  1. Rico introduced himself to my family by simulating a car crash with my father's brand new vehicle. He apparently had the entire bar in on the trick and fooled my father. They became friends at that point. All those legendary stories about him are true. One time, I had my non-hockey-fan roommate home and I took him to a game. Met Rico during the intermission and he was getting all the fans yelling and asking for signatures. He introduced himself as the mayor of Buffalo to my roommate and started talking complete BS politics to him. My roommate was awe struck for 2 weeks that I knew the mayor before I revealed the truth.

Lol where is chz anyways, and what do you know?!?! .. I think some other stories here def top just an encounter at work for me, amazingly I don't have more stories. Anyone here get to skate on the ice at the aud?

I've skated at the aud. I consider Richard martin and family a friend first, sabre legend second. RIP.

on theta note, Rico took me to game 3 of the 99finals. We lost, but I won. He took me to the alumni suite and I shared quite a few drinks with [insert any retired sabre here]. I also shared a barber with lindy Ruff and marcel dion.

  3.

I'm disappointed too--but that disappointment is somewhat mitigated by Laco's shutout across the street, and nearly completely mitigated by the USA win!

I think he was picking on the Sabres PR department--it's someone else who is going on about Miller.

I was picking on the sabres twitter manager.

  4. like clockwork...

not really. pretty sure USA won 5-1. Why are people looking to be negative?

I don't believe I was being negative. The game was great and I'm glad that we won. I'm just disappointed that miller couldn't get his shutout.

  5. Fayetteville, NC has been shut down since Tuesday due to the weather. It's not Atlanta bad because we closed things down Tuesday BEFORE the storm hit. As for the actual storm, we got about an inch of sleet and about 3-5 inches of snow. Not terrible by WNY standards, but when they don't have salt for roads or more than 3 plows, it makes travel very dangerous. I've been cooped up in the house since Tuesday afternoon and I'm going stir crazy. My school system is very conservative with cancellations, so I'm predicting that we won't have school tomorrow either because side roads are still pretty bad. Also, I've sworn off booze for the new year, so its been a LOOOOONG few days!!!

  6. My middle child, Ollie, has recently been assessed as Autistic. We haven't been up to Strong for the official full medical diagnosis, apparently this takes months, but we've recently been approved by the County for 4 extended sessions of in-home therapy per week. Ollie is 2 years, 4 months, and was identified by the Early Intervention folks as having severe cognitive and communication delays, and moderate physical delays. I know some of you here in Sabre Space have special needs kids of your own, so I'm throwing this out there asking for any advice. Either with Autism, or dealing with the various programs designed to help kids with special needs.

Ollie is an awesome kid. I just want as much information as I can get, so I can help him out as much as possible. I'm scared, as any parent would be, I think, but I'm also excited to be able to help him adapt to a world designed for people who interact with it a little differently than he does.

    Thanks.

I am a special education case manager for my school system's preschool department. Based on your child's age and the fact that you mentioned "Early Intervention", it sounds like your child is in the Part C Infant/Toddler Program. Things will begin to move quickly between now and when your kid turns 3, but long story short, your local school system will work with your Part C providers and "transition" her from the Part C program to the Part B program (that's public school special education). I'm at work right now, but I'll try to send you a PM later with much more details. I have plenty of experience as a classroom teacher for children with ASD as well. If you do not hear from me by tonight, send me a PM and that'll trigger my memory!

  7. Must See: Inside Hockey: Pat LaFontaine (extended version) 5:59

Video: Inside Hockey: Pat LaFontaine embraces new gig with Sabres

Pat LaFontaine was once the face of the Buffalo Sabres and now he's the man in charge.

Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman sat down with LaFontaine in his Inside Hockey segment about the former star centre's new role as the Sabres' president of hockey operations.

LaFontaine shared his appreciation for the city of Buffalo, the search for the club's next general manager, and his plans for organization.

Over the past 15 years of changing and sometimes crooked ownership, it is difficult to remember why we are all fans. SHKIII is the reason. To all the younger fans, Knox is like pegula, but an even bigger fan. I believe most of us also bleed bills red, white, and blue; however the bills are a team. The sabres are family. Thank the Knox family for that.

  8. I was a fan in the late 90s for sure, but I was just a kid. I remember staying up listening to games on my headphones in bed as early as 96. I was 13 in 99 when we made our Cup run and that really solidified things for me.

I remember coming back from Florida in 1998, my family had taken a vacation to Disney. We were in the Philadelphia airport when I saw the newspapers that said we had beaten the Flyers in OT to win the series. I remember (being a kid at the time) shouting Go Sabres Flyers stink! in the airport and having my parents tell me to be quiet. :P

I was a freshman in college.

  9. This line here really gets to me:

"Regier went on to say that there is a great deal of healing that needs to be done within the organization."

An organization that was experiencing success with a coach that players, ownership and fans respected. Darcy Regier decided he was the guy who was going to "heal" the Sabres, like some kind of self absorbed messiah. For a guy with no GM history at that time he sure seemed to think pretty highly of himself.

Hindsight is 20/20.. During that time, the team owners were dying/died, Hasek had given up on the coach, coach either slept with hasek's wife and/or muckler's wife, coach was a drunk, new GM entered a situation where it was either the award winning coach or all time goalie to leave, etc. There truly WAS a lot of crap going on back then. The reality is that Muckler should have never been fired and Nolan should have been more mature. Either way, this team has been washed anew. I'm more concerned about whats next than what's in the past. With that said, you really missed some fun, tumultuous times as a fan back in the mid to late 90's!

  10. There is no room for negativity any longer. I am here for my team that has finally been freed from 2 decades of oppression.

    GO SABRES!!!

I really like Rolston. I wish him the best.

Good luck Darcy. My guess is he takes a job in the league offices.

There is no celebration in anyone's misery. There is celebration however for the trust and freedom that has been installed.

I bet you don't remember when he got into a fist fight and smashed the video monitor after the John Leclaire phantom goal. He aint got no friends in the league office.

  11. Kaleta to appeal suspension, Cooke offers to help him change

Wednesday was a busy one in the world of Patrick Kaleta.

First, word broke the Sabres’ agitator would appeal his 10-game suspension for a headshot on Columbus’ Jack Johnson. That news was then followed by an ESPN report claiming Matt Cooke — former public enemy No. 1 when it came to player safety — had reached out and offered assistance in reforming Kaleta’s style of play.

    Yeah. Lots to digest here.

First, the appeal. According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Kaleta has decided to appeal after conferring with his agent and the NHLPA. According to the CBA, the first appeal will be heard by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman — should Bettman uphold the ruling, there is a clause allowing for a second appeal, one that would go through a neutral arbitrator.

Good for him. Not that I support Kaleta's style of play, but if you're going to give Kaleta 10, give the next guy 10 as well. If Kessel gets 3 for swinging a stick, reduce Kaleta to 3.

  12. I'm late to the party here... But I do have some input.

A couple weeks ago, I got it in my head that I'd like to make some homemade eggnog. Rather than splurge on expensive bourbon, I settled on Wild Turkey 101. The final product was great. Eggnog had a lot of full flavor and a lot of whiskey taste. I actually drank the WT neat though. It was a very flull flavored whiskey. I got a hint of leather, spices, and some oaky hints. To be honest, it was a bit rough to swig down due to the 50% ABV, but it was not a bad drink for $22 for a 750ml bottle. It's definitely a hobo drink, but for under $25, you're getting a full flavored, strong drink that won't make you forget!

  13. I got a brand new car and it was in for 4 recalls on Monday. One of the recalls was for the amplifier in the back. That night, I parked the car outside, next morning the rear defroster doesn't work. They had messed that up while fixing hte amplifier. Back to the shop yesterday. Also, my seat was squeaky, so that's been ordered and should be here on Monday or Tuesday. This work is all free to me except for the inconvenience. Therefore, my complaint is with the 2012 VW Jetta TDI. I had an 09 and it was a GREAT car. This 2012 model is essentially the same car with a few upgrades. It drives great, gets great mileage, but its just not the same. They did some cost cutting measures to bring more "frill" features to the car like a killer stereo, speakers, and a longer wheelbase but kept the overall cost the same as older models.

Some differences between the 09 and 12:

    1) gas shocks on trunk and hood are gone. A really minor thing, but a major convenience on my older car.

    2) Independent rear suspension is gone. I have't really noticed this, but it could come into play if i'm going 70 on the highway and have to avoid.

    3) Dashboard is minimal. There's now a digital fuel gauge. There's not even a real fuel gauge, and water gauge is missing too. Again, the little things DO matter. I used to look at the water gauge as much as the speedometer. Lets me know if my car has come up to temperature properly.

    4) Interior plastic molding. It's now just plastic. Used to be that soft faux leather stuff.

    5) Front seat is no longer motorized. Hence the squeaky seat. In place of an actuator motor, there is now a spring that is rubbing the wrong way.

Those are my top 5 complaints. Again, if you're in the market for a new car, go for a 2012. If you want a used car, get an 09 TDI. They hold their values so much better than a gas car, so you'll pay slightly more, but its worth it. VW seemed to have made the decision to strip the Jettas and make people pay a premium for the Passat (~$5k-$10k more) to get the "luxury" features back. Their decision was probably a smart one based on their business model. However, I'll be paying more for the passat next time since they've cheapened a previously really really good car. I just need to get out of grad school first to pay for it!
