We have goal scorers. Looking at our current roster, we will eventually need players to fill in our 3rd/4th line. Are you suggesting these types of players are needed more than a 3/4 defenseman? is Savoie this type of player? I get it Savoie is highly touted and am not suggesting he a bust, but you need to trade quality for quality. No one else in our pipeline would really move the needle for Chychrun and I’m not moving the 2023 1st.

How is a 2023 1st better than Savoie? In terms of your value. If their progress continues the selection could be mid-round.  Plus you are waiting another year for development.  The 2023 could be less skilled and not available to join the team until 2026.

Exactly. We are talking about a league where you need ESPN, TNT, USA, ESPN+, MSG, and NHLN to watch all your teams games.

This is the same for most sports, except the NFL, and it too is rapidly changing the platform which you can view it.  Google/YouTube and Amazon Prime winning bids in the last year.  How will these two companies monetize Thursday Night Football and what was formerly known as The Sunday Ticket remains to be seen.  Local markets lost MLB with the advent of NESN and YES networks, which require a basic cable plan.  The NBA has a minimal number of games on ABC, and reserve most of their prime time events to ESPN and TNT.  World Series and NBA Final is still “free” but for how much longer?

It was @Refuting , but  ya, he might have pulled it out of his "dreams".

The only way the Sabres are involved in a Horvat trade is if they are a third party holding cap for a Toronto or similar cap strapped team.  Adams would not add a player like this unless he would extend, and you don’t extend a center for $9m plus after you just signed Tage.

Question:  Was this Casey Mittelstadt's best game this year?

Not just the goals, but he didn't make me wince once tonight.  Seemed like he kept making the right play.  Is there hope for him?

Probably not. He has had a few highly skilled goals this year and at least one game where he dominated ES.  Last night he had two extremely fortunate goals.  As noted earlier in the thread, the first one was a direct result of the PP but counted as Even Strength(+1). With the exception of the two lucky goals and an 🍎 on KO’s goal (which was nice) it was a below average game, again. He and his line mates were hemmed in most of the night 5v5.  And when they entered the Offensive zone, they could never sustain control.  Not wince  worthy, but SMH.

      And there’s always hope.

Without a doubt a terrible trade. Desperate attempt to make the team tougher, I suppose he felt he had his stars and scorers and needed to fill out the bottom end but ya, overvaluation of Fasching's potential for sure.

maybe getting the picks from Philly for Risto was our Karmic payback and balances it all out now.

Like buying TSLA at $1100. The McNabb piece was most the  difficult and befuddling part of that trade. McNabb was proving himself in the AHL displaying a strong shot from the point, with strength and size (like Muel).  I think he even made an AHL all star appearance.

My uncle who has lived in California for the last 20 years thinks it’s stupid that the Sabres canceled their game today.

The Bills found a way…or whatever.

I moved out of Buffalo in 2019 and am still in NYS. I wanted to jump through the text message and smack him in the face.

I have friends who had to climbed out their windows to shovel out their doors to let their dogs out. Another friend who was living in a tent in their kitchen with no power and just constantly boiling water to stay warm. My family was ok, but my friends grandma lost power for 4 straight days. My grandfather was in the hospital and the nurses on his floor worked 2 shifts staying in a hotel nearby. My friends wife (doctor) was at another hospital for 5 straight days.

I was super annoyed. Thanks for letting me rant.

I’ve been in CA for over 25 years, and I can honestly say you have every right to be annoyed.  I selfishly miss the Sabres too but I could never be so myopic as to not see the effect this storm has had on the community at large.  I spent hours on Christmas Day checking in on friends and family throughout the region. I actually had to change the subject when some inquired how our weather was (it was 83 and sunny).  I was so happy my parents scheduled their trip to visit us early this year, otherwise I would have been worried about them all weekend.

You make two interesting observations. The Cozens's line has two rookies on its wing. So it shouldn't be a surprise that there are going to be instances where this line flashes exciting talent, and then there are going to be instances where it struggles. That's part of the learning process. In this game JJ's playing tine was curtailed. (It was noted on the broadcast.) I'm not bothered by it because we have a good coach who knows when to let them loose and when to pull them back.

You also make a keen observation that Krebs is becoming more confident as a player while staying within the structure of the line. This youngster is playing less of a free-floating game where he constantly tries to force plays. Until he got with the oldsters, Okposo and Girgs, he didn't seem to value the puck. That's not the case now. When the coach first put Krebs with these vets I thought it didn't make sense because it was more of a grinding line. After seeing how Krebs game has changed for the better, it now makes sense. And it demonstrates how good of a coach he is.

I was watching the game in snippets. So it was difficult to make fair judgments on players. But from what I witnessed I thought Mitts played a sharper game than usual. I hope the coach can work his magic with Mitts as he has done with Krebs. Internal improvement is what is going to drive this team upwards.

To the bold, agree.  To the underlined - did he though? I guess we have to determine the baseline.  What I saw was a few blown opportunities for break aways with poor passing, getting outshot and out chanced.  Especially in the high danger areas.  The snippet is from Natural Stat Trick for 5v5 stats.  All Centers for last nights game.  The only positive numbers were from Tage's line.  Shocking right?  While the Cozens line struggled, and to your point had their minutes reduced, they still had a better xGF% than the Mitts line.  I mean he wasn't awful on FL#1 the last three, but Skinners return was noticeable.

Not sure what happened to my post ...

Game 1 they finally beat the Fins after going O for the 1970s.  The fans tore down the goal posts.

Last game ... Fouts throws a 50 yard bomb to win it for San Diego.  The play before that was nearly intercepted.  If the bobler could have held on for the INT the game would have ended and the Bills would have played the Raiders (Oakland) in Buffalo for a trip to the SB.

Proud to be at both games.  My first game ever was Miami.  The Jets game I was on the field in the middle of the pandemonium.

Not quite. Miami would hold the tiebreaker with a better divisional record should they end up tied (Buffalo would have to lose to the Patriots).

And the Patriots have an outside chance to win the division if they win their last five and Buffalo loses their last three.  Both scenarios  are unlikely.  More probable than not that the Pats lose at least 3 of those 5.

  10. Sabres Corsi was 58 v. Pitt. 42 but high danger chances were 14 to 6 in the Pens favor.
Guess we know what drives Moneypuck, as they had the Sabres “Deserved to win” at 33%.  Thought it may have been closer.

Casey had the best Corsi rating EV (75%) on the Sabres but a low xG 36.7%.  Just not getting quality chances.  Cozens for example had an xG of 78%.  Mitts battled down low and actually won a few, which was surprising but the fact he finds himself having to dig out and battle so often is troubling.

Bad start, bad finish.  Some good inbetween.
