This Day in Sabres History :: May 8

May 8, 1975

Fresh off a turning-point overtime win in Game 5 at the Aud which gives them a 3-2 lead in the conference finals, the Sabres take a 4-1 first-period lead in the Forum and hold on to defeat the Canadiens 4-3 to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup finals. When the team arrives home at the airport in Niagara Falls at 2 a.m., they are greeted by 5,000 celebrating fans. "I get goosebumps thinking about it now," said defenseman Larry Carriere later. Sabres' fever has never been higher, a culmination of the love affair that was stirred in 1973, but the outpouring of support this time comes after defeating, not being eliminated by, the Habs. The Sabres win an odd series that sees them take two overtime games in Buffalo and also get blown out 7-0 and 8-2 in Montreal. Prelude to Bernie Parent's acrobatics, the fog game and heartbreak in Game 6, but perhaps the Buffalo Sabres' finest hour.

May 8, 1980

At the Aud, Bob Sauve stops all 22 Islanders shots and offensive defenseman John Van Boxmeer gets the winning goal as the Sabres beat the Islanders 2-0 to close to within three games to two in the Stanley Cup semifinal series. The Sabres record only 15 shots on goal, but make them count. Can the Sabres do the improbable and tie a series they trailed three games to none?

May 8, 1993

The Canadiens win their third overtime game of the series to sweep the Sabres four games to nothing on Aud ice in the Adams Division final. Kirk Muller scores in OT after the banged up Sabres heroically tie it on a goal by Yuri Khmylev with nine seconds to go in the third period. Each game is 4-3 -- Montreal goes on to win the Stanley Cup.

May 8, 1998

Geoff Sanderson scores his second goal of the night just 2:37 into overtime to win Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Marine Midland Arena against Montreal. The Habs tie it at 2 with goals 10 second apart late in the third period. But the Sand Man, who was benched for the final game of the series with Philadelphia, jumps on a loose puck to the left of Andy Moog and buries it, ending the Habs' 14-game playoff overtime winning streak.

May 8, 2001

At the Igloo in Pittsburgh, Mario Lemieux scores with 1:18 to go in the third period to tie Game 6 and in overtime Marty Straka converts a pass from the corner to win it. The Penguins tie the best of seven Eastern Conference semifinals at three games a piece, forcing a deciding Game 7 in Buffalo. Lemieux is seemingly the only player on the ice to see the puck drop out of midair after deflecting off Curtis Brown's skate and beats Dominik Hasek on his second whack at the puck.

See, if I had started that series in goal we would have won the cup that year. But no! You know who started and lost every game
