  1. This has nothing to do with race. and when GMs are trying to make their team better for a cup run the only time Kanes past comes into play is during negotiations. These guys would sign Ted friggin Bundy if he could score 25-30 goals in season.

I think race does have a small play in EK perception. Not across the board, and EK has earned the skepticism to a point based on his actions, but I do believe if EK was white the comments would be a little less across the board.

Oh, he'll be moved. And his return will be better than that "second and a prospect" nonsense.

Agreed. It is now 9:41EST and from now to 3PM is an eternity for the Trade Deadline.

Side note: NHL, PLEASE think this through: Make the NHL Trade Deadline a PRIMETIME event, clear the schedule, no games and make it great for the fans.

No fans celebrate a trade deadline like NHL fans. None.

  2. Great post and thanks for sharing and also have a great vacation!

I found the Botterill comment encouraging for sure, good to know that the Sabres are in capable hands at the GM position.

The Eichel comment was revealing too and I agree: Stop making Eichel what he may not be: Allow him to just play his game and do NOT force the C on him.

  3. I agree but why do I have the feeling that next Tuesday morning after nothing significant happens with deals poor Botterill will be hammered away at for not getting enough or not doing enough. Trade deadline day is exciting for fans and media to speculate and discuss then be let down about in most cases it seems.

So true but I don't think Sabres fans should expect the world this deadline.

JBot has shown so far he has a plan and is sticking to it. Drafted Middlestadt. Building up Rochester and the pipeline. Even a move like Colin Wilson was a decent pickup. Not every move a GM makes will be great, there will be some that just do not work out. Botterill inherited a messy situation and deserves time to clean it up. Just listen to a GMTM interview and a JBot interview. It is night and day in terms of a plan and intelligence level. I trust Botterill and can't wait to see how he fares in the off-season and draft in 2018.

  4. I just can't watch any more close ups of Lindsey Vonn.

Um, Bronze means she's the second loser.

Let's just be honest. NBC is obsessed with Vonn these Olympics for one reason. The podium and the President. It's all NBC can think about.

  5. If there is one move that I could reverse somehow during the dawn of the tank (pre Sam Reinhart) would be to have a guy like Botterill be the GM at that time instead of GMTM, who most of us thought was the right GM but was proven so wrong. We have the right GM now but we really needed him before the Sam Reinhart draft and beyond. The Sabres would be completely different and a playoff team by now.

We just need to be patient. Again. :wallbash:

  6. Every team goes through bad seasons.  Some manage to go longer without going through them and some manage to take less time.  Some get lucky.

Which Real GMs are you referring to?

Any evidence to support the other assertions?

I hope your bunker is solid.

I hope your denial shields you

  7. I have no problem with Zay Jones. I don't trust McDermott judgement until he proves it isn't a fluke.

I do agree with this, but Bills fans may want to prepare for a 'take one step back before taking two steps forward' approach to 2018, especially if Buffalo drafts a QB high in the draft.

The fan base better be prepared to be patient.

  8. Adding Jesse Puljujarvi or Olli Juolevi instead of Nylander would not appreciably affect the long-term outlook of the franchise.

And our Matthews chances would have been 20% assuming we'd finish at the bottom, which is not a guarantee at all. They more likely would have been under 15% even if we had wanted to lose on purpose.

That's true, we never benefit from such lotteries :wallbash:

  9. Decent discussion re: ROR for Hanifin over on HFBoards. It's mostly Canes fans saying no. Surprisingly it isn't ROR's cap hit, but rather his 2-way game that dissuades them. They want an offensive-minded gunner to play alongside Skinner. Defensive responsibility be damned!

    What says you, Sabres fans?

ROR for Hanifin? I would personally drive ROR to the airport, thank him for his efforts, and welcome Hanifin with open arms

  10. Sure this is a little premature, but with the deadline looming and the team self destructing, Jbot has already begun in off-season preparations. So put yourself in Jbots place. Make changes to make us competitive and try to be realistic.

Here are the major questions as far as I’m concerned, you may have others.

    1) What do you do with TM’s big $ acquisitions. Kane’s fate is sealed, but what about ROR, Lehner, KO, Bogo and even Nylander and Reinhart? If you trade them what can you get? Are any of them part of the problem or solution? Which ones are lockerroom trouble?

    2) Is Mittelstadt pencilled in as a Sabre next year or an Amerk?

    3) Has Phil and his staff been part of the problem or the solution?

    4) Do you fix the D or O with the top 5 pick?

    5) Do you work to try to make the playoffs next year or do you work to get younger, faster and hope for the playoffs if the kids gel?

Good post as always and this is a good topic

I think Kane's looming UFA status are hurting him more then the team. Time to move on. ROR is what he is: Drury Part II (when Drury signed with NY), meaning his contract will never add up to his numbers. Lehner has to go.  Okposo can still be salvaged and be a solid 50 point guy, still his contract is too rich but we have to deal with it.  Reinart: Let him play along the Top 6 guys the rest of the year, stop messing with him and let's see what we have. I still feel in my gut Sam can be part of the solution going forward.

    2) Is Mittelstadt pencilled in as a Sabre next year or an Amerk?

Too early to say. Early returns on JBot suggest to me that they will not rush CM. And I think not rushing CM is the right call.

    3) Has Phil and his staff been part of the problem or the solution?

I have been one to call for Phil's firing, and he has been part of the issue, but stepping back and taking a deeper look, he should be allowed more time. Still an incomplete grade.

    4) Do you fix the D or O with the top 5 pick?

Defense, 100 percent. Sabres need a true offensive skilled defensemen to help our forwards.

    5) Do you work to try to make the playoffs next year or do you work to get younger, faster and hope for the playoffs if the kids gel?

I say you do both. Evidence suggests teams can turn around quick and fall just as easy (Ottawa and Edmonton fall) (Colorado and NJ rebounded quickly)
