Every season he’s shown flashes of high end skill, but somehow it just wasn’t translating on the ice.

This season it is translating on the ice.  I can’t see what is different, but it is working for him this year.

He is easy to root for.  It’s been fun to watch.

Because it's mental not physical.  I recall reading about how Donnie G talked to him about his confidence.  He was very confident in practice, but would not take that same level of confidence into games.  He looks like a very confident player on the ice now and seems as if he is creating plays every time he steps on the ice.  From my unskilled eyes, I don't see this as a temporary blip, and he's usually the most entertaining player to watch every game.

Also, He's currently tied for 13th in goals.

I know it is way too early so I won’t list specific names but my ideal 1st round would be a high end centre, scoring winger and a talented RHD.

With Tage emerging and the acquisition of Krebs to go with Mitts an Cozens, centre is no longer a black hole but another high end centre would be great.

You can always use scoring wingers and a high end RHD would help to level out the young back end.

This mock has 7 RHD going in picks 11-25.  With 3 picks in R1, you should get your wish.

From my position, as someone who is watching for the entertainment aspect of the sport, with no experience playing it, he has become the most entertaining player to watch.  It seems almost every shift he is creating a chance for his line.  Relatedly, Cozens is starting to make more noticeable plays, certainly not as often as TT though.

He certainly made himself noticeable last night!  And entertaining. Two 👍👍

This is odd to me because imo Bjork has been crap and although he hasn't lit it up or anything I've seen some decent chemistry between Cozens and Skinner resulting in scoring chances. Not sure what the thinking on this change would be.

He quoted Granato: "Just a different look. Different energy. I thought it was time."  I'm actually interested to see how Skinner does with the move.

Tried to cut and paste it, but couldn't from the Athletic site.

    This.

The only substantive in-game adjustment I can remember that wasn't injury/equipment/special teams related is Caggiula bumping Bjork off the Angry Larry line, and that line has otherwsie only moved because of injury. Cozens has been with his guys since Mitts went down. The Thompson line hasn't juggled a shift that I can recall and the D pairs have been locked since Joker got hurt.

Just a post by Vogl about tomorrow's lines.  Bjork is going with Cozens, and Skinner with the old guys--Girgs and KO.

  7. My big question going forward is whether or not the goal tending will hold up?  1) Will Anderson's age catch up to him in the second half of the season? 2) My observation on Tokarski's lone game was too often it seemed the puck bounced off him into a dangerous situation, and I think a better team capitalizes on those.  I definitely need to see more games from him before deciding.

While I think they will be competitive in most games with their style of play, against better teams and goaltenders, their net-minders will need to be equal to the task.

    • I like the arena. I always seem to agree with people who rail on it as some dump. But it's fine. I didn't see crumbling concrete, missing cup holders or whatever the usual complaints are. It's clean, easy to get into and out of the scoreboard is good enough, the sound, etc. (and the lighting was tremendous; I was seeing names and numbers I never saw before, unless the flaxseed oil is finally kicking in and straightening out my tear film). What more do we want? I can't see putting $400 million into it. I know, things are expensive. Maybe replace the seats? Redo the atrium? Maybe it only took 25 years, but I had a nice fuzzy feeling about the place yesterday. Isn't that the time frame for feeling nostalgic about a building?
    • The Seneca Building (Seneca One?), the modernish skyscraper by the arena skewered in Leino's T-shirt or poster or whatever, was looking handsome with its new brown exterior.
    • I think I might like the new arena host. She interviewed a fan for the trivia contest. He answered a simple, "Where are you from?" with, "Well, that's an interesting question. I'm from Denver, but I used to live in Rochester." She was right there with, "What is this, a podcast?" Lots of laughs in my section.
    • What the heck was with the delay after each shootout attempt?
    • Live band is a great idea. You can imagine how that could be a fantastic feature if the Sabres ever make that thing they used to make a lot, again.
    • Snippets of RJ calls during the intermission were cool. I always used to like the "live" RJ calls after Sabres goals. It wouldn't work quite as well anymore, what with the circus in town and stuff.

I've known her for some time. She's been doing stand-up for about 8 years now--funny as heck!  I was curious how she'd do since her humor is NOT rated P.G....

  9. Someone posted up-thread that it looks like the move to C for Thompson is panning out.  Watching today, I was thinking defensively he's kind of like Edmunds at MLB for the Bills in the sense that he's got such a long reach he is able to disrupt more plays coming up the middle than a shorter player would.

More entertaining hockey today, and it could have easily been another blow out but for AZ's goaltender.

  10. As a casual hockey fan, I enjoyed the brand of hockey the Sabres played under Granato at the end of last season. I watched the Detroit preseason game and saw, again, an entertaining style of hockey being played (compared to how difficult they were to watch under Kreuger). Last night was also fun to watch.  Going forward, if they play with that kind of energy every night, they will keep this fan watching, win or lose.

Good in depth write up about him at https://www.allaboutthejersey.com/2020/4/10/21216310/john-jason-peterka-2020-nhl-draft-prospect-profile-speedy-winger-germany-high-ceiling-question-marks if he is another Michael Grabner as the article suggests it be a good get.

    Interesting description:

    Quote

He is a hare on the smaller side at 5’-11” but not necessarily slight as he’s listed at 192 lbs.

Now the writer does state he is known for his speed, so it could be a descriptive as opposed to an error of homonym proportions. 😎
