Well...NJ has to actually want him first.

Easy. Quinn Hughes is UFA in 2027. Dougie Hamilton is UFA in 2028.

Trade Dougie Hamilton in 2027 and sign Quinn to a good deal. Upgrade and get younger. Let the Hughes triumvirate (unless there are more coming) be their inexpensive core (by production) for the next 5 seasons. It requires Jack Hughes to stay healthy, but the talent is there at 1C and 1D.

And to the topic of the post:

I don't keep either long term.

As long as I can keep Dahlin, I'm good. I have my 1D/PP1, franchise guy who can compete for Norris' and can take over games.

Moving Power can get me 3 building blocks (1st rounder, player, + something). Moving Byram, who is fine as a complimentary piece to Dahlin but to no one else... might get me a 1st or a player. Either way, I can rebuild my D-corp for balance and get a 3rd pair guy who is a PP QB, get a forward, and picks.

Now, if losing Tuch causes Dahlin to say, "Enough!" --- then I go with Power over Byram. But that's worst-case scenario.

They should move on from Byram because he's mediocre.

They should move on from Power because he's passive.

They should move on from both.

I agree on that. I am curious and have to ask, how would you replace them and how would you like the D to be constructed?

If you move on from both, Mrtka probably ends up in Buffalo next season which I don't love. If possible, I'd like to see him go to Rochester for a year.

I think you can replace Byram with Novikov on the 3rd pair. Ik there's skating concerns but Novikov is positional and tough. There's also ufa and lower end guys you could trade picks or prospects for.

In the Power trade, I'd probably look for a team with good prospects, a decent nhl veteran lhd, and then build the trade around that. So maybe St. Louis and ask for Carbonneau, Broberg, and a 3rd or something.

Byram, I would look to Vancouver. I would try to get Chytil (yea I know he has a bad concussion history) and a 2nd round pick. I don't think you can get a ton more for Byram. If not Vancouver, than LA Kings would be an option. I would love to pry Liam Greentree from their cold dead hands (metaphorically) but I doubt Byram gets that done. Maybe Byram and one of the 400 RHD prospects (not Mrtka) can get you that. Outside of that, maybe they would part with Danault. Note that Danault has a modified NMC but that would be a player with TONS of experience that could help the team.

Power for Carbonneau, Broberg, and a 3rd

Byram, 3rd, and Kleber for Danault and Greentree (I am probably a bit light here for Buffalo)

Keeping Power would be definitely worst- case scenario!!!
