  1. It is being talked about more and more as the season winds down.  How much has his second half scoring pace helped him with his next contract?  I have said since last summer the Sabres should extend him for another three years at a bridge deal of about $4 miilion per year.  This would still make him an RFA and at 25 years old could sign his big contract if he earns it in the next three years.

But recently I have considered some questions about the length.

If the Sabres sign Mittelstat this off season to his entry level deal, do you go shorter term or longer term with Reinhart?

How much will Seattle getting expansion team affect the length of his contract?

Pommer and Moulson big contracts come off books after next season.

Bogo and Scandella have large contracts that expire in 2020.

  2. I would like to see the Sabres bring up Ullmark for some mid week games the rest of the year.  Let him play any Tuesday or Wednesday games and then send him to Rochester for their weekend games.  This gives Botterill a chance to see him play more in NHL and make a better decision this off season.  He has played one great game this year but I want to see more before I would hand him the #1 role next year.

Games Ullmark should start the rest of the year.

    3/7 home against Calgary

    3/15 home against Toronto

    3/21 home against Arizona

    3/29 home against Detroit

    4/4 home against Ottawa

  3. Looking at teams with high salary cap for 2018-19 and potential trade partners or picking up UFA's from team.

Pittsburg, LA, Tampa, Nashville, Chicago, Florida, Minnesota, Anaheim, Calgary, Washington, and Edmonton have cap hits already over 62 million.  Some of them Florida, Nashville, Tampa and LA have rosters that are full and won't need to do much. The others have several spots open and would need to make changes depending on what salary cap goes up to.

    Some ideas-

Pittsburg- Could we somehow trade and get RFA's Sheehan and Rust?  Mentioned this in another post that I think Sheehan will be moved since they have Brassard. I would love to get Rust speed on the Sabres third line.  JBotts familiarity with Rust since he was part of Pittsburg's minor league teams.

Tampa- UFA defenseman Adrej Sustr- 6'7" 27 year old stay at home defenseman would be perfect for third pairing. Coming off a one year contract at 1.9 million.  Would he come to Buffalo for 3 years at $3 million a year.

Anaheim- UFA Antoine Vermette- one year deal to be third line center, take some of the face off pressure off of ROR.

Washington- To me this is the team Buffalo should be looking at.  $62 million in 14 players.

RFA's- Tom Wilson and Phillip Grubauer this summer and Andre Burkovsky next summer.

    UFA John Carlson this summer.

Just like Johansson last year Washington is going to have to give up a quality player this off season to stay under the cap.

Edmonton- RFA's Nurse and Benning. Could we steal one of these defenseman in a trade?

  4. What has hurt this team more over the last five years...

Looking at the drafts since 2013 Buffalo has had some misfortunes in the draft by not winning the lottery, but has also missed on several of the players they have taken.

    2013-

    Rasmus Ristolainen

No real disappointment here as no one else in first round taken after Risto is blowing my socks off.

    2014-

Lose lottery and get second pick instead of first. So we don't get the #1 d we need in Ekblad.

Yes we got Sam Reinhart but passed over other top ten picks Draisaitl (who I was pushing they take) and William Nylander.

Others selected in the first round were Dylan Larkin, Robby Fabric, Kasperi Kapanen, and David Pastrnak.

    2015-

Lose lottery again and don't get McDavid.  Yes I like Eichel but McDavid is better.

We also get Guhle in second round which hopefully turns out to be a great pick.

    2016-

Pick is #8 after finishing almost .500 for the year and take Alexander Nylander.

Several misses on this draft- Mikhail Sergachev is taken with next pick (would have gone higher if he weren't Russian).

Tyson JostCharlie McAvoy, and Kieffer Bellows all taken later in first round before pick 20.

    2017-

Finished 5th worse but dropped to pick #8 because of lottery.

We pick Mittelstadt.  Too early to have any opinions on this draft.

Imagine how this Buffalo team would look if we had Ekblad or Draisaitl instead of Reinhart.

    McDavid instead of Eichel.

Or any of Sergachev, Jost, McCoy or Bellows over Nylander.

  5. Bogosian, has necrotic value.  He has no chance of netting a pure upgrade with even Nylander.

I don't see the value in the Rangers deal.  I'd rather keep O'Reilly over that.

The Okposo deal makes no sense for Arizona, given that while Domi may be traded at the draft, I'm not sure Okposo can net that return.

The Penguins deal makes "some" sense, however I'm not sure you can get Rust included in that deal.  I'm good with getting rid of Larsson, he's proven to be less the player than I personally thought he was.

So nix O'Reilly to Rangers deal and plug him into the Arizona deal and keep Okposo.

O'Reilly for Domi and 2nd rd pick.

Send Beaulieu, Nylander and 2nd to Colorado for Barrie.

    Mittelstadt- Eichel- Okposo

    Domi- Reinhart- Pomminstein

    Wilson- Sheehan- Rust

    Girgensons- ERod- Bailey

    Gulhe- Barrie

    Scandella- Risto

    McCabe- Bogo

  6. Off season moves looking to future...

O'Reilly and Beaulieu to Rangers for Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes.  Rangers will have cap space and get something in return for Zuccarello who becomes UFA after this season.

Bogo and Nylander to Colorado for Barrie.

Larsson and Baptiste to Pittsburg for Sheehan and Rust.  Pittsburg will be up against the cap and get cheaper alternatives. Sheehan becomes expendable because of them getting Brassard.

Okposo to Arizona for Max Domi and 2nd rd 2018 pick.  Okposo helps fill salary space and an experienced scoring winger. Domi coming to Buffalo gives him a fresh start.

Sign Raanta or Grubauer for two years to split time with Ullmark.

    RFA's-

Reinhart gets 3 years 12 million (AAV $4 mil)  -  Still an RFA after this contract expires.

Wilson gets 2 years at 3 million (AAV $1.5 mil).  - Still an RFA after this contract expires.

Domi gets 3 years at 9 million (AAV $3 mil).  - Still an RFA after this contract expires.

Hayes gets 5 years at 25 million (AAV $5 mil)

Sheehan gets 3 years at 9 million (AAV $3 mil)

Rust gets 4 years at 12 million (AAV $3 mil)

    Line up-

    Middlestat- Eichel- Zuccarello

    Domi- Hayes- Reinhart

    Wilson- Sheehan- Rust

    Girgensons- Rodrigues- Pommer

    Guhle- Barrie

    Scandella- Risto

    McCabe- Nelson

    Ullmark

    Raanta or Grubauer

This line up makes the Sabres younger and faster and better on D.

  7. Everyone is looking at Karlsson and Doughty as big name defenseman who are UFA's after next year.

    More off season ideas.

Is there not interest in Ekman-Larsson, Tyson Barrie or John Carlson?

John Carlson is a UFA this summer and not sure Washington can afford. RD who would push Risto back to second pair.

Tyson Barrie has two years remaining on contract and also would push Risto back to 2nd pairing.

Ekman-Larsson has one more year and would be top LD paired with Risto and push Scandella back to second pairing.

I believe JBotts should either go after Carlson in free agency or get Barrie from Colorado.

Trade #1- Bogo, Larsson and a second round pick to Colorado for Barrie?

Sign Tavares to 10-11 million to team back up with Okposo.

Trade #2 ROR to San Jose for Hertl and 2nd rd pick.

    Trade

Baptiste, Beaulieu, and 3rd for Max Domi from Arizona.

    New Look Sabres for 18-19

    Hertle- Tavares- Okposo

    Domi- Eichel- Reinhart

    Middlestat- Rodrigues- Pomminstein

    Wilson- Girgensons- Bailey

    Scandella- Barrie

    Guhle- Risto

    McCabe- Nelson

    Ullmark

    UFA

  8. I think it is safe to say Ullmark will be with the Sabres next year.  I look for Buffalo to move on from Lehner and Johnson and look for another veteran who has played number #1 minutes.  So who is the best fit to join Sabres.

    Options-

RFA- Mrazek will not resign with Flyers since they have Elliott and Neuvirth signed for next year.

RFA- Grubauer- think he would be a good tandem with Ullmark

UFA- Hutton- Would give him two year contract at $3 million a year

    UFA- Raanta- 2 years $2milllion a year

UFA- Kuemper- 2 years $2 million a year

UFA- Dell- 2 years at $1.5 million a year

Hutton has played with Coach Housley in Nashville but he is the oldest of the group.

I think Grubauer, Kueper, then Raanta would be my first choices.

  9. Couple more options I have been looking at...

Trade #1- Larsson, Baptiste, Tennyson and 2019 3rd pick to Ottawa for Hoffman, Cici.

Buffalo gets a sniper to replace Kane, Cici gives them a young stable RD for second or third pairing.

Ottawa removes cap space in removing Hoffman.

Trade #2- Lehner, Nylander to NYI for Halak and Keifer Bellows.

    Swap of goalies and prospects.

Trade #3- Kane to St Louis for Jordan Kyrou and 2018 2nd rd, and 2019 conditional (1st if they make conference finals or Kane resigns in St Louis)

St Louis gets their sniper and Sabres get prospect and picks.

Trade #4- ROR and Bogo to San Jose for Tomas Hertl, Timo Meir and Brenden Dillon.

San Jose gets long term center to fill Thorton's spot and we get younger and more D help.

    Next years lineup

    Hoffman- Eichel- Okapis

    Meir- Hertl- Reinhart

    Girgensons- Rodrigues- Pommer

    CJ Smith, Malone, Bailey

    Scandella- Risto

    Guhle- Cici

    Dillion- McCabe

    Ullmark

These trades gives us prospects of Bellows and Kyrou to join Middlestat in Rochester next year.

  10. Trade ideas looking to next year.  Some before the deadline and some during the off season.

Still like Kane, and D (either Gorges, Tennyson, or Beaulieu) to Anaheim for Montour, 2018 3rd rd pick, and 2019 conditional pick, (first if Anaheim reaches conference finals or they resign Kane, if neither of those happen then it is a 2nd rd 2019 pick.)

Lehner- somewhere for a 3rd rd pick.

Reinhart and 2018 3rd rd pick to Ottawa for Hoffman.

ROR to San Jose for Couture.

    Next years lineup-

    Couture- Eichel- Okposo

    Hoffman- Middlestat- Pomminstein

    Pu- Grisgensons- Fasching

    Larsson- Rodrigues- Bailey

    Scandella- Risto

    Guhle- Montour

    McCabe- Bogosian

    Ulmark

    xxxxx

  11. Everybody is looking at SanJose to add Kane.  What if we offered ROR and Reinhart for Couture and Labanc.

It would be an exchange of a veteran and young players for each team.  SanJose actually gets a player to replace Thornton that they can build around the next five years. Buffalo rids a high salary and can make Jack the true number 1.  Makes way for Middlestat next year to come in as #2 center.

Larsson goes to Pitt for Hagelin.  Gets Pitt a #3 center, salary dump of Hagelin.

Kane and Beaulieu to Anaheim for Silfverberg, Montour and 2018 3rd rd pick.  Willing to take less because we get solid young D in Montour.

  12. Trades that make sense for both teams involved.

Hartman more physical and faster than Reinhart, Reinhart better playmaker

Edmonton needs goalie- Baptiste played with McDavid in Erie- Antipin may be better fit in Edmonton and replaces Nurse in lineup( I even give Edmonton a 2nd rd pick if needed to complete trade)

Nurse big physical d that Buffalo needs

Okposo is incentive to get JT to stay on Island- Bailey UFA after this season, loss of Okposo's contract allows us to extend Kane

  13. Although on paper the Scandella and Pomminstein for Foligno and Ennis trade looked good for the Sabres we lost a lot in Foligno.  He may have not had the statistics but he always seemed to come to play.

DesLaruiers was a used to pic up depth on defense, how is that working out?

This club has too many paycheck collectors and not enough workers!!

Larsson, Moulson, Girgesnons, Reinhart, ROR, Okposo all skate around and expect things to happen for them without working hard!!1

At least Eicehl, Kane, and Risto show some passion and have made mistakes this year trying to do too much!!

Trades need to be made before Christmas.

  14. So considering Arizona is going nowhere over the next couple of years and OEL can leave for nothing as a UFA if the return is good enough then I think Arizona GM listens.

I'd be willing to give up Reinhart (#2 overall pick), Nylander, Larsson, Moulson, (Fedun or Tennyson), and conditional pick for OEL and Perlini.

  15. Yeah not even close. Getting OEL is probably Risto + Reinhart +

No way you don't have to include Risto.  Risto is signed to a good AAV contract while OEL becomes a free agent after 18/19 year.

Imagine a top five D  of Risto, OEL, Scandella, Bogo, and McCabe!!! And all five salaries are only 21.6 mil for next year. Add Guhle to the mix and I think that is a solid D.

I'd even make the pick a conditional pick and make it a first rounder in 2019 if OEL signs an extension and give them Tennyson.

  16. Trading cost controlled assets for Duchene is bad.

You now in another thread, want to trade Reinhart, McCabe and stuff. So you want to trade an NHL forward who's cost controlled, scored more than Duchene last season, and is almost 5 years younger, plus additional things for Duchene. Terrible terrible trade idea.

The initial thread was made before preseason games. I said Nylander hoping to hold onto Reinhart.  After watching Reinhart ( I know it was preseason) at center I am still not impressed and would rather have Duchene for the next five years. Hence why I upped and gave up Reinhart and kept Nylander.

  17.  Option1-

    Kane- Eichel-Griffith

    Girgensons- ROR- Okposo

    Pouliot-Reinhart- Pomminstein

    Moulson-Josefson-Larsson

Still would love to see a trade of Reinhart, Moulson, and McCabe to Colorado for Duchene

     Option2-

    Duchene- Eichel- Okposo

    Kane- ROR- Pomminstein

    Pouliot- Girgensons- Griffith

    Nolan- Josefson- Larsson

  18. My proposal is Nylander, McCabe, and Moulson and conditional pick for Duchene.

Why this works for both teams.

    For Colorado-

Nylander gives them a young forward prospect.

MCabe gives the a proven young defenseman.

Mouslon fills the LW void by the loss of Duchene, and also someone they can use on the PP.

Conditional pick is determined by whether we can extend Duchene.

    For Buffalo-

Can risk losing Nylander with having prospects like Bailey, Baptiste, Fasching, and Middlestat.

McCabe is steady, but Buffalo picked up Beaulieuo fill that void.

Moulson contract comes off cap and gives ability to sign either Kane, Duchene, or both.
