  1. What I don't think happens in Buffalo, is that I don't think there is enough design with Vanek in mind. Organizationally, they really don't have that center (so that is Regier), and in terms of gameplay, I don't see nearly enough intention to get the puck on Vaneks stick to get him 5 or 6 shots a game. (that's Ruff).

Is there any design with anyone in mind? I don't know if the Sabres roster was ever "designed."

They accidentally caught lightning in the bottle the year after the lockout and had the best team in the league. The next year we won the Presidents' Trophy but weren't as good because Regier accidentally subtracted a ton of toughness from the team. After that, the Sabres were caught with their pants down and lost their two captains because they had no idea how free agency would go. After that PR nightmare, they decided to just re-sign EVERYONE they could (Hecht, Connolly, Pominville, Miller, Vanek) to prove to the fans that they could keep their own players. And since then the only roster moves involve trading second round picks for terrible rental players.

I think there's a better than 50-50 chance that Regier has never had a master plan for creating a team capable of winning the Stanley Cup.

  2. Stupid? Ha ha, ok kid. I see your Vanek love is pretty emotional. If you are actually saying we didn't pass up a lot to keep this guy you are just lying to yourself on purpose. Self-brainwashing.

Actually, it's not emotional. I'm the one bringing up his career stats. You're the one whining about the draft picks we didn't trade him for.

I think you are just splitting hairs and dancing the rail because you know I'm right.

You go on thinking that, Bob.

How is bringing up his career stats "splitting hairs"?

And BTW, I said he was heading towards worst bust ever, not there yet, but getting there quickly, and accecerating.

THIS would be an example of someone splitting hairs.

As to those four first round picks, you can whine and cry they wouldn't have turned out, but you can never say that for sure. It's just an unknown, but that is how it works.

Moron, I'm the one who said that we don't know if any of Edmonton's picks will turn out to be as good as Vanek. That was me. I said that above. You must have serious reading comprehension issues (or a wild imagination) if you think I have already written off every player Edmonton has drafted in the first round over the last four years.

Really, this is the season he was suppose to be the man. He's killing this team by not doing anything. That total flub in OT was just emblematic of his season of failure. The powerplay is the worst I have ever seen on this team. He doesn't seem to be helping out much in fixing that. Maybe he will have one of those hot months he has had in the past and lift the team into contention for awhile. And hopefully he won't fade again.

So EVERYTHING wrong with the Sabres is Vanek's fault because he's their highest paid player?

And would you admit that you might *maybe* be exaggerating things a bit when you say he's not doing "anything"? Our last two wins were shootout wins and he scored in both shootouts.

Now I know from this thread that you have trouble reading and understanding what other people write, so I'm guessing you might also have trouble remembering everything that happens in a hockey game that you just watched. That said, at least try to pay attention to the games before calling one of our only decent players the worst bust in team history.

  3. If there were more Vanek's we would have a Stanley Cup?

    Ohhh kay!

No, stupid, what I wrote was:

If he was our worst-ever bust, the rafters at HSBC Arena would be full of Stanley Cup Champion banners.

Meaning if Vanek was the worst mistake this team ever made, and every decision was better than drafting Thomas Vanek, then we'd be on of the most successful teams of all time.

Your comparison to that 2000 draft pick is problematical at best.

Not really. I'm saying a first round pick who never played an NHL game is a bigger bust than a first round pick with 176 career goals in 400 games and two 40-goal seasons. You seem confused by this.

Vanek isn't just some draft pick that didn't pan out. Those are a dime a dozen. He has a tremendous amount invested in him from this organization. We didn't waste a $10 million signing bonus and $7 mill a year {that's about right, isn't it?] plus gave up four first round draft picks--Edmontons picks no less!!-- for anyone else.

Actually we didn't "give up" ANY draft picks to keep him. We didn't trade draft picks to keep him; we were offered draft picks from someone else to let him go and didn't bite.

Is Vanek overpaid? Yes. Does it matter? Not really. We're still $5M under the cap. And we still tried to sign Koivu and Cullen last summer but neither player wanted to be here. Has that contract prevented us from signing or re-signing anyone yet?

So basically we're supposed to call Vanek our worst ever bust because we didn't effectively trade him for a bunch of draft picks who may or may not turn out to be as good as he is. That's your rationale?

  4. He's getting paid a lot of money to finish in those situations. Heck, Kovalchuk earned his money against us in OT.

Vanek is heading towards the status of this teams number one all time bust

He has 176 career goals in just over 400 games, including two 40-goal seasons. If he was our worst-ever bust, the rafters at HSBC Arena would be full of Stanley Cup Champion banners.

If you want a terrible bust, try Artem Kruikov from the 2000 draft. We passed on Brooks Orpik to take him in the first round. He had concussion problems when we took him and never even played an NHL game. Now THAT is a candidate for all-time bust.

  5. Fine. You win. Fire Lindy Ruff. It wont fix anything, but let's just do it anyway just for the lulz.

How do you know it won't fix anything? Are you 100% certain that Ruff is the best hockey coach we could ever have? There's 0% chance anyone could ever do a better job?

  6. Oh wonderful, so if a puck is laying next to Miller's head on the ice Avery can legally start kicking at the puck (and Miller's head)

    Great idea!

I'm pretty sure it's already against the rules to kick a goalie, or anyone, in the head when they're on the ice.

  7. Am I the only one who thinks the players should be allowed to kick the puck in the net?

    1. It's not going to become the new go-to tactic in the NHL. Kicking it in will still be harder than just scoring the old-fashioned way.

    2. We won't have to worry about stupid reviews when the puck goes in off someone's skate. ("His skate was moving but was that really a kicking motion? Blah, blah, blah...")

    3. We'd have higher scoring games.

The NHL is seriously the only sports league that hasn't figured out that more scoring makes the game more exciting. Crazy concept.

  8. 5-3... great shot by Montador.

It was a one-timer. Most of our offensive talent would have preferred to attempt about half a dozen fancy tricks before trying to put the puck on net. Montador just fired it as soon as it got to him. Nice.

Bonus: An assist for Connolly. If he racks up enough garbage points, maybe we can trade him for someone useful. [Darcy would need to grow a pair though.]

  9. Yeah, but those are hockey related distractions. And maybe having that interaction with the fans they run into at dinner and in the hotel, etc., would be good for them. It would keep their minds on the game to be played and that they are hockey players, here to win for their fans at home. I think it would be an idea that couldn't hurt.

How on earth is getting treated like a rock star by fans and groupies a "hockey distraction"? That's going to help their game?

If anything, I think we have too many guys on the team who like to live like rich, famous hockey players and don't care so much about actually winning a Stanley Cup. They're in it for the lifestyle.

The only player on the team who appears 100% dedicated to winning the Cup is Miller. How dedicated is everyone else? Who knows?

  10. For the next homestand, the Sabres should pack their bags like it's a roadtrip and stay as a team downtown at the Regency. Eat as a team, live as a team, no distractions of family, home or the bars.

Not sure that would work. They'd still be living in a hotel and eating in restaurants in a city where people go crazy for them and would constantly be asking for autographs, etc. You'd have all the same distractions, maybe more.

If they need extra focus for home games, it's just going to have to come from within. I don't think a gimmick can get it done.

  11. This team is completely off right now. I'm really not even sure what the root cause of the problem is. It seems like everyone up and down the lineup including the coaches are just in a complete funk. There's not just one person you can pinpoint blame on because no one has really been overly better than anyone else on this team. This is the true sign of adversity, and during the next three days when they sit on this 4 game losing streak and think about what's going on will we see how this team reacts. I hope they don't just fold up and let the losing continue, but nothing indicates to me that they will turn this around. This is frustrating.

After last year's playoffs, the Sabres roster clearly had some issues that needed to be addressed. Darcy's response? He did nothing. Other than Leopold, we didn't sign anyone that other teams were really hot for. And we sure as hell didn't make a trade to change our team.

This roster wasn't put together to win the Cup. It was patched together with Darcy's usual half-assed, scared-to-do-anything-ever effort.

  12. Tonight was the night where Cody McCormick officially became a more effective NHL player than Tim Connolly. Thanks for the memories, Tim.

Could this roster be any more convoluted? Who is the top line? Who are we counting on to score a big goal late in the game? At this point I'm counting on guys like Gerbe more than our veterans.

No reason not to play Weber in the next game. But I don't think Lindy is serious about sending a message.

  13. That is the worst second period they have played since the ECF last year. Yikes.. The Leaks totally dominated the Sabres.

How many games have the Sabres played this year where they played good hockey for 60 minutes? Like 3 or 4?

We're seeing an adverse effect from the winning streak these last two games. The Sabres come out flat and are completely baffled when the opposing team isn't letting them do whatever they want.

  14. Man it sounded loud tonight! You'd have thought it was late May...

It was loud after the game too. People were celebrating and chanting and yelling all over the arena on their way out. It took about 10 minutes to get out from where we were sitting (section 323) and it was getting louder the whole time. People were high-fiving everywhere and honking their horns (to "Let's Go Buffalo") outside in traffic. It was insane. I've never seen a regular season game with an aftermath like that. Not even close.

And we're 2-0. When we win the Cup they're going to have to call in the National Guard to restore order.....

  15. I'll take the win every time, but I am also disgusted at the handful of idiots throwing crap on the ice in the middle of play. I know the officiating sucked, and I wanted to jump on the ice myself, but this isn't Philly or Toronto or New York - behave with some class and restraint during the game, and don't act like you should be wearing a an orange & black sweater.

I was at the game and I can tell you that once the refs started calling penalty after penalty, the place just went insane. That was easily the loudest regular season game that I can remember. It sounded like a Guatamalan insane asylum in there.

The best games are always the ones where a riot almost breaks out over the officiating. I swear people were coming up with entirely new noises to make near the end.
