With Jacques Cloutier in Rochester and Daren Puppa playing well in Buffalo, the Sabres trade former Vezina- and Calder-winning goaltender Tom Barrasso and a third-round draft choice in 1990 (Joe Dziedzic) to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Doug Bodger and forward Darrin Shannon. Shannon is the fourth-overall pick in the 1988 draft, but the most games he plays in four seasons in Buffalo is 34 in 1990-91.

At San Jose, Pat LaFontaine records the first of his six hat tricks as a Sabre in a 7-1 win over the Sharks.

Wow. Why couldn't we hold our good players. Barasso was a great goaltender. I was away in air force at the time, so don't know the details of the trade or why Barasso had to go, but Pittsburg got the better of that deal. Bodger was pretty good but he was not equal to an excellent goalie like Barasso.
