FWIW, I think there are quite a few people here who aren't that impressed with Power either so there is that.  We went into today with the #1 pick a top 4 defenseman, and a 60 point winger.  We left today with a top 4 defenseman, a 5,6,7 defenseman, a winger who won't play for 3-4 years, a small goalie and a future low 1st round choice. It's a little hard to be excited about that.

Not arguing with your assessment on today's moves.  I don't believe fan sentiment has been lower in years, but management is digging deeper.

This trade needs to have a good player coming back.  We got a first round pick and second for Risto.  Not sure but I think Sam is a little bit more of an asset.

Philadelphia is just a dumb team.  KA knew their interest in Risto going back a ways I suspect and exploited it.  Not big time savvy involved there.

Reading this thread I can't help but recall Buffalo selected 1st this year and that story line is being drowned out by this move.  And if the returns are as reported thus far, rightfully so.  No offense to Power, but losing your 2nd best forward is not out-weighed by a talented kid who may remain in the CCHA ranks next season.

Holy smokes if KA could not get a top end prospect for a consistent 60 point producer, who finished the season on a higher pace, and is young, we are done.

    In the division no less.

Friedmann said the Sabres and Panthers have been working on the deal all day.  Could be Lundell and Fla’s 1st next season.

That may be so, but it doesn't remove that a few months ago Sam made it pretty clear he was done in Buffalo.  Two players in one off-season is alarming and three if you include Ristolainen.

It's not just the losing they're tired of.  My belief is their agents have seen how Buffalo operates from an ownership and front office perspective and advised their clients they won't be winning anytime soon.  And, if they want to further their career, better leverage a trade out.

Tearing down a team is not as challenging as building one back up.  Today's trades notwithstanding, it's a tall order for KA or any GM to execute both elements of a rebuild.

Sam is a great player who is only going to get better, but he did NOT want to be here anymore.  Hopefully the return from FL is huge.

Answering the why players with leverage not wanting to be in Buffalo is critical.  Because,  If you ship out players and accede to their demands, eventually you'll be left with little but prospects and journeymen.

Columbus had the same scenario happen today and they keep having to unload elite players.  Little wonder some teams are entrenched in the basement of NHL standings.

This is like the night before Christmas.

It's the night before the jail sentence starts.  Not sure how people can get excited about trading the franchise's best scorer in 15 years.  Besides, he's not the only one who wants out nor will be the only one dealt.  It's nearing or equal to the day Drury and Briere left.

Both Matt Boldy and Marco Rossi would be a helluvalot better than what we’ve heard previously.

Boldy doesn’t get talked up much, but he’s a damn good prospect.

I’d lock him up for 8 years, and bank on him developing more and getting better. I’d throw 6 - 6.5 per at him.

The first 2-3 years would probably be an overpayment.  but after that it should be a fair deal for both sides going forward.

What are the chances a GM would offer sheet Dahlin just to stick it to the Sabres?  Buffalo has a lot going on right now and they'll be cutting payroll this year.

If Buffalo doesn't lock him up long term, I'd wonder if Dahlin isn't enamored with the organization either.  H

Whole lotta assumptions going on in here. Just because they talked, doesn’t mean that KA wants to trade Jack.

Who called whom? Is he calling teams and saying what’ll you give me, or are they calling him and asking what’ll it take to get him? And GMs talk all the time.

I just don’t get why everyone is so eager to get rid of Jack. He’s an unbelievable talent, under a decent contract for 5 more years. Get’m healthy and get him some teammates and start ***** winning. The Sabres need to stop getting rid of their good players.

As the old saying goes..."where there's smoke, there's fire."  The decision to trade at least Eichel was made long ago.

Still agree with the premise that Adams is intent on rebuilding the team, convinced Terry as much, and in that process is giving himself the longest approach to the finish line he can obtain.  That conflicts with fan sentiment which is also tired of the losing and doesn't want to see another 2-3 seasons of poor play before young players begin producing.

Our GM…when GMs are trying to get maximal value for a player, they pump them up in the media. They say stuff like “Jack is an extremely important part of our team. We expect him to be professional and be an indispensable part of our run at the Stanley Cup in 2022.” But, no, we get “We only want players who want to be here.”

But, we’re hearing none of the usual verbiage. We are getting the exact opposite.

I remember the 2011 Bills off-season when their GM went full radio silence.  Similar sentiments then were expressed by the media that nothing was coming out of the front office.  No attempts at subterfuge, talking up players, or anything for insiders to report.  Teams rarely take this approach.

Perhaps Adams has a grand plan that will be unveiled at the right time.  But there are a host of major decisions to be made and they're keeping things very close to the vest.  All I can believe is that they see no benefit to talking about the situation.  Perhaps they're concerned about the fall-out from trading the two best players on the team or the fact that an expansion draft looms.

They're not building much leverage with their assets - at least right now.

And everything he has done has been an abject failure.  Hanging onto Krueger, gutting the scouting department, signing Hall to a ridiculous deal, not addressing the goaltending situation, terrible FA signings. He even payed Taylor Hall to play for the Bruins in the playoffs.

He's got one year of experience as a GM, and that experience is of managing the Sabres to the bottom of the league.

Sure the Pegulas trust him, but they trusted Botterill and Murray, and they fired both those guys after only 3 years in.

Adams has two years to right this ship, and he's about to trade the only consistently productive fowards this team has had the last five years for prospects who haven't even managed to be point-a-game players in the AHL.

You think Pegula is going to be patient watching the Sabres bottom-out the next two seasons waiting for Adams' kids make it to the big leagues?  Eichel and Reinhart didn't save Murray.  Dahlin, Mittelstadt, and Cozens didn't save Botteril.

Adams better figure out a way to win soon, because I doubt Terry has found religion when it comes to patience with his GM.

Terry's best option if Adams doesn't work out would be to name himself GM.  I can't see many decent options outside the organization signing up for the meddling in personnel, reduced front office, and self-imposed financial limitations the Pegula's offer.

Then again, perhaps KA's best course is to begin a rebuild hoping it'll buy him time.  That's a tall order, as you note, when you're trading away your best 2 forwards and the goalie situation is TBD.

I don't think the locker room is all that bad. HCRK was the cancer as far as I could tell. Once he was gone, and Hall sat down, that team looked interested and engaged. The only disappointing thing is we didn't get to see Eichel in that rejuvenated environment. Eichel could return in Granato's attacking offense and thrive. Yes, the kids would all need to learn how to play defense/playoff-style hockey when the time comes. But simply getting a real hockey coach and, and-and-and two NHL-caliber goalies might be enough to see Eichel reach new levels. And drive up his trade value before the NMC next season. Or not trade at all. It's all still possible.

Adams couldn't win with the vets and talent last season, so now it's about identifying the organization's foundation and building from there.

I think Adams didn't want to disrupt much after inheriting Krueger and that roster last off-season.  He even added to it with E. Staal and Hall.  That didn't work, so now that he's selected his HC he wants to put his stamp on the franchise.  After all, he'll be judged on the results because the major negative last season (Krueger) has been removed.

A rebuild is obviously not what long suffering fans want, but it's the reality now.  And that means stripping the roster down to young talent while unloading veterans they can for maximum return.  It also helps to become more cap-healthy.

Its too much. Should be half price for the team they put out there

And, they can still finish lower in the standings next year. 😉

Probably a wise move to keep prices the same, but they know fan sentiment has to be at an all-time low.  And that's going to dive when Eichel and Reinhart are traded.

Amazing to think at one point a waiting list for ST's existed.

Don't really care about the owners either; I care about myself and fellow fans like myself. We want our team to be great and our team to win and anything that gets in the way of that is a negative.

Owners impact the team far more than Jack Eichel ever could.  If you can't see that, I'm sorry.

The question every Sabres fan needs to ask is why does Jack want out?  Because it'd be one thing if he was the lone voice of dissent, but with Reinhart making the same request, something systemic is wrong.  If the Sabres are to move forward, that problem must be addressed.  Without it, the same problems will continue.

This is so overblown. Every hire the Pegulas made prior to KA were met with some degree of applause. They were all on somebody’s list of “next in line.”  Obviously they didn’t work out, maybe TM needed more time. Now, they have decided to follow their vision and time will tell if they are right but players bailing is a relatively new thing. In and era of Michael Jordan, elite athletes aspired to be a part of the solution and will their teams to success. In an era personified by Lebron( but not started by him) it has become acceptable to bail and go where you don’t have to work quite as hard.

Sure, those hires were seen as mainstream.  But when Murray and Botterill didn't work out, going full late Ralph Wilson "need to hire someone I know regardless of qualifications" isn't how you send a message you're trying to win.  That's one more element to the hockey community, players and agents included, that your franchise is not competitive.

If Eichel has done no wrong here then logically we can all bail on the Buffalo Sabres too. We can all pick new teams to root for according to this logic. Yet we would rightfully balk if a fan did that, but we defend players who bail? Why are we held to a higher standard when we’re being loyal to the crest for free? As society’s moral fabric erodes as does our expectations of athletes apparently.

Wrong.  We invest emotion, time and the price of tickets/merchandise into the Sabres.  The players...well, they invest a little more into their career.

I see fans all the time who don't know there's a difference between having a job or having a career.

This is a question that anyone bagging on Jack should ask themselves as the correct answer is very painful to acknowledge: Putting fandom aside if you were a player would you want to play for this organization if you had a choice?

I don't think some can set aside their fandom because it's a big part of their identity.  It's why when even star players like Jack who display anything that goes against the team it becomes a personal attack.

I won't understand it because the Sabres should be entertainment and not who an individual is.  But to be totally objective, if I was an elite player who worked exceptionally hard at my trade and the team struggled through bad coaches, was operated on shoe-string budgets, featured crony GM hires, and ownership was what they are...I'd want out for a chance to win.

After all, I would expect a player to want to win and not be locked in Terry and Kim's hockey hades.

Less talent? Meatballs had a mix of AHL guys and young developing players to work with last year. He should have more talent at his disposal this time around. The results will do the talking.

Hate to break it to you, but it's likely they'll have a lot of 'young developing players' featured prominently in 2021-22.  Those players you hope will improve, but that's a tall order in a very competitive division.

Rebuilding teams largely have to play youth and lower end talent, especially in the NHL where careers are said to be on the decline around 30.  I'm not assuming they'll have more talent next season, particularly when the trades will likely be for more youth and draft picks.

You don't know what you are getting with a McCabe Risto pairing under Granato. Didn't think of that did you?

If this pumping up of DG continues, should we expect a Herb Brooks circa 1980 like effect with the 2021-22 Sabres?  He should be an improvement on Krueger's bullheaded approach, but not the massive force-multiplier some are expecting.  Especially with less talent this coming season.

If they don't deal Risto I'd attribute that to the TP effect of there being the GM in the sky.  Because if he's indifferent on being here, why would Buffalo keep Risto when Jack and Sam also want out?  I thought they only want players who want to be here.

  17. 9 hours ago, Hoss said:

IF we trade away Jack/Sam/Risto and don't return an immediate/placeholder vet 1C then I'd immediately turn to free agency. Throw short-term money at guys like Krejci, Getzlaf, Stastny, Granlund, Danault. I don't believe any of those guys are 1C anymore (some never were) but I'd rather have them log some big, tough minutes while the others get ready. Ideally this player comes in a trade, though.

I have a hard time believing that UFAs with options are interested in signing with a rebuilding team like Buffalo.  KA would need to overpay and I'm not seeing how they want more bad contracts.

I also can't see them wanting veterans coming back unless it's a salary dump.  Because Terry saw what went down with ROR and doesn't want to repeat that experience and look bad again.

Again, you assume that nothing can make Eichel want to be here. Winning fixes a lot if things.

Health is kinda important too.  If he thinks this surgery is the only option to maintaining his career, that'd be enough to drive anyone away.

    18 minutes ago, PASabreFan said:

Sometimes it's not enough to have talent. Pierre was really good. So were a bunch of NYRs in the late 90s.

Talent and depth are essential.  The Edmonton Oilers have proven that now the last few seasons.  It's easier to acquire and/or develop depth...finding the talented top 2 lines and top 2 defensemen is more challenging.

  19. 14 minutes ago, Doohickie said:

The reason it isn't that simple, @PerreaultForever, is that you presume a certain mindset in Eichel.

Perhaps at the time of the presser, that frame of mind was accurate.  But if the Sabres flat out tell Eichel they don't plan to trade him EVER, or if they don't get the return they want, or whatever, what choice does Eichel have?

He *could* choose to sabotage the Sabres and in so doing sabotage his own career, or he could realize that doing so will make him a lot of money but he'll never get the shot he wants at the Stanley Cup while he's in his prime.  He signed a contract with the Sabres; he needs to be prepared to execute that contract with the Sabres

He may feel (and I can't blame him) that up until now the Sabres have not done enough to ice a winning team.  If KA-Granato are finally the people to drag the Sabres out of the cellar, do you really think Eichel will torpedo that?

He might.  But that is just one of many scenarios that could play out if he stays.  If they keep both Eichel and Reinhart and get some goaltending help, I see a likely scenario of the Sabres competing for and earning a playoff spot this year.  I think it's less likely, but if they keep Eich and move Reino it could still pan out, depending on the return for Reino.

If the Sabres get a crappy return for Eichel, that could just as easily doom this team for years to come.

I don't think the Sabres want to be that team known throughout the league as sticking it to a star player.  And I don't think Adams wants the problem on his hands long term, because word gets out (and probably already has) that Buffalo treats players poorly if they choose that option.  Youth movement or not, that makes a rebuild even more difficult.

  20. 1 hour ago, Curt said:

In the big picture, I agree.  In the zoomed in, there have definitely been more than a few moments where he dogged it to the bench for a change or on the back check.  I think that’s true for half the league though.

I've never understood why some fans (not you) are so ready and willing to run a guy out of town like this.  Happened with the Bills years ago too when fans would talk about the elite talent not giving full effort as the team essentially bottomed out.

The question I'd like to ask those upset with his "effort" is...who replaces Jack right now?  Because I don't see a player coming over in a trade that will provide 50% of the scoring he did while healthy.

Trading Jack officially kicks off the rebuild and few are gonna be patient enough for another 1-2 seasons riding the bottom of the standings.
