You can’t get more retro than the great Don Luce

IMG_0196.thumb.jpeg.a06bc9daf0b02faf885e03cd7565bcce.jpegmore days until the Sabres season starts!!

7th in all time games played  and in points in a Sabres uniform

Along with Craig Ramsey created 2/3rds of the greatest checking line in franchise history

Luce had one hell of a backhand drive to the net.  Lots of shorthanded goals too.

No way to know of course, but my gut says this is the core of it.

They had grand ambitions. All the peripheral stuff beyond the Sabres and Bills were also going to be key components of the family business empire. It was well intentioned hubris, and certainly within the rights of billionaires to pursue. But reality eventually hits billionaires, too.

    (1) Making money in music, hotels, food, and fashion is hard. Barriers to entry are low = outsized profits are hard to come by. Outsized profits are what drives enterprise value. Unless lightning struck, these enterprises were always destined to be sidenotes next to the sports entities work north of $600M and $4B.

    (2) The ambitious, younger of the two owners is no longer the same person due to medical reasons.  The remaining functional owner is 72. He needs to take care of his wife, enjoy his family, and focus on the two sports franchises he owns.

So why does he need PSE anymore?

Now what will happen to the Sabres or Bills is another story entirely and I don't think this announcement leads to anything other than speculation well beyond even my random musings here.

I said pretty much of this in the thread on TBD TSW.  It's financial and time management by keeping 2 of the many PSE ventures.

I would wonder how much he makes by selling off some of the other entities and then getting some investors to help with the hockey rink upgrades.

It seems to me he would get rid of everything else BEFORE the Sabres and Bills.

I was uncomfortable with Pegula not attending RJ Behind the Mic night. Instead, he sent a taped message. I can't imagine not going to RJ night unless it was a crisis.    I know this will get probably me canceled, but it seems to me this says that Kim is permanently out of the picture, whether it's disability, divorce or death. Despite all the blathering about the French Connection, I wouldn't be surprised with the eventual Pegula-less Sabres and/or Bills.

I think you're being a bit dramatic citing a crisis.  His life has been very tough since the Kim incident, and it's pretty well known she has made some progress but it's probably safe to say she can't help him with the businesses anymore.

Thus, the separation of entities which can make thing more focused for him.

  3. Now that UPL knows he is no longer even remotely considered to be the Buffalo Sabres starting goaltender, my hope lies that he can become a serviceable NHL relief netminder.  The pressure is off of you Ukko.  Relax and show us that we were wrong, and you can do this.

    It could happen.  LOL.

I can see that working too.

I continue to be surprised at the number of people who don’t see Jokiharju among this team’s 6 or even 7 defencemen.

Its so unanimous now, I’m starting to 2nd-guess myself, but I don’t see how, if he was (way) ahead of Boosh and Stillman last year, he ends up behind them now?

Joki is the number one RFA D next year that the decision needs to be made on IMO.  My hope is he proves he can anchor the 3rd pairing this season.

If that was the case Mexico and many other countries south of the US should overthrow their government since the cartels and criminals gangs are running those countries.

I was being sarcastic.  Anyone going against Putin is shot, poisoned or thrown from windows.

Can Okposo convince another old buddy in Jonathan Toews to come in on a cheap contract for one year?  $2 milliion

He can center the 4th line and help on the PK.  Still great at face offs winning over 60% of his draws

JT has made well over $100M playing hockey.  If he played another season, it sure wouldn't need to be about the money.

LOL, a signing like that would sure turn some players heads.

IF Okposo were to truly get platooned, am much more on board with this move.  Just don't expect to see that and expect him to play great out of the gate this year (expect this team is already ready for it to be October and will come out of the gate flying like they normally do; the difference being they won't have a November or December with so few W's an old time retired rail worker can count them on 1 hand) and those that are thrilled that Kyle is back will be crowing from every roof, but also expect his to run out of gas sometime in November and he'll be a liability after that.  Hoping that's an overly pessimistic take.  Really like Okposo as a person and like what he's brought to the team in terms of culture change the past 2 seasons.

IF they keep him fresh all year, fine put him back in his role.  But still would've preferred they bring back Girgensons and also bring in a vet 4C PK specialist.  And Kyle didn't get much PK time at all last year; he got some, but not much.  That 4C would be replacing his 5v5 play (Krebs or Jost could easily slide to wing at 5v5 should they be on the 4th line this coming season) but would definitely be upgrading the PK.

KO coming back as the captain is good news to me but as you said his gas tank will need to be monitored.  There had to be some long talks between KO and GMKA/HCDG about his role this season.  I'm speculating here, but it wouldn't surprise me if KO gets a few "mysterious" nagging injuries throughout the season.  It will give him rest and maybe just be the opportunity to bring up some young guys for some looks.

Beside the 4D and goalie, a 4C PK (with some decent playoff experience) has been my hope all offseason.  I have no idea who is still out there in FA (or in a trade) to fill that role, but I'm still hoping that happens.

That group last year brought us to a level that they’ve earned the first right to keep this thing going in a positive direction. And if we have a shift in focus, like I talked about, with greater attention to detail, those are the guys that are going to have to do it

Us fans can debate HCDG and GMKA's approach all we want BUT it's their team and they think they know this is the correct way to do things going forward.  I can't argue too much against it.  I guess this type of "attitude" from the management is why we see Girgs and KO back for one more year.  Maybe even they have hope that VO (who thought he was gone) may put in the D work he desperately needs (and even admits).  Everything is a risk, and it looks they see it differently than some of us.

I can get behind this with the forwards and the D (with the moves made this year) but I admit that it puts a lot of pressure on UPL to not only get his own game under control, but he has to help his partner throughout the season.  I'd feel better if MAF was the man to do that.

Ooh Aah!  Sabres on the Warpath!

  9. I'm starting to think that none of these 9 Ds are getting moved until the start of the season.  It's a hedge against injuries and gives time to see exactly who is playing better.  If everyone is healthy Bryson is the first to get moved.  Joki as part of a trade might happen but if it doesn't, I got no problem with him on the 3rd pairing or #7D.  It will all come down to if they want 7 or 8 D to start the season.  I'm thinking 8 may be the smart move.
