Way to follow that bouncing ball, sir.

I'm not sure JBOT can get it done, but he's going about his business in a smart way, which I do appreciate.

    I agree,

Really feel the sad tale for us Sabres fans if that we really needed this kind of GM before the first tank (For Sam). We didn't need a GM like GMTM to then sign players to bad contracts. If JBot was our GM for 4 years pre Eichel tank and then left, then a GM like Murray would have been more effective. Botterill will build this roster properly. Unfortunately, once again, we just have to be a little patient and our patience has worn thin.

  2. I don't really get all the hate for this deal.

OReilly was making 7.5 per a season, and matching that $ value with his skillset and the long length of the contract, yes Ryan has value: But how much? And considering his statements in the off-season as well, that raised a ref flag as well. And oh yeah, that incident off the ice. Another small red flag IMO.

Tage needs to develop more. Will Tage be elite? Doubtful. Can Tage be a Top 6 forward? Possibly.

Plus with the likelihood San Jose makes the playoffs this year, Buffalo now has 3 1st round picks in 2019.

There is still more to the story to be told.

  3. I'm not on this train.

    Me either.

The Housley hire I do agree looks questionable, but let's be fair: Murray left JBot with an absolute MESS. I would allow this season to play out and even the 2019 off season before throwing too many stones at Botterill.

We needed this GM when Eichel was drafted, and now we have him and we are frustrated and impatient I get that completely.

  4. The teams who are tied are not always playing each other the 3rd game though.  How about this instead?

Before the tournament, all 4 teams in each group gather in a stadium.  Each group could have it's own site or you could double up, whatever.  You do a round robin PK competition.  5 kicks v. each team.  You then rank each team 1st through 4th in the group based on the number they convert.  If there is a tie between 2 teams they do sudden death right then to settle it.  That way everyone goes into the tournament knowing where they stand with respect to the tie breaker after GD.  Also, it's another thing for FIFA to televise and sell tickets for.

I like this idea as well. All better then having this decided by referee calls.

  5. I guess it's possible, but I don't think an 18 year old kid is going to change the temperature of the room. I remember when the Jack Eichel hates to lose mantra was being parroted by lots of people on here and how he was going to single handedly carry the team on his back out of the gutter but that hasn't really worked so far. The supposedly staged hissy fit where he threw some trash cans around the locker room (or whatever it was) close enough for the press corps to hear the them clang against some lockers was a nice touch, but even after that feigned outrage he and the rest of the team seem to adjust to losing pretty well. Sure O'Reilly became emo and plays with razor blades in the corner while listening to NiN but that hasn't exactly inspired anyone to greatness either.

I think the team will improve as the cap anchors slowly get replaced by better younger/hungrier players and the talent level increases. The team will eventually start to win more games and winning more ultimately brings the team out of the funk. You rarely hear about locker room issues for winning teams. I'm sure they still have many of the same issues (partiers, personality conflicts, etc.) that fractured locker rooms have, the difference is that people don't care as much if the team is winning.

Can't say this any better myself.  Great post.

Very interesting and eye popping to see the numbers in front of you, Enter in 10M for AAV for John Tavares and when you realize JT would NET 5M more from Tampa or Dallas with a contract for 1 LESS season, it makes you realize not if,  but when this becomes an issue with the next CBA.

And just remember, this is just 1 contract. Imagine the advantages when you factor in 20. This hurts Toronto a ton, and especially hurts the Sabres because for some players, there are markets that are more desirable, and when you factor in the taxes, they won't come here. Those are just the facts.

Not sure what can be done to fix this, but something needs to be done. Maybe a percentage bump for teams with higher taxes to consider. The agents know this, the players know this, and it is being exploited in cap leagues like the NHL and even the NBA.

  7. Yup. Sounds like Montreal thought a #11 and a #33 pick was good enough to get ROR which is ridiculously hilarious.

    Agreed.

The Sabres do not have to get desperate and just deal Ryan at this time. Even if the Sabres keep him, perhaps there will be a deadline type deal. Ryan can still play. And do a lot well.

  8. I like him, and Bernier. Both arent too old and have had some success as backups to be looked at as potential #1s. Although I worry that Berniers to me in Toronto destroyed his potential like most goalies that have gone there. Both could be potential #1s if they can get back to the way they were a few years ago and would pressure Ullmark into starting right away. If they want to go older veteran, I would talk to Ottawa about Anderson

Good call on Anderson too, would also serve as a mentor for Ullmark

He doesn't get me excited but he might be okay.  The biggest concern is that the Wings have been in a death spiral for most of his time there; not sure if that mentality is in his head.

Possibly, but I think Mrazek's fall had a lot more to do with what was in front of him. His 2014 and 2015 numbers were very good
