Rocky Balboa was actually a good movie.  I'm pretty sure it did well in the theatres too.  If you want to ridicule a Rocky movie....please choose Rocky V.   I'm still entertained by it, but its a pretty bad movie overall.

Tommy Gunn is by far the worst opponent - rocky is totally washed at that point.  Creed was undefeated, undisputed heavyweight champion and a showman like Ali.  Clubber Lang was basically a knockout machine like Liston.  Drago was a juiced up Russian machine representing the entire USSR.

Rocky V does have those 2 great lines after tommy punches Paulie...  Not sure its enough to redeem a bad forgettable movie though.

Triangle and a rover instead of box.

    Hot take, I know.

I mean so many teams are running different 1-3-1 plays.  And our d would get caught chasing too often - cross ice pass and its an open net.  They'd also occasionally just get it, fake the cross ice pass and fit it in shortside since ullmark struggles there.

So... whatever you can do to kinda prevent open shots from the circles.

Ah, to have a power play unit again like the mid-70’s with the French Connection and Stanfield and Korab at the points.  That unit not only scored a lot, they did it quickly.   Memories.

I don't know how they'll set up the first and second PP units, but i think there will be an even greater boost to the 2nd unit.  Not sure who will play where, but I'm relatively hopeful in improvements from the Mitts/MoJo/sheary group to today.

You have hall+Jack+maybe VO on line 1 PP, line 2 can be skinner+sam+staal/Cozens.  I just want that 2nd group to be able to gain the zone and sustain some pressure.

I'm interested to see who plays on jacks other wing at even strength, but i think they like VO for those cross ice 1 timers.

The team can walk away from the award and the player becomes an UFA doesn't he?

I just read something saying only if its greater than 4.5 mil. But I didn't read the CBA so someone would have to confirm

So Adams gives Thompson 1.4 without ever proving anything in the NHL, but won’t pay a proven but still youth depth scoring forward.  You go KA.  Clearly genius at work.

1.4 for 3 years though. If he's even remotely adequate, years 2/3 can be a huge bargain

Yes. Is this being smart and tough, or is it being Shortsighted and cheap?

Right now, I’d lean to the latter, even though I think this board’s love of Kahun has yet to be earned.

I could never picture Botterill doing this.

What would the estimated arbitration award look like? If they qualify him and can't find an extension, are they bound to that award?

  6. It sounds like KA didn't want to play the arbitration game. The open market contract he gets will probably be less than a possible arbitration award too. He never would've signed the QA, but Kahun might be playing with fire here.

On the plus side if they lose him- They literally used 0 assets to acquire him.

This could really be a thread unto itself. The philosophy of (predominantly) using draft picks as collateral for other moves so you have fewer than 7 per year, vs. stockpiling draft picks so you have as many kicks at the can as possible and average greater than 7 per season. Myself, I tend toward more picks when practical because they can *all* play hockey. It's a matter of which ones rise, which ones can't hack the professional lifestyle, and which get hurt along the way.

It's easier to see in the NFL with compensatory picks also included -- you can take a one-year flier on a resurrect/injured player and then let him walk for a comp. pick there to inflate your numbers.

Yep - everyone said when buffalo traded for diggs that they moved 4 picks.  But in reality they had already added 2 picks in 2020 with the teller trade, and moved 1 of those and 1 of their own.  The pick they moved in 2021 is a 4th, but they moved zay jones for a 5th - so they have the same number of picks.  The lack of minor leagues helps in the NFL too since fringe players can be moved prior to cut day for picks.

I dunno man, maybe everyone was wrong and Quinn will end up the best of the guys there - let's go with that.

FWIW - The Oilers had Quinn high, too. With their stellar drafting record.

The experts have been wrong before.  The projections have been wrong before.

2012 - yakupov and reinhart... woops.

2013 - Lots liked Drouin over Barkov, most had him over lindholm and monahan.

    2014 - Bennett

    2015 - Strome

Because that BPA won't be available when they pick next? BPA doesn't have to mean only when you pick. They may not 'need' the player at that position but still may love what they are or could become and they are rated very highly that they are the best player available at the time they get picked.

I look at it like, a draft board is constructed based on where you value them.  If they have a first round grade on this kid, then they value moving up to secure him rather than just selecting the next highest player on their board.  It makes sense if you especially value him significantly more than the next 5 guys on your board.

Perfetti I question his commitment to all areas of the game.  Skating needs work and he mostly avoids physical play, defense is meh.  He has skills, likes goals and everything else seems like an afterthought for him.

I don't know any of these kids.  I did think it was nice to hear that in the 6 month layoff this kid focused on strength, endurance, and skating.

The misleading part in that d-1 number is where quinn played when he was like 16.  The unconventional development path kinda makes it hard to evaluate with those conventional projection metrics.  They're just about the same age, but quinn has about 2 years of like - serious junior hockey development.

I probably would've taken Rossi too, but I'm not going to lose my mind here.  I think the team has been soft has hell for years, and adding another player who likely isn't going to play with a lot of jam isn't going to help our cause here.  Is the goal to get to the playoffs this year?  Or to get there and actually do something?

  12. 38 minutes ago, Thorny said:

Maybe Quinn doesn't look like a drastic reach from 8, but eliteprospects had his consensus rank at 12, and Perfetti's was 6. That's a big jump. 6 to 12 is a big jump in consensus rankings.

Experts thought Nylander was a better prospect than sergachev, McAvoy, and chychrun. They have made mistakes before.

I just can't take another Nylander or mittelstadt. This kid has good production in ohl, and seems to be a hard worker. Hopefully he has the humility and leadership qualities to succeed. Please be SOMETHING

Frank Seravelli says Fleury plus a 2nd for nothing was offered around the league. No takers.

Limited space to fit that hit under the cap, and limited goalie spots.  I think they're either buying him out, or waiting til the goalie musical chairs game ends and seeing who's left wanting an overpriced goalie.

  14. 5 minutes ago, dudacek said:
    • He has to acquire a Larsson replacement.
    • He should acquire a LD who can kill penalties.
    • He should acquire another top six forward
    • He has indicated he wants to add to our ability to grind
    • He should be at least kicking tires on a goalie
    • He has too many RHDs and a ton of cap space
    • He has five forwards and five defencemen under contract

I think there will be a trade where we take on someone's big salary at a low asset cost, and I think a RHD will be moved out.

So at least 2 deals. But with free agency maybe 4 or 5 moves.

Depending on the meaning of that lower cost mandate, it may be a higher cap hit player who has lower salary requirements.

So after watching a lot of bubble hockey I wanted to compare what the Sabres had this past season to the Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

I listed players by points so far in post season.

Stamkos (when healthy)-  Eichel is the best comparable...can score, has speed and can dominate a game

Kucherov- no one on Sabres is comparable

Point- no one on Sabres is comparable

Hedman- no one on Sabres is comparable

Palat-  maybe Skinner but I actually drop him down to next player because of how physical Palat is

Gourde- Skinner fit this mold best because of his feistiness and ability to get under other teams skin. Gourde gets nod in face offs but Skinner a better scorer

Coleman- Stall fills this role of veteran center man who plays a hard physical game

Shattenkirk-  Risto probably slightly better on offense, but Shattenkirk gets the nod in d zone

Cirelli- no one currently on Sabres, hopefully Cozens fills this role in a couple of years

    Killorn- no one on Sabres

Johnson- this is level where most Sabres forwards fall...Reinhart, Kahun, and Olofsson are all pretty much 50 point guys but don't play a hard game

Sergachev-  Dahlin may be slightly better on offensive side but lacks the physicality that Sergachev plays with in own end

Goodrow- Girgensons  and Lazar type of player, good on PK and likes physical game

McDonagh- McCabe is probably best comparable

Bogo-  didn't we have a Bogo type player earlier in the year??

    Cernack- no one on Sabres

Maroon- Okposo fits build and scoring touch but can't play the physical game that Maroon plays

Verhaeghe- Thompson and Mitts,  good in minors but can't seem to figure it out yet in NHL

Paquette- Larsson is good comparable of defensive responsible, checking line center who can score some goals for you

Schenn and Rutta-  Borgen is in the monirs but best fits this mold

So in summary-  M Johansson, Vesey, and Sheary just don't compare to Kucherov, Point, Killorn on forward lines and Montour and Joker are a long ways away from Hedman

    This team needs HELP!!!!

The Lightning will look a lot different in the near future.  Point will get a 4-5 million dollar raise after next year.  Cirelli gets a big bump.  Sergachev will want a payday too.

They project 5.3 mil in cap space and don't have cirelli or sergachev under contract, and they have 3 defensemen currently.

The only players without NTC/NMC are Hedman (yeah right), Point (keep dreaming), and Killorn (4.5 million on a M-NTC).  So the most you can move out of there is about 4.5 getting them to about 10.  Is that enough to sign cirelli and sergachev?  Maybe? Doesn't fill out the rest of the roster though.

It's also hard to ask the guys who have been underpaid on your team for the last couple years to be the ones to take paycuts.  I think offer sheets are also possible, that or both could be traded.

Here's another way of looking at this:

    Seguin Eichel

    Benn Reinhart

    Radulov Skinner

    Pavelski Staal

    Gurianov Olofsson

    Hintz Cozens

    Faksa (Larsson)

    Comeau (Girgensons)

    Perry Okposo

    Cogliano Kahun

    Kiviranta (Vesey)

    Dickinson Lazar

    Heiskanen Dahlin

    Lindell Ristolainen

    Klingberg Montour

    Oleksiak McCabe

    Sekera Jokiharju

    Hanley/Fedun Miller

    Khudobin Ulmark

Player for player we aren't that far behind a Stanley Cup finalist. Now Dallas isn't great, but they played well at the right time.

Improve the chemistry, grow the youth, make an upgrade or two, we're in the mix.

The difference between good and great in the playoffs is usually a hot goalie, and some secondary scoring.
