Shots on goal....

Recommended Posts

I just checked the stats for shots on goal for the first five games for both this season, and the last. Gotta say, the new rules are great for the Sabres:

Last season

Game 1: 17 Sabres shut out

Game 1: 13 Sabres shut out

Game 1: 21

Game 1: 32

Game 1: 18

This season

Game 1: 39

Game 1: 41

Game 1: 35 Sabres shut out

Game 1: 41

Game 1: 36

The Sabres haven't had a game yet this season where they had fewer shots on goal than ANY corresponding game last season. 4-1 record emphasizes the difference even more.

Nice job compiling the stats. If nothing else, fans should get their moneys worth at HSBC this year...win or lose!

Any chance you have the Sabres PP shots? It would be interesting to see how much of their offense is created by the PP's. A big concern that the Sabres have expressed is that the penalties called will begin to decline. It is important that they can generate offense at even strength just in case.

The new rules are definitely the major reason. But I think Ruff has changed his philosophy, too, and that's the lesser reason why the Sabres all of the sudden are shooting with reckless abandon. Let's hope they keep it up.

They are generating offense even strength, the porewplay is terrible.

They may not be scoring on the power play but it does directly influence their even strength offense. Having allot of PP's helps tilt the ice even if you don't score. There have been times this year were the ice was tilted towards the Sabres end then a PP occurs and the ice tillts back. That is why some teams are having so much trouble. The PP's are interupting the natural flow of their offense. While teams like the Sabres use it to jump start or help maintain control. The Sabres succeed because PP's allow them to have their best players on the ice. Players like Pyatt and Peters only get token time if any at all.
