I know Greenway has his doubters, but I really like the concept of a Mitts Cozens Greenway 2nd line next year.

I think the doggedness and skill of the first two will elevate the levels of each in Greenway.

I think the size and defence of Greenway will create space for the skill guys and improve the line defensively.

And I think the size/speed/skill mix of the Sabres top 6 overall would be like defending a landslide, especially with Dahlin out with one unit and Power with the other.

I see Tuch Thompson Cozens and Greenway tearing into the opponents like dire wolves with Skinner and Mitts ripping away at the flanks like hyenas.

I want to see Greenway play when 100% healthy.  He missed all of last offseason (camp/preseason and the start of the season) with a bad shoulder.  He reaggravated it again early last season and again when on the Sabres.  I'm very hopeful in seeing a much better player this year.

He would not disrupt the chemistry and would bring in some Cup rings.

He is from Quebec, like Levi. He could be the 23/24 version of Anderson, but able to play more.

I'm all for TPeg filling the plane with French wine and appetizers and getting his derriere to Buffalo.

    I'd sleep better.

Super pumped about the pick, but there's a nagging voice in the back of my head that remembers Grigorenko falling down to us... And the sentiment he was a steal where we got him.

Tell me why the voice is wrong... 🙂

I use tinfoil to keep the bad voices out.

He obviously loved his time in Buffalo to re-sign for less money.

He might spend some time in the press box while Rousek/Savoie/Benson/Kulich get a look.

I still want VO gone. Bring in a vet C who can win a few draws and play on the PK.

Load management for KO and EJ + injuries will give the fringe guys some ice time. Save up some energy for the playoffs.

Be great if the vet C had some decent playoff experience too (and maybe a ring).  D got theirs' now's the time for the forward.

I like the draft a lot. Benson should fit into the emerging top 6 of the future, and may end up being Skinner’s eventual replacement.  I don’t think his size will be too much of an issue as we should still have Cozens, Thompson, and Tuch in the top 6, as well as average sized players in Quinn and JJP who should round it out. (Obviously a number of other prospects will be vying for top 6 minutes in the next few years)

Wahlberg should fit in nicely as a 3 or 4C for us in the future. He’ll bring some size to our bottom six and will have the skill to keep up with the skilled wingers that don’t make the top 6.

Strbak was a great pick, and I see him developing into a solid stay at home Dman, either as a 4 or 5D. It’ll take some time for him to get there though, so we need to add another Dman this offseason.

McCarthy also has a shot at becoming a bottom pairing defenseman for the Sabres, or at least Quality depth. Local kid that probably fits the wanting of on be here bill.

I like the shot at the goalie, he’s got an outside shot at becoming something. Nice to see the goalie pipeline getting stocked back up.

Not much opinion on the rest, but I like what we came away with. Excited for free agency and seeing if we can get some help on defense, but this is a good start to the offseason.

Well said.  So, I will just add "Welcome to the Sabres organization!", to all the young men and good luck in your future.

I would disagree. They need to add some defensive prospects sure but it does not have to be early. It can be but you make it sound as though they must and I don't think you should draft like that. Let's say that Ethan Gauthier slides and is there for you at 39 but you took Quintin Musty at 13th, the best defender on the board is ... idk Cam Allen, if I were Buffalo, I take Gauthier and worry about the rest later on. Defenders tend to slide and they tend to be found later in drafts compared to scoring forwards. Draft your board and unless two players are roughly equal, take the one that is most likely to be the best NHL player.

I will agree and add I am not suggesting they reach for D-men.  All things being equal, it's what I would like to see.

  7. Losing Anderson, KO, Girgs, Hinostroza and as crazy as it sounds VO, leaves Skinner (30) and Lyubushkin (29) as the old, grizzled vets on the team.  I can't see HCDG going for that.  At least 1 of KO/Girgs is going to stay next season IMO.  KO does seem to be trending down but 1 more year won't kill the team.  On the other hand, I can live with Girgs on a moderately overpaid one- or two-year contract.  I'm willing to bet Girgs would go for that.

I agree that talent wise letting both go and replacing them with some of the options mentioned seems like a good idea, but I have to think the locker room leadership has to be taken into consideration.  KO was the captain and Girgs was an alternate.

So, the way I see it is, IF KO wants to stay, Girgs is gone.  If KO knows Girgs will stay and continue as a leader if he retires, I think KO may hang them up.

There is a lot of young players on this team who look up to these 2 guys.

What are you talking about??? Where did I say I wanted to trade away all draft picks and a bunch of players for a 1 yr player? Who are you even referring to?

I've said it a million times, so once more, there is a MIDDLE GROUND. You fill your gaping wide holes by trading a FEW picks or prospects as needed at this point. You don't have to keep acquiring more draft capital forever. You can WIN NOW AND STILL GROW BETTER LONG TERM. It doesn't have to be extreme one way or the other.

The D needs some help NOW.  If a pick(s) is somehow needed to get that done, I have no problem with that.  Between the current number of picks in the next 2 drafts, the available cap money (also in the next 2 years) and VO as a trade piece (which also could restock some picks), GMKA has enough options to get some immediate help AND keep the growth strong.

This seems to be the year to do just that!

  9. Drafting one of the top prospects this year with all the picks they have seem to be a wise move.

Taking one next year lower in the draft will probably need to be done to fill out the pipeline for the moment.  Evaluate the following draft if another one is needed.

I don't have a clue about the quality of the kids at draft time, but just looking at the current prospects I'm guessing they need a forward, 2-Ds and a G with the first 4 picks.  That is if no trades are done.  Is that "reasonable" sounding?  I know a lot depends on who's on the board when they pick, but that would seem to me to be the best result.

Ya think? A couple of 30 something free agents that might win the Cup this year. Carolina will move on from one if not both.

LOL.  I was saying that sarcastically.  I don't like the idea of Levi having to shoulder the burden when UPL/Comrie fail to hold up their end of the bargain.

GMKA can easily upgrade the D in FA.  The forwards don't worry me much at all.  Goaltending is the only concern I have for next year.

Yes, they need another Samuelsson type. Graves fits that skill set.

Well, you guys have convinced me.  Sign Graves and Frederic.  Re-sign Jost.

Trade VO for whatever he gets to fill out the roster or future picks.

I'd use picks and/or lower forward prospect to get a decent D prospect that could be called up this year when needed and hopefully ready for 3rd pairing full time the following season.  It would be nice to have a cost-controlled D-man in 2024-2025.

If the forwards need a player for one more year before some more kids get the nod, I'd consider overpaying Girgs for a one-year deal.  I think he has deserved the chance to skate in a Sabres jersey in the playoffs.  He fills a role and is one of the old-timer leaders.  He would help with the KO transition.

I'm for a vet goalie but I have no idea what GMKA is planning there.

3:1 Sabres advantage in shots and CLB can't get anything established but got a rebound early that hit Levi, Dahlin's skate, and Mitts had his stick lifted before he could get to it...  It's not like the Sabres are getting steamrolled here.

I mean it's their 4th game in 5 nights (3 on the road).  I'll wait to see how they can finish.  Thinking they can go full throttle for 3 periods are just funny.

Sabres can beat these guys in one period.

  13. Last game in what was a fun season.  I'm going to hope for a Kyle Okposo goal tonight!  As for the goalies, my hope would be Levi but if it is either UPL or Comrie I just wonder if that has any future meaning?  VO scoring wouldn't hurt and bringing home a win to get to 91 points would be nice.

Thank you everyone from the Pegula's on down for a good season and hopefully the start of a bright future!

    Go Sabres.

It think once it all shakes out Adams will have effectively traded Olofsson for Greenway, which is exactly what this season showed he needed to do in terms of the composition up front.

Time will tell if he choose the right player to trade and the right player to acquire.

I can see that if you look at cost in cap and picks, but wouldn't you agree Greenway is more of an Okposo replacement?  I will hold out hope that VO can get packaged to get the second pairing D-man they desperately need.

I'm going to think that VO playing style would be replaced with another young guy moving up.

No one is crying and no one has been a bigger critic of Mittlestadt than I have been.  I'm happy that he scored that goal to bring it home for Anderson and the fans at the game, and I'm happy that he and Olofsson increased their trade values tonight.

It seems to me you don't want to trade away 100 points in 2 players this offseason.  Get what you can with VO and lose his $4.75M cap hit but I think you just have to keep Mitts for another year.  His $2.5M hit is peanuts and you just have to see if he can make another big step next year.  IMO.
