I think in the case of Joki, he should be trained for the PK because he is probably never going to get much PP time.

yeah. Somehow the team had like 11 defensemen last year, and none were particularly good at defense.  I blame botterill.

I would put Dahlin and Joki on the PK and maybe even bring up Borgen who I believe was good at the PK (?)

I mean - the goal is they're available for 5 on 5 where they can have the most ability to tilt the ice in our favor.  It shouldn't be this hard to find defensive defensemen, and defensive forwards.

The Sabres had the second worst rated PK in the league. Why was it so bad? Was the problem more related to the players or design of PK? I'm not making excuses because you are what you do. But this past season with an average to a little higher than average PK and with more consistent goaltending this team lost in the vicinity of eight to ten points in the standings.

Yeah - i think goalie was part of it.  It didn't seem like they had capable forwards or defensemen though.  Risto and McCabe were mediocre.  Scandella was bad.  Bogo was bad.

Sadly, it went to hell when sobotka got hurt... how sad is that?

Well the Sabres used a very passive PK and it was a trainwreck. In addition, their gt had terrible Sv% on the PK.

I feel like they mostly tried to use the 2 d-men to try and limit cross ice passes.  But it felt like if they completed the cross-ice pass it was a goal.  Half the time theyd fake it and it was still a goal from the shortside.

I think the PK was bad for a multitude of reasons. One that I can think of is the inconsistency behind the net (especially with Hutton who had some putrid results at times while other teams were on the PP). If we just start there and address that issue and get more consistent goaltending throughout the season, I feel the PK ranking by that alone will go from 30th to 20th by default.

There was just a run where it seemed like every goal was a PP goal

I think if we could add a 2RW in free agency (toffoli?), We could build a solid team with Monahan.

What about Risto, mitts, and a 2nd (hell for Monahan, I'd send a top 10 protected first instead)

    Lines look something like this:

    Skinner-Eichel-Tofolli

    Oloffson-Monahan-Reinhart

    Johansson-Cozens-Kahun

    Xxx-Lazar-xxx

    Dahlin-Joki

    McCabe-Montour

    Xxx-Miller

Goalie would still be a problem, and I don't know if that would fit under the cap, but that is a good roster (dependant on reasonable players filling the xxx). Those top 3 lines are playoff calibre.

    No okposo love?

This is all helpful insight, @Drag0nDan - and this especially so.

Any other business would be largely the same.  They overspent on a lot to try and fix the team be it, 2 compliance buyouts + the hodgson buyout.  Moulson contract.  Bogo throw-in on the trade.  Okposo deal. Multiple coach/GM firing buyouts.

Trading o'reilly was definitely a cash issue.  They could've probably waited to trade him and got more - but 7.5 mill cash for a guy to not play, when you're most likely forced to bring back salary in return just is a huge dent in the bottom line.  If they were losing 10s of millions as it sounds like, that would have been a tough pill to swallow even before oil prices tanked.

I think vegas and carolina show that having the most scouts doesn't necessarily mean you have the best scouting.  Between the salaries of the people they let go, and travel budgets they're looking at saving several million dollars, and can probably ice a team as good a team as they have had the last couple of years.  Plus a lot of that severance can just hit the 2020 P&L - and they can look to create a profitable healthy organization in 2021 moving forward.  They're also better prepared for a lost season, or a season without fans.

I'm not particularly sold on Adams, but i think they have faith in Krueger.  Maybe fewer cooks in the kitchen will result in a better product.

I stand corrected.  He is largely out of the business and his small holdings will not really impact his status as a billionaire, even if the company ultimately fails in these tough economic times.  Sorry for being old and jaded, but I would be more concerned about the ordinary folks working at his company than for Pegula.

Yeah - the website isn't particularly clear.  But my guess is they lease his land and hes a consultant or something.

Interesting, but it will not affect the Pegula's fortune, no?  If I recall correctly, Pegula made his vast fortune when he sold his company to one of the huge energy (sorry forget which one) conglomerates.  He is out of the business, but it made him very wealthy.

I'm sure he still owns land - and is a partner in some new companies that are likely struggling.  But i also think he didn't like, double down and re-invest in them when the business tanked.  They likely did what all these companies did, paid out bonuses and immediately moved money elsewhere to a more stable/secure spot in the market while anticipating a bankruptcy, and forfeiture of land holdings belonging to those companies.

This is a pretty remarkable overview of how the oil & gas business in the U.S., including fracking, may be in the process of a substantial, if not total, collapse.

    https://nyti.ms/2WcWmXy

Makes sense on the sabres front.  The Bills are profitable every year, and probably spun even more profit in year 1 under beane when they unloaded dead money since it was already paid out on previous year P&Ls.  The Sabres need to be leaner since, oil money is likely not coming in to bail out a non-profitable business - the revenue coming in needs to pay everyone.

I don't think there's a question of their wealth though.  We'll never know for sure, but no wealth management portfolio is going to be supremely tied to oil (be it his businesses or futures).  While he may be a principal owner of fracking wells, he's probably not 100% owner of anything oil related since traditionally its pretty easy to find independent investors for those types of businesses.

There's likely money tied to hedge funds etc. that the plan is traditionally never to touch, and to just pull bits out here and there when needed.  Put urself on the books with a salary for each team, do the same with your businesses - that way whatever you have left is nest-egged for stadium improvements and re-investment.

I mentioned how he might not fit in this goofy organization several times.

He is a Senior Executive, a President or VP.  You can’t just squeeze him under a Rookie GM.  He is not going to come here just because he is old, needs a job, loves Buffalo or played for the team.  Dudley is not like that.  Never has been.

Yeah - i feel like he would want a level of control that he can't get here.  Reporting to adams/krueger probably isn't in the cards.

I agree Perreault.  This is a no-brainer.  They are clueless.  Apparently Kim and Adams, with their combined 9 years of front office experience know more than Dudley with 40 frickin' years.  Kim was 11 and Adams was 5 when Dudley was working in an NHL front office.  WTF?

Why is this guy getting canned every couple of years though?  Is he that hard to work with?

Has he won any cups?  I know TB and Chicago he had acquisitions that helped them win cups, before he was fired.

According to the story in the Athletic

    https://theathletic.com/1909008/2020/07/03/all-the-details-of-the-current-framework-for-the-nhls-new-cba-agreement/?source=user_shared_article

It it will go to the players this week for a vote.  Interestingly absent from the agreement is compliance or amnesty buyouts.  So if the terms are accurate and there is new min salary of $750k and the Cap will not increase for two years, and no team has a compliance buyout, how can it not be more advantageous than ever to have the amount of Cap space the Sabres possess?   Yes, rookie GM and all, but he should be able to force a trade with a desperate team.

Interesting thought.  A fair amount of the space will go to reinhart ullmark montour and oloffson.  I'd be wary on taking on too much bad money (we already have okposo and skinner) or too much term (looming dahlin extension), but i think there's some players out there who will need to get moved.

The times that Reinhart operated below the net this past season saw good results. If the cross ice pass isn't open, get behind the net and let those 2 guys creep into the circles for one timers.

Thats my thought... also the 2nd line PP was a gaping hole anyway so that could probably use somethin different.  Who's camping in front for slot shots though?  Okposo maybe? TBD?

  14. It can work - sort of like a triangle offense, always 2 places to go.  I just wonder if teams will take away that pass to the slot first leaving you with D shots from the circle.

Without a real goal scoring d-man i'm not sure this is super plausible for buffalo.  It also takes the shots from oloffson and eichel on cross ice passes and tries to create opportunities close to the net, where i'm not sure buffalo even has a guy that thrives.

Take this Tweet with a grain-of-salt. Dudley certainly was not let go prior to the Sabres firing (despite it being “in the works”), so who is to know if the shakeup tipped the scales towards him definitely leaving. The question I have is whether the Sabres could have even legally contacted him prior to be let go? Probably not.

I feel like his contract was up though or something along those lines.

As an consultant or Executive VP of Hockey OPs.  Great title that has no meaning and he, TP/KP, KA, and RK can decide on his role together.  I'd suggest his role will be simply to help mentor KA in the job as GM.  Give him some education on the Cap and how to negotiate with other GMs so he isn't taken to the cleaners.

Yeah.  Since the Pegula's don't really know him (well, im sure they've met, but who knows) - it'd have to be like under adams in name at least.

Please hire him.  Please.  Lets give Adams someone to bounce ideas off of.  Please.

What do you hire him as? I don't think they'd make him hockey op's president.  If hired, it'd likely be adams saying he wants him - so the pegulas would want him to report to adams.

Why not, money is money and Tampa can't pay everyone.

    Which ones exactly?

Reinhart at 5/6 years should be between 6 and 7 mil

Olofsson at 3/4 years should be between 3 and 4 mil

Kahun isn't making anything over 2.85mil

Ullmark is good but nowhere near great at this time hence the 3x3mil, if he wants 2x3mil I'd accept that too

Haydn Fleury is the only one I don't have a clue about so I gave him a pay raise for 2 years.

Money is money sure - but this is hands down the worst organization to play for at the moment.  Tampa bay would likely just trade him.

I think reinharts number will be north of 7 if he's giving up UFA years.  Olofsson is kinda in the same boat - will want more than he probably gets slotted.

Why are all the RFA's signing below market deals?

    Botterbotch!

They presented him with the 1-way after he left, too, so it's not like they weren't willing to do it. Just a failure to properly manage negotiations, regardless of how one feels about Pilut.

I don't think he was a star, but he was likely a serviceable defenseman if given time.

If all he asked for was a 1-way contract - the results the same, but you at least get a look at him in camp to see if he can stick before you waive/trade him.

I think the biggest tell here about the value of analytics under Botterill is that “Assistant director of scouting” is a promotion over Director of Analytics.

This looks like Adams following through with fully integrating analytics into scouting, rather than making it a resource that can be used by scouting. It also provides insight into what Adams meant when he said departments weren’t talking and supports @Brawndo’s intel on how they were using the analytics department. Adams’ vision of having a single department ranking all hockey players using innovative technology and data analysis sounds damn progressive and a little exciting, assuming they have the right data collection methods and enough bodies to make it happen.

Superficially, Crowe looks to be an uninspired selection - an interior hire from a mediocre staff. Digging deeper gives me hope that he is a bright, progressive guy who had been going largely unheard in the previous regime, and Kevyn is giving him a canvas to implement some innovative ideas. The most interesting thing in his bio is the fact he was the player personnel architect for some of those great US national development program teams. He looks like a hire similar to Kevyn: a younger positive thinker from outside the established heirarchy.

    Interesting times.

I like the Assistant director of scouting move.  From a business perspective i look at it like, these 2 departments were always under the GM, but they now have to integrate and interact more than in the past.  The analytics piece should help drive conversations on players from a pro personnel standpoint, as well as young players.
