Maybe all this was explicable. And why he was kept up. Are you prepared to say Phil and Jason handled him properly and sending him down would have been a mistake?

If this continues, of course! The frustration came from seeing him ostensibly make zero progress through the first 20 games. I was high on him when we got him in the trade but he strikes me as a guy that will need time to develop into a well-rounded player. Playing in all situations in the AHL makes sense for that.

But he has looked A LOT better these last four games. And if this continues, then they did whatever it took to develop him into a legit NHL player. But it’s only four games and he still has a ways to go.

Obviously, I hope this all continues. We’ve been a different team with him contributing. Being wrong is a small price to pay for that and literally everyone on this board who’s been here a while has been wrong dozens of times.

Just imagine how nasty this place would be if the Sabres had not just won their ninth game in a row and are sitting on top of the league standings.

BUT THEN HOW ELSE WOULD WE PROVE WHO IS SMARTEST ON A MESSAGE BOARD?

I don't think a lot of the criticism — or the tone of it — was fair. Not just you, young lad. "He sucks." "He needs to be in the AHL." A little perspective was lost on a 20/21-year-old prospect. Especially given a lot of the good things he was doing. Understandable. We've been conditioned to expect too much from young talent that wasn't quite ready to deliver.

I've never fancied myself a talent evaluator, but my eyes weren't letting me agree with the consensus. I do feel a bit redeemed. But guess what? He'll be up and down.

I was actually impressed with how fair the criticism was.  I didn't see anyone really give up on him or call him a bust.  Saying a young player that is struggling - and, especially, barely getting any playing time - should be playing in the AHL is pretty measured as internet criticism goes.  And TT really beat the odds by inexplicably turning it on in the last week.

Guhle doesn't seem to be reacting too well to being shuffled down the priority order. He went from being on the precipice of the league to being passed over by at least 2 players (dahlia and pilut). If push came to shove you'd have to wonder if they'd bring Redmond up ahead of him. He went from being the only dog in the window to surrounded by more attractive choices. Gotta wonder if it's messing with his head and he's now pressing, trying to impress and regain his status.

He’s still young and learning. Developing players rarely happens in a straight line — there are lots of ups and downs. Up in Buffalo, we were all ready to drive Tags Thompson down to Rochester...literally this month. (Check the GDT for the Pittsburgh game from Monday.)

Guhle has a ton of talent and has already played pretty well in his NHL appearances. I’m fine giving him time. Jason Pominville played over 200 AHL games before becoming a full time NHL player.

In other Amerks news, they were back to winning tonight with Pilut back in the lineup. Nylander had an ENG and made a nice play to set up Porter for a goal as well so he’s coming on. And Guhle had an assist. ?

...They gave Eich an assist on the OT goal?

Yep. OT goal was Skinner from Jack and Dahlin. Tying goal originally was a shot from Bogo, tipped by Reinhart, and then rebound in from Skinner. I guess they’re saying Reinhart didn’t touch it after all and now it’s from Bogo and Jack.

  6. Was excited that we might get a look at him but we can wait a little longer and not force it.  Getting a chance to spend a few days in Buffalo with the big club, especially during two exciting home wins, had to be fun and will keep him motivated. Missing a couple AHL games won’t hurt his development and we can let him get some more experience before bringing him up for good when we have a long term injury to deal with.

In the meantime, wouldn’t mind putting Nelson back in tomorrow and “resting” Scandella after his game today.

Eating crow alert.  I was get rid of either or both of Zemgus and Larry before the season.    They have embraced their roles and are valued contributors to the team.

That’s nothing. I was DEMANDING that they get rid of both of them. Oops.

Though he didn't score, believe this was his best game.  If he can keep playing like this we could have 4 lines that all work.  Had you told me we'd see that next year, would have agreed absolutely.  This year?  Prior to the winning streak, nope, wouldn't have bought it until mid-February at the earliest.

With both Mittelstadt and Sobotka stepping up, and now TT coming on, our four lines are starting to feel pretty good. We already have the best top line and best checking line we’ve had in ages.
