I think Vegas very much can match Minnesota. They have drafted well in their short time and even have a couple of Russians if we want to continue to go that route.

I agree with you on Minnesota having the best options at this point but having teams bidding against each other is the key to maximizing our return.  Let's get her done Kevin.

Saw an article on TSN proposing a Win/Win blockbuster deal between the Sabres and the Leafs

Leafs trade Marner to the Sabres for Dahlin

Dahlin is on a rookie deal and has regressed from his rookie deal while Marner is  a talent that can help them replace Eichel.

Leafs get a defencemen that can turn things around and be cheap for now while also freeing up cap space while helping Buffalo stay above the Cap floor

many comments have Leafs fans not liking this deal because they think the Leafs should get more in return for an unproven player (even though he was a 1st overall pick that many were calling a generational prospect IIRC, even though the biggest part of this deal is that the Leafs would get a potential upgrade on defence where they need help, and most importantly, free up cap space at a time when the Cap is not supposed to increase much for a bit

I believe Dahlin will be fine and is needed as part of our core.  I assume they suggested this trade because Buffalo drafted Owen Power and because the Leafs have real salary cap issues.  I would not want to make the trade.

As others have said Marner is a very talented player that has established himself in the NHL as a top player (the playoff numbers will materialize I'm sure).  I think he would be pretty disgruntled at this point in his career to be traded to a rebuilding Sabres team going against Adams principle of getting players that want to be here.

The biggest questions with the Russians is will they come over and when?  With 3 of the 4 Russians developing in Russia, it could be 3-4 years until they come to NA.

Yes makes you think for sure.  I think that if the players can make the NHL team that it's not a concern (primarily because the NHL can offer better contracts and salaries long term than the KHL) but it may be an issue to get sent down to Rochester to develop.

We will see.  Looks like some great skills on these Russian players selected.  I agree we may be waiting a couple of years at least.  Time will tell.

  4. At this point I'm not sure there's much else to say on the potential Eichel trade.  We've all put forward trade scenarios that make sense for the Sabres from our perspective.  We keep hearing that other teams don't want to include A+ prospects (which doesn't make sense to me because Jack is taking the place as their new #1 center so give future quality for a for sure thing).  Until we get some credible news about a potential trade scenario it's hard to keep speculating.

I don't know how to improve the "health situation" uestions.  It didn't help that Adams said he did not know if Jack was skating again (like his agent said).  Is he improving as expected he would with rest, physio, and exercise?  Does he really need surgery?  If so what's recommended?

Taking back salary?  Okay with me but then again Adams said that he doesn't want veterans taking away ice time and critical game situations from the young core (he said that in regards to FA's).  So perhaps we take back a dead contract where the player is on injured reserve.  We do have a need for a veteran or two on the blue line in my opinion ideally on the right side.  We do have a need for a goalie veteran even if Ullmark resigns with us.  It's easy to take back money but I don't blame Adams for being selective with what he takes back.  The players have to fit the team and help build the team's culture.  Perhaps the best thing would be to consider salary retention (but that just sounds nuts to pay for part of Eichel's salary to play for another team).

I'm sure Ullmark and his agent have the outline of a deal with the Sabres. It is a contract that he can compare to other offers. If another team is willing to go much beyond it he might consider the outside offer. But I lean towards what @tom websterstated in his post.

I think it depends on what Ullmark wants.  He may want to test FA to see what kind of interest is out there for him.  The good news about Adams comments is that it sounded to me like he will get the best money offer from the Sabres to be our number 1.

Teams in FA that might want to sign Ullmark that are contending cup favorites are up against the cap so they won't be able to pay as much.  In the end I think it comes down to does he want the money from the Sabres or does he want to win now with a contending team.  Example Leafs are interested, not sure who else has an open spot but I'm sure that there are some options for him.

Hopefully he takes a quick look and then signs with the Sabres.

They had a deal in theory with Briere down. Management said choose only one and the one is Drury. Drury saw the writing on the wall and got the hell out of dodge.

Looking back on Drury and Briere today it would have been a mistake to sign either of them to the deals that they both eventually signed.  Both were bought out of their contracts.  Briere had the most success but Drury went down hill pretty quickly (3 full seasons and a part) with the Rangers.  Briere continued to be a great playoff performer.

That being said I agree that losing both of them was a real hit to the team's culture and it may have been (actually I think that it would have been) great to sign Briere in hindsight.  I don't think Drury ever wanted anything except to sign with the Rangers and it would have been better if he had just come out and said that to Darcy.

The team was choosing between the two and wanted Drury over Briere.  I think for the most part the fan base at the time agreed (if we could only sign one of them).

    Day 2

Day 1 they got 7th... so really 8 is probably their total  rank.

Not trying to be a smart ass but how do you get 7th for day 1 when you pick the consensus #1 player (at least according to media from poll of scouts) and then you get a second pick in the first round.

One part of the Friedman stuff that I forgot to mention is that free agency is likely a deadline for some teams. Those teams will want a resolution on Eichel because they will pursue free agents and spend money elsewhere. That’s another point where Eichel’s value will be impacted (though it will go down for some and up for others who strike out).

I agree that's the next expected trade time frame.  Let's see.  The good thing is that there are not any great 1st line centers on the FA market but there is players to spend money on.

Can someone clarify this: I heard the plan is that Levi stays 4 years and is a UFA. If this is true what did we actually acquire of any value?

This was mentioned in a Craig Button interview about him but that's because he was buried in the Florida system behind Spencer Knight and Sergei Bobrovsky.

He will get a chance in Buffalo to play in the NHL so I would think he would take it.  Then again I thought the same about Calvin Petersen who decided to play out his time and then sign with the Kings.  It's a risk for sure but the player gets older to take that risk / reward.

Advising his kid not to play for Buffalo. Sure his career hasn't been amazing, imagine how much worse it would have gone in the poop tornado that is Sabres development.

Brendan Lemieux hasn't exactly had a great career so far.  He's moved from Buffalo to Winnipeg to NY Ranger to LA Kings and hasn't cemented a spot anywhere.  He needs to work hard to stay in the NHL so there's not much room for being cocky about who he plays for.

For my personal choice its either ducks or kings I want that 2022 first  Unprotected and we good

I agree that it's best to get an unprotected 1st round pick if possible but something we don't talk about with a protected 1st round pick is that you can only protect it the first year.  If it moves to the second year it's no longer protected.  Ottawa got burned on that one in the Matt Duchene trade with Colorado.  Ottawa chose to move it out a year and Colorado ended up with the 4th overall pick choosing Bowen Byram.

The counter argument is that good teams could trade an unprotected pick like San Jose did for Erik Karlsson when Ottawa received the 3rd overall pick and chose  Tim Stutzle.  I would think that this scenario is why good teams still want to insist on protecting the pick.

Samuelsson's father is well schooled in the world of the NHL. If he is counseling his son he would certainly be telling him that he is in a situation where he will be afforded a golden opportunity to play sooner and establish himself as a player in the league than he would be with other franchises. He would be telling his son to prepare himself the best he can and seize this opportunity in front of him.

I believe Mattias Samuelsson has a great opportunity with the team next year as a top 4 D on the left side.  I would think that both he and his father are excited about the upcoming season.  He's getting his chance to show that he can play in the NHL before Owen Power comes onto the team and pushes him down the depth chart.  This is a great year for him and I'm excited to see how he plays with a full year in the NHL.

In the long run if he plays well he may get moved in the future because of the depth on Left D but let's not get ahead of ourselves.  Short term he'll be happy to get his chance with the Sabres and with some success who knows maybe he'll be able to play the right side with Owen Power and add some snarl to that D pairing in the longer future.

A lot of buzz on Twitter that Habs  are gunning hard for jack eichel.

    I would hate this

    I absolutely agree with you.

I would hate it on two fronts.  First I don't think the Habs have enough A+ prospects to give back in a trade.  I would be shocked if they would agree to trade Caufield and that's their best piece to trade with us.  Second having to listen to the Canadian media continuously talk in the future about how they stole Eichel for their success.  It would hurt especially for me living in Ontario.  I have to listen to the arrogance about the Leafs and Habs all year long.

The young players currently on the roster and in the short-pipeline that you list offers some hope. But the reality is that it is going to take at least another couple or few years for those players to be at a stage where this roster will be seriously competitive. What has to happen is for this regime to have the courage of its conviction to follow through with their rebuilding plan.

As you well know and have vigorously stated that it is imperative that the goaltending is upgraded so that it can undergird the rebuilding process. There are a number of roster issues that need to be addressed. And that is the most important one.

    I agree with your post.

The goaltending worries me though.  I would like to have Ullmark back as a first priority as a 1A but I would also like to sign another capable proven goaltender for our team as a 1B.  Ullmark has had issues with staying healthy and his overall durability when he starts getting lots of back to back games.  I'm sure that everyone agrees on this point.  Adam's comments from yesterday makes me worry that they are planning to have UPL be the backup which I think would be a huge mistake.  We should plan on having UPL in Rochester as the #1 goalie for the season.

The lack of a roster player able to play this year ideally in Sam's spot is what makes this trade hurt so much.  For example if it had been the Flyers with a 2022 first and Travis Konecny and a prospect I assume most would feel a lot better about what Adams is doing.

    12 minutes ago, Curt said:

Of course.  Only problem with this is that Konecny alone is probably just as valuable as Sam.

Perhaps given that Konecny is signed for a few more years but I believe Reinhart is more talented and better value overall as a player.  It may have been an interesting one for one trade with maybe a 1st or 2nd coming our way with him.

It's hypothetical and not important at this point but my point was getting a roster player back that could play the same role was really important to me.

I've heard the comparisons to Ottawa, that we can be next year's "them".

I mean, ya. Senators had what, 51 in 56 last season? 75 point pace. I believe the Sabres played at a 54 point pace over 82.  Adams looking to unlock a 21 point improvement? Sign me up right now for that! But you gotta spot me your best player from last year, and the d-man who played more minutes than anyone else.

I'm honestly eager to see how Adams pulls off that little switcheroo. I'll happily take that result if the plan for capable vet supplement is on the severe back burner.

We are planning on cutting our experience much more than Ottawa did.  They had and have lots of young prospects and players but they also have a number that have been in their organization for a number of years developing.  Take a look at their roster they have a pretty good mix of young talent and veterans.

I can't think of any team that has cut this deep for a rebuild.  I think that we do need to add a couple of veterans to help stabilize this team.  Center, Right Wing, Right Defense.

The good thing is that we will have the salary cap space to add (hopefully someone useful from a good team) in case next season goes off the rails.

You know, Adams was rumored to want a 1st, prospect, and roster player for Reinhart right? He did basically get that minus the last piece.

    Just a random thought.

  18. We should have cap room.

Riley Sheahan?  Not a priority and I know that his stats were not that great but he did provide some versatility as a 4th line center that could move up and play center or wing on the 3rd line if needed.  I would be happy to see him back again (if he'll sign).

Otherwise I agree with the priority to get a center back in the Eichel trade and ideally a top 6 winger that can step into the lineup.  Let's see.

I’m thinking the Russian kids in particular are going to be heavier than their listed weights already. We may be seeing their 16-year-old weights there.

Good point.  It seems to me that Oskari Laaksonen's stats were off when we drafted him showing him much shorter and lighter than he was at the time of the draft.

  20. It's gotta be hard to come from Russia and go to school in NCAA.  It's hard enough for these guys to transition over to the NHL with the language and culture differences.

That being said it should help him be ready to play with us in Rochester when he makes the jump.

Need to send these guys something to start adding weight and muscle to their frames.  Really skinny kids that we're drafting.  Lots of skill.
