  1. Derek Roy's play now compared to the start of the season is a perfect example of letting a player build some confidence. If the NHL continues it's infraction crackdown into the future, Roy will be a 2nd line Sabres center for many years to come.

By the time all is said and done, we might even retire his number.

  2. Can we say 6-2????!!

By the way, how the hell does McKee get a penalty for talking to Domi....nice job "new" NHL, way to reinforce the idea that if you stick up for your teammates, you are doing the wrong thing.

McKee got two minutes for TAKING a punch in the face. Domi...once a cheapshot always a cheapshot.

Peeved that rookie Don Edwards will be given the start in goal, Sabres' backup goalie Al Smith hops off the bench after the national anthems, waves to owner Seymour Knox in the crowd and skates off the ice, never to be seen again. Without a backup, Edwards gets his first win in the NHL as the Sabres spank the Minnesota North Stars 6-2 at the Aud.

Great moment in Sabres history. I love reading the ones that I experienced first hand, but have long forgotten about.

    Bye Al!!

  4. Carolina really poured it on in the 3rd period and in OT. Considering the travel circumstances and going against the #1 team in the conference, I'll take the point. Trade Mika or trade Marty, but Lindy has to find a way to work the #2 goalie into the rotation come March. If not, Miller will be burned out by playoff time.

Led by five different scorers and 35 saves by Dominik Hasek, the Sabres break a five-game winless streak with a 5-2 victory over Montreal at Marine Midland Arena. It's just the Sabres' fourth win in their last 16 games as their second-half slump worsens. It's a night of oddities ?Jay McKee is a healthy scratch, and Paul Kruse, Mike Wilson and Randy Cunneyworth all get their first goals of the year. Cunneyworth's goal is his first as a Sabre since November 1981 and marks the longest span between goals for one player for one team in NHL history.

Any idea if the Cunneyworth record still stands? Pretty amazing.

  6. Glad to see the Sabres steal a point, but that was UGLY. Considering that Kovalev has terrorized the Sabres for two games, don't you think they should have been paying just a wee bit of attention to him during the overtime?

It sounded like the crowd never even got a chance to get into the game.

Nothing more to say about this game. Time to move on to Saturday.

    GO SABRES!!!

  7. -Another big road win for the Sabres.

-Screw you Habs fans and your stupid chant "ole, ole, ole..." or whatever it is your chanting.

-Anybody notice Fitzpatrick last night? No? That's because he is playing better the last few games since replacing Kalinin.

-I'm still being cautious about Miller, but I'm starting to believe this guy can carry the Sabres come playoff time.

-I've said it all year and last night was a perfect example. You don't want Campbell on the blueline come playoff time. He was directly responsible for both goals. First one, has was dogging it on the backcheck after an ill advised pinch. Second one, he has just caught napping as Kovolev got behind him. Dress him as a 7th defenseman for the PP, but do not use him in the regular rotation come playoff time.

-Good to see Max bury a couple. He's the only Sabre you can cheer for and scream at in the same shift. :)

-Anybody else feel Tallinder is quietly becoming the Sabres best overall defenseman?

-His timing is bad(so far), but I like the fact that I have seen Vanek go down to attempt a shot block several times over the last couple of games.

-Pound the Habs back in Buffalo, get the Florida monkey off our back and then off to Carolina for a showdown before the break!

    GO SABRES!

    GO SABRES!

    GO SABRES!

  8. -Who says the shootout is boring? I was standing up in my living room during the whole thing. Crowd sounded like they were really into it.

-That was one of the worst OT's I have ever seen. It's almost like both teams wanted it to go to a shootout.

-Hasek is still the man and played like a 30 year old, not a 40+ something goalie.

-I thought Ottawa's best player last night was Schaefer. The guy was hitting everything in sight the entire game.

-What can you say about Vanek and that shot....WOW!

-The Sabres really shut down Alfredsson, Heatley and Spezza. I'd love for the Sabres to give it a shot and try to skate with Ottawa, but if playing this style gets us two points, all the more power to Lindy.

-Gaustad showed last night why you want players like him on your team come playoff time. He was hitting, had a couple of chances and you could just tell that he raised the level of his play up a notch.

    GO SABRES!!!!!!

In the Sabres' first season, Eddie Shack records a hat trick in a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings at the Aud. Denis DeJordy is the unlucky Kings' goalie. Anyone remember Denis DeJordy? Didn't think so? But almost every old-time fan remembers Shack, an entertaining "clown prince" of the game and former Maple Leaf who was acquired along with another former Leaf, Dick Duff, in December from the aforementioned Kings (Sabres' GM Punch Imlach had coached Shack in Toronto). One of Shack's trademarks was to skate to center ice when he was named one of the three stars and do a pirouette. He certainly did one on this winter night in downtown Buffalo. For the record, Shack scored 36 goals in two seasons with the Sabres.

The Sabres send Brad May and a third-round draft choice in 1999 to Vancouver for Geoff Sanderson. The Sand Man scored one of the nicest goals in Sabre history in the Eastern Conference Finals against Toronto, fending off the stick of trailing defenseman Sylvain Cote with one hand and shoveling the puck past Curtis Joseph with the other to give the Sabres a 5-3 lead midway through the third period in Game 1 in Toronto, a game the Sabres would win, 5-4. Remember? Sanderson pulled the puck to his forehand, got Cujo to shift to Sanderson's left then flicked it against the grain inside the right post! But it seems many fans remember him instead for so many botched breakaways. The speedy Sanderson, like Shack, would score 36 goals as a Sabre, including seven in the playoffs, during the course of three seasons in Buffalo. Sanderson and Dwayne Roloson, another hero from the Air Canada Centre that night, were selected by Columbus in the expansion draft in 2000.

I loved Eddie Shack as he skated behind his own net with the puck like an out of control locomotive heading toward the opposing teams zone. Great early memories!

Mark Hamister and Todd Berman run out of time to put together a deal to buy the Sabres. "I still think the Buffalo Sabres are important, but I couldn't pull it off," Hamister said. Tom Golisano says he is willing to resume negotiations.

In case anyone is wondering, here is what happened to Hamister's "money man" Todd Berman...

  11. -I thought Fitzpatrick played a solid game which was near his level of play from two years ago. We really need him to step up and play well over the next two weeks leading up to the Olympic break.

-I wonder if Drury is hurting a bit. I've noticed his play has tailed off recently and I'm not referring to points, but more his general play. He seems like the kind of guy that when wearing the "C", that he wants to get out there and lead by example even when hurting.

-Nice goal by Pyatt. Stick your nose in the front of the net and good things will happen to a player with your size.

-Hey Darcy...SIGN MILLER TO AN EXTENSION NOW!!!!

-Some of the refs are pitiful!

-Ottawa needs to be put in their place on Saturday...GO SABRES!!!

  12. -Kudos to all the transplanted Sabres fans at the game. It sounded like there were at least a couple of thousand of them.

-Game was very similar to the Toronto game in that the Sabres were loosy goosy in their own end for a period and a half and then came out and dominated the third period. The Sabres will really have to play better to beat Philadelphia, Ottawa and Carolina who are all coming up in the next week and a half.

    -Miller was freakin' outstanding.

-Time to give Tallinder his due. Not only has he been playing solid in his own end, but somewhere along the line, he became a nice option for lugging the puck out of his own end.

-I've noticed Vanek has been giving a better effort and even playing a little physcial since being paired with Drury and Grier. Nice move Lindy.

-Pominville continues to show that he wants to be in the lineup come playoff time. I thought he was a one dimensional player(goal scorer) who was on the slow side. Instead, I continue to see a guy who's playing both ends of the rink and doesn't appear to be that slow to be. What a great example for "making the most of a chance".

-Great to see Dumont blow by the defenseman and bury that shot upstairs.

    Go Sabres!!!!!!!!!!

In the midst of the Blizzard of ?77, only 14 Sabres have made a flight to Montreal for a game with the Canadiens. The Sabres still find a way to tie the powerhouse Habs, 3-3, at the Forum. And Voice of the Sabres Ted Darling, snowbound back in Buffalo, still finds a way to broadcast the game: while watching it on TV, he does play by play over the phone from his living room.

Thanks for jogging my memory. The Sabres fans have been privileged to have two all-time greats in the booth...Ted Darling & Ric Jeanneret.

The only low point in Sabres play by play announcer history is when John Gurtler held the TV job for a couple of years. I don't know where is he is now and I don't really care. Freakin' terrible is an understatement.

  14. See, kids, it is possible to resolve your conflicts peacefully. In this case, I tried to level a hipcheck that would wreck LabattBlue's ACL for weeks. But he, being the guy that he is, avoided the hit. I think it would have been a clean hit, and the rest of the Rangers agree. But some Sabres disagree.

As grownups, we realize it's ok if LabattBlue likes Miller, and if Eleven likes Budweiser. We both hope you learned something from this.

 LabattBlue never drinks Miller. Now what was I saying about Biron...

Let's finish off this road trip with a good effort against Atlanta and then come on home boys.

In a completed unrelated sidenote, my 3 most hated Leafs...

    It's a dead heat...Sundin, Tucker & Domi.
