That is because you cannot perform the first without an expectation of performing the second.  You absolutely cannot separate a rebuild from a preceding tank.  When a tank exists, like sith, it must come with an understudy pair.

The biggest problem with the discussion was that although the tank was sold as a short term event, you cannot tank for 2 seasons without sufficiently removing talent from the roster to ensure a long, arduous rebuild period.  A period that is roughly the same length of time as a rebuild that didn't include tanking.

That’s true for how our Tank unfolded but I’m not sure it has to be. If the Sabres had brought in the right players to start the 2015-2016 season, the turnaround would have been quick. Murray’s rebuild was built around ROR, Kane, Lerner, Bogo, etc., and we made a few other crummy trades (e.g. Fasching), on our way to being the first team in NHL history to finish in 31st place.

I'm assuming those (3) #1's will be mid to late round picks that will take a fair amount of developing. Also, if the Blues continue playing like they have we won't get their 1st rounder this year.

Which is fine for us since we don’t need guys that are ready to step in within two years anyway. As long as we’re still getting talent, we can wait a few years before it’s ready and when we’ll need some lower priced guys then anyway (assuming we re-sign everyone we need to!).

And, yeah, kinda thinking we should just count on our 1st and the one from SJ for 2019 at this point.

  3. I was really impressed with the game presentation last night. The Sabres-Flyers rivalry montage during the 1st intermission was awesome and the Sabres montage (to “Guerilla Radio” by Rage Against The Machine) in the 2nd was great too.

FWIW, I actually like DJ Milk. I was wildly skeptical when I first saw him in that second game of the season but his intermission stuff has won the crowd over every time and it’s been a good way to pass the time until the players are back out. I like that we’re stealing an idea that’s worked in the NBA (versus just looking at what other hockey teams are doing).

I almost didn't click on the Sabres' Happy Thanksgiving video. I assumed it was going to be, "I'm Marco Scandella, and I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving." I'm glad I clicked. Skinner is thankful for Jack (cue assist). Jack is thankful for Skinner. Bogo is thankful for Hutton (big save after Bogo booboo). And so on. Good stuff. (Also, the Sabres have won seven straight.)

I forgot about Hutton stopping a three on none against the Rangers in the second game of the season. Epic play. And thank goodness we didn’t start 0-2 this year.

This was fun. A few observations from the nosebleeds:

    - Rasmus Dahlin is as smooth as any player on the team with and without the puck. There was a few times I thought he made the wrong decision but it turns out he is just smarter than me in those spots (and the Philly players he fooled).

    - ERod had a monster game. He had an impact nearly every shift and finally produced. Glad to see it from him. Remember when he was just a guy we brought in because he played with Jack in college?

    - Jack is still the best player on the ice at almost all times. So strong. Incredibly slick. Wish he got the empty netter.

    - Hutton is so in control of his movement. He won’t often make those unbelievable saves because he never lets himself get out of position for those to happen.

    - Sobotka is VERY good. I wasn’t expecting it but it was very clear watching up high that he’s an important piece for this team. There were several times where a handful of us were expressing some nerves and he just took a moment and calmed everything down. He’s Carter Hutton as a forward. Calm and in position. He might score as much as Carter Hutton but there’s a lot of value in his game. Steady.

    - McCabe had a monster game. He was feisty and absolutely doesn’t care who hates him. Aggressive. He became a man when we all kind of forgot about him. Pominville gushed about him, noting his injuries last year were things people didn’t notice but having him healthy is huge for the team.

    - Larry has some offense in him. He just needs to apply himself more consistently and learn how to handle a hard pass.

Reinhart had a similar game to Sobotka in the way he was constantly making the play you didn’t know you needed when you needed it the most. You definitely feel there’s more there for him to get to but happy with where he’s at.

    - Mittelstadt is FAST but always just a LITTLE bit away from making several big plays. He might explode.

    - Skinner is all over the place. He does more when his team has the puck than I expected. They talk about moving without the ball in basketball a lot but he’s mastered moving without the puck. If you puck watch too much he’s going to kill you.

    - Bogo has the yips. I found myself covering my eyes whenever he had the puck with pressure on him in his own zone. Something in his head right now.

    - Beaulieu had a bad night. Didn’t really do anything positive and had several notable bad moments.

Agree with literally all of this and glad you posted it. I randomly had a thought during the game that I was so happy we had Sobotka on the team, and he seemed like just a warm body we got back when we made that trade. He’s a steady player for us. I also loved that ERod had a monster game. He’s not the most skilled player by any means but he’s one of the most alert players I’ve ever seen and has an amazing sense for where to go or when an opportunity is there. I feel like he could contribute on any line if we needed him to.

  6. The first period was probably my best experience in the arena in nearly a decade. The Sabres were flying and the fans were completely bought in. I can’t remember the last time I heard so many strong “Let’s Go Buffalo!” chants, and there was a standing ovation when the period ended.

Then there was the rest of the game. The Sabres didn’t need to keep our-scoring the Flyers by 4 goals per period but they completely backed off in the 2nd and played without really any urgency. There was just a smattering of applause for 2nd intermission and the Flyers almost made it 4-3 on their first shift of the 3rd.

It would have been nice to not have to have Hutton bail us out again, but hopefully they learn from this. We’re good, but not nearly good enough to back off like that.

you can delete all the tank threads but we will always remember which side ended up being right.

    Gloating over.

    Go Sabres!

Haven't read the thread, but just looking at this post, I have no idea which side of the argument you're on.  It's almost 2019 and both sides of the debate think it's 100% self-evident that they're right.

  8. Does anyone else see Gudas’ name and immediately feel an immense sense of dread? Not because of what he can do as a player (because, really, he’s barely a hockey player) but because you know he’s only there to attempt a knee on knee hit or a flying elbow on someone like Dahlin, Jack, Casey, or Skinner?

It’s unbelievable this waste of space is still in the league.

I’d trade Nylander for Puljujarvi right now.  We need RW and I think this kid in the right situation can be a star.

Thought they were both RW?  I guess I'd be interested since Puljujarvi was taken so high and because Edmonton players generally benefit from a change of scenery but who knows with either guy at this point.
