After listening to the bs coming out of everyone's mouths in that locker room, it occurs to me that this guys allllll thought even in late March that they would be able to pull this out and make the playoffs. This "come to jesus" moment didn't even happen until after Granato was fired and Adams told them what they are all now saying.

This team needs some adults. Idc what they say or the lip service at the end of the year, they had months on months to fix this and they got mad at fans and acted like they could just flip a switch and make the playoffs. The more I listen to their comments, the more pissed off at the team and organization I become. Completely out of touch with reality of what they were doing and completely leaderless to stand up and say they weren't good enough until it was too late.

It is ridiculous and pathetic that this team thinks Granato being fired is the "wake up call" when MISSING THE F-ING PLAYOFFS FOR 13 STRAIGHT YEARS!!!!!! is the wake up call.

Confirms my impression of Granato and the team which I stated in the main thread about his firing Tuesday:

I liked Granato a lot as a person and enjoyed listening to him on WGR when I could.  I certainly can't judge him on Xs and Os, but just as important, if not more so IMHO, is motivating players. They are pros and supposed to be motivated, but that belies human nature. They rarely looked motivated in the first period (it seems they'd only come to life when they were down or waited until the last period). In fact, the past 2 years, it also looked like the team would wait until the second half (or later) of the season to start playing in a manner showing they wanted to make the playoffs.  To me, that is all on the coaching staff.

These players obviously need external motivation.  You don't necessarily need some guy who is going to crack the whip, as there are different ways to motivate people. But it seemed pretty clear that Granato either didn't think it was necessary or relied on a method that wasn't connecting.

He centered a line with Jeff Skinner who had 24g this season and Skinner scored 0 with Krebs.

You might have the causality wrong here?  Most of Skinner's goals come when he's on a line with two other very good players (like TNT and Tuch).  Who was centering for him when he was in Krueger's doghouse and how many did he score then?

Regardless, my point was I'd like to see Krebs with 2 young, offensively talented, north-south skaters (again) before I give up on him.  Maybe Benson and Savoie (or Kulich)?

  3. I'd like to see Krebs center a line with some offensive talent before tossing him out with the bath water.  I recall he centered for Quinn and JJ in Rochester for a brief stint and did well with them (4 + 11 = 15 in 18 games).  His +/- was terrible then, but he ended this season with +2.

I have Quinn at 28 goals for full season, based on 9 G  in 26 games, though if he scores tonight that is higher. Ya, that could of made a difference.

I don't think the simple projection over an 82 game season gives you an accurate estimate of his potential annual production because he came back from serious injuries, twice this season. Give him a healthy start and year, and I'd say he's a 35-40 goal scorer.

I don't particularly enjoy 'whom' being misused. 'Who' is perfectly acceptable these days in all but the most formal of occasions.

This reminds me of something I purposely do wrong.  When someone asks me how I'm doing, I say "I'm good" because I think saying "I'm well" sounds snobbish.

An anecdote about learning languages and colloquialisms.  My (first) wife was Japanese, and one day she asked me what does "waddaya" mean? It took me a few minutes to realize it was the colloquial version of "what do you".   Kind of like innit.  We certainly can make it rough on those learning English.

  7. Dahlin has more talent, not by a large amount though. Byram is more aggressive in the O zone, but I think Dahlin had to pick his moments, given the poor D they played.  I think we'll start to see a more aggressive Dahlin now as they gain more experience together.

Agree. Like I said above, it’s quickly becoming something, while unlikely, I think they have a real shot at. Though I’ve been on the “still possible” train the whole time. But it was a very long shot and now its merely a long shot. Still a tough road but very possible.

The offense seems to be turning a corner, the team D is better, and UPL is a top 5 goalie in GAA, top 10 in Save%.  Oh, and they just went + on the goal differential. There seems to be a lot of "there" there.

So removing Mitts, Okposo and EJ and replacing them with Byram, Jost and Olofsson has improved the Sabres pace of play.  What we saw last night is similar to what we saw last season.  I think they need to maintain this style and add players like Savoie and Kulich and could really become a team that plays fast. They may need to supplement the roster with some faster bottom 6 players.

    Next year could look like:

    Skinner-TT-Tuch

    JJP-Cozens-Quinn

    Savoie-Krebs-Benson

Greenway + 2  [Bring someone in who can stand up for his teammates without getting his face smashed in.]

    Kulich as the first call-up.

Not my opinion, it's what the numbers say:

The Sabres finished last season 24th in the NHL in defence, allowing 3.35 goals per game

    • In the 1st quarter of this season they were 18th, allowing 3.33
    • In the 2nd quarter of this season they were 25th allowing 3.40
    • In the 3rd quarter of this season they are 1st allowing 2.16

Overall this season they are tied for 12th allowing 2.98

The last time the Sabres finished in the top half of the league in goals against was 2009/10, Ryan Miller's Vezina season. The only time they've been close since was when they finished 16th out of 30 in Bylsma's first year.

What, if anything, should we read into this?

A big part of it is UPL who now ranks in the top 10 in save %, and that 3rd quarter change coincides with his emergence as a legit #1.

Dang.  Where did this come from?  I love it.  In the beginning of the season there were so many posters on here saying to waive or trade UPL to make room for our “definite” 1A Levi.
Some people here were laughing when someone asked who the starter this year was going to be and didn’t automatically anoint Levi as the obvious choice.

    I admit, I was a doubter too.

Not having a legitimate replacement for Ullmark was a mistake .

Not trading Ullmark at the TDL was a mistake

Linus Ullmark said it himself in an interview with Christine Simpson from Sportsnet, that it was time to move on from Buffalo. He mentioned when His Father passed away he was alone in Buffalo( His Family had to stay in Sweden because of COVID) as a result it put Him in a dark place and he said for His Own Mental Wellbeing it was time to move on.

And Granato’s Player Usage at times is proof the analytics department isn’t always listened to.

Speaking of Ullmark, UPL has moved above him in the save % standings and is now in the top 10.

Ha! Pure speculation based on the tense Beane used.  I met this guy last October, and "it was nice getting to know him.  I also like what he brought to the team." [last year]  Perfectly reasonable uses of past tense without meaning he's gone.

Having Kyle Okposo on the first line makes me really sad… This is where we’re at.

I kind of like it. Having tuch on the 3rd line with mittlestadt creates a solid scoring line. KO provides the forechecking of tuch, but not the scoring, which forces TT to pick up the offensive load. 3 solid scoring lines, though the kid line now appears to be #1.

I didn't watch the game but saw the recap this morning so it would be fraudulent of me to act as if I knew what transpired. Based on the recap, it looked like Mitts was on a line with Quinn and Peterka. In one of the goals I saw Mitts make a subtle move and nice pass to Quinn for his score. It seems to me not putting Mitts on a line with scorers is wasting his set-up talents.

Watching the replay this morning, and just before the goal, Cozens got hurt, and Casey came on the ice to get the assist.
