre.

  3. Thanks. I was mostly curious to see if certain builders were easy to work with or not and it sounds like you had no trouble with them. I'll search out some of their stuff later today.

I liked the sales guy with Lennar much more than the girl I'm dealing with at Ryan, and seem to like their options/flexibility better as well, but since everything with this house was essentially picked for me, I'm getting a way better deal than if I was doing it from scratch with either. My new house with Ryan is essentially the same size as one of Lennar's models, with a bigger lot, for around $30K less. I will say this about both Ryan and Lennar, is that they don't shoehorn all the houses in there, they actually have yards, which you don't see much with many of the new subdivisions. I'll have 1/3 of an acre and the guy across from me has 1/2, both fairly uncommon around here. We looked at one house with Adams and it was literally no yard at all, just a small concrete slab and a bush.

  4. If you don't mind me asking, which builder did you go with? The wife and are are playing around with the idea of new construction and I'd imagine that there is a significant overlap in builders in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas.

Ryan Homes. We sort of lucked into this one and didn't specifically choose them, but of the builders in our area, we seemed to like them the best along with Lennar and to a lesser extent Adams.. Eastwood homes and True Homes are the other two with communities in our town (20 mins west of Charlotte) and my wife's contractor uncle told us to avoid them at all cost.

We had no intention of buying a new home, but the real estate market in our town, for what we need, is virtually non-existent. This house was 95% complete and after 4 months of construction the couple building it couldn't get their mortgage. The builder gave us a huge discount to walk in and take it off their hands, as they don't build/sell spec houses like some others do. So I really can't comment on how they are to work with through the design process, but we've been pleased so far.

  5. Congrats, CSB! Hope all goes smoothly with the home inspection and all the related steps over the next few weeks!

It's new construction, so luckily no real surprises to deal with on the inspection front, but there's always *something* that can go wrong....

  6. Well worth the time to make the quick trip downtown to pick up Clint's book. He and his wife Joan were very nice and I probably could have stayed and talked with them both all afternoon if there wasn't a line. The gentlemen in front of me did a good job of chewing his ear off before it was my turn, so I complemented him on his boots, took a photo and got on my way.

One gentleman in line was Cliff from the arena formerly known as Sabreland out on Niagara Falls Blvd. He had a framed photo with him of "the incident" (This one: http://ipravda.sk/re...nestandard2.jpg) and recounted the story with Clint about how he was the first person to show Clint that photo after it happened and that Clint had laughed when he was shown the photo.

Clint ended up signing that photo for him years later and he brought it to the signing today to have the glass on the frame signed.

That's awesome. He was one of my favorite Sabres as a kid (I always went with the more obscure guys for some reason). I've asked for the book for Christmas, so we'll see if I get what I want.

  7. There must be some sort of promotion along with that big of a raise, right?

Not really. The promotion to VP came at my last review two years ago, and was accompanied by a 30% raise. I work for a small company, and the only person above me is the owner. He's approaching 60 (his self-appointed retirement age) in two years, and asked me what I wanted to stay on in the same capacity, to maybe see if I take over the company two years from now. I went into the review prepared for a 5% increase, but when he asked me what I wanted, I went higher and he agreed. Just last month we had reviews for two of my sales managers and I had to fight to get them a slightly less than 5% raise, so I was surprised he was amenable to my proposal.

  8. Then why is he still not on the Sabres collecting NHL $$$ on IR

I think it's a matter of being fit enough to play if he was really needed, but with some extra D available and ready to go in Rochester, there was no point in rushing him. That said, if I was McCabe I'd rather collect the $$ and sit in Buffalo.

  10. Does he eat poutine on game night?

My wife is convinced poutine could have killed me. I was in Montreal for work and had it 3 or 4 times in a four day span. A few days after I got home, I was rushed into surgery for an emergency appendectomy. She's certain it was poutine related.

  11. Whenever I'm at work (or anywhere, really) and come upon a group of people battling each other with tales of equal or greater woe about parenthood, I always have to remove myself from that scene. I would rarely lose that game, and if I did, it would be even more depressing.

In keeping with that, there are too many Jewish holidays that give the schools a day off.

When we moved from NY to NC I was in high school. I remember having a conversation with one of my teachers, asking why we didn't have the day off for (insert Jewish holiday here). I received nothing more than a blank stare, and then he said, "well, we're not in the Middle East, so why would you get it off?" I was one annoyed Christian that no longer got the Jewish holidays off.
