Or he could stay in Russia and be a KHL star. He'll make more on his deal there then on an entry level here. Let's see what we learn about him at the combine.

I guess you really never know.  It will depend on how Sabres (and other teams) feel about him after interviews and all their background work.

Are there examples of truly high end players, top-10 draft picks who have decided to just stay in Russia?  I think it’s very uncommon.  I might have do some digging on this.

Keep in mind Pod is signed to a khl deal through 2021

Let him stay in Russia for 2 years.  He will come over at age 20, NHL ready.

I wouldn’t really worry about the “Russian Factor”, this guy could be an NHL star.

I think he is just an adviser at this time, probably going to get an official job once they get to the expansion draft.

He may be itching to get back in the saddle now, if the right deal is offered.

Perhaps, it’s worth an ask, but I think he is committed there.  It has got to be appealing for a coach to be able to advise on the building of his team from scratch.

I would imagine Jbot said that he was going to talk to other candidates and would get back to McClellan. McClellan, with an offer on the table from LA already may not want to wait and instead will take the sure thing and sign with LA. Smart from both men’s point of view.

Key phrase.  We create lots of stories in our heads to fill in all the information that we don't know.

This is all very true.  But it's so much easier said 'draft well' than actually doing.  I'm sure XGMTM thought Nylander was going to be a better player than he is.  I'm sure he was hoping one of our million 2nd rounders during that time would work out.  The issue is drafting is not an exact science.  Several players will not live up to their draft spot (including the guys being mentioned for 7th overall).  So the alternative is not having the big upside but you've traded that pick for an established player who you know much more about.

I see you cherry picked Kutcherov with the 26th pick.  Sure.  But who went 25th?  Who went 27th?  It's easy to say draft well but it's so much more difficult to know how a 17/18 year old kid will develop.

You can say the same thing about making trades.  Its easier to say "make a good trade" than to actually do that.  You can screw up a trade just as easily as you can screw up a draft pick.

  6. The issue here is that Buffalo does not have enough organizational depth right now.  Mostly because they drafted pretty terribly from like 2005 to 2015.  For Buffalo to be a quality team, that organizational depth needs to be improved.

There are multiple ways to build this up.  The most common and sustainable way, is to draft well.  It can also be done through shrewd trades/fleecing other teams in trades.  It can also be supplemented by finding overseas (Pilut) or college (Rodrigues) FA gems.  The best teams do a combination that involves all of these.

So, Buffalo can trade #7 or draft at #7, but they better fleece someone in the trade or hit on the draft pick, otherwise things aren't going to get any better.

Based on Buffalo's current status of, definitely not a contender, I would try to draft a good player.

Speed and IQ... I would guess that is Zegras or Turcotte. You could also toss Boldy in the mix although I would say his speed is not super high.

If those two are gone, don't sleep on Krebs.  I think I like him more than most.  He has skating, speed, playmaking, can play C or W, solid 2-way game, universally acknowledged leadership qualities, just named captain of the Canadian U18 team.  His junior team was very bad, so I don't think he gets the attention he deserves.

That right there, is a no for me. If you can't skate and aren't offensively doing things, I just don't have a spot for you. From what little I have seen of Vlasic, I think his skating is ok but he looks lumbering out there, not a lot of agility and that concerns me.

Ville Heinola is a guy on defense I might consider with that second first. That said, I think with defense being shallow in this draft we will see some reaches. This might help some forwards slide for that pick at 26.

I agree with these two thoughts.

You need need need to be able to skate well.  Its just as important for the D as it is for the F's.  Even a big defensive D with limited offensive upside needs to be at least an average skater to have a chance of being a top-4 D.

In Botterill's 2 drafts, he has taken 7 D and only 4 F's.  This is a good year for F's and I'd like to see Buffalo go forward-forward with these two 1st rounders.  That being said, you have to wait and see who is there when your turn is up.

If McCellean was his guy.... a decision that should have been made a while ago - for instance, media reports that he had already contacted Quenneville earlier in the year - than that contract should have been offered immediately after Housley was fired.  Because the parameters would have already been discussed.... and he should have already known if he was on board.

Look, he visited with the Sabres DURING this week right? Even during his son’s tournament. He just needed to put a pen to paper. *If* he was the guy. Botterill could still give him the week off ?

Look, I’m not upset. I’m not even a fan of McLellan. However, if McClellan is Botterill’s guy.... this is NOT a good look.

However, Botterill is very discreet. So I wouldn’t be so sure that he is....and that it’s more likely he’s waiting for a team to get knocked out. If that’s the case, I’m fine with it all.

We’ll find it either way... by his hire.

But if he’s ONLY still at a point in his process where he’s vetting candidates..... that’s very disconcerting.

I think that you have unrealistic expectations for how quickly a head coach hiring process should play out.

  10. 5 minutes ago, Die Hard said:

Have you noticed Botterill’s MO to slow play things? Even thought he had extensive knowledge of the team before he arrived.... he decided to waste an entire 1st season to assess the roster.

Then despite his door-slamming fit mid-season.... he didn’t make any immediate changes and waited until the off-season. And waited until the last second before getting minimal returns for ROR. And Kane for that matter, at the trade deadline.

And despite losing Berglund mid-season and the team needs some infusion into the roster.... stood pat and let the team decline.

It was 2 months ago that he was talking about how he was happy with Housley and how the season progressed.... and then he looks like a fool for having to fire him — which I was all onboard with BTW.

I dunno.... I’m just not inclined to give Botterill the benefit of the doubt here.

Botterill has the Pegula’s money here. He can pay a top salary, offer a good young foundation, and salary cap space. JBots.... just go and get your guy already.

Ok, and what do you do if your guy says that he wants to take this week with his family, which should be all about his son, go home and then make a decision?  Throw an extra $2M at him and tell him you need a decision in the next 12 hours?

Buffalo was extremely slow in its most recent GM and HC searches (Botterill, Housley). I get that.... both were new and kind of represented an organizational re-structure.

But Botterill has already interviewed numerous of candidates before he hired Housley... and by all accounts, he made up his mind to fire Housley after a string of shutout losses in early March. So why wouldn’t he have already been working behind the scenes long ago.... or at worst, had an extremely short-list. To the point where it’s just about dollars/terms.

Other teams are able to dump coaches and hire within hours (or the next day). So what the hell is the hang up here?

Unless he’s waiting for the playoffs to unfold. That’s the only thing that makes sense.

Surely they aren’t setting themselves up for another Babcock unfolding.

They fired Housley 4 days ago.  The reason Florida hired Quenville so fast is because Talon and Q already have an extensive relationship from working together at GM/coach in the past.

Once again, it's been 4 days.  It's ok.

Does that apply to signing bonuses?  ROR's contract is $1M per year salary, the rest is all signing bonus (the $7M one-time payment JBot avoided by moving him before July 1 was the signing bonus).  The advantage to the player is that you get your money for the season up front.  Also, if a player gets docked pay for suspension, I'm pretty sure that gets paid based on salary but not bonuses.

I believe that it does apply to signing bonuses as well as salary.

Agreed.  It’s also crazy if 5 year deals for coaches is the standard.  Sure it happens but what percentage of coaches make it a full five years.  I doubt it’s even 50/50.  Coaches should get 3 years max.  But as we’ve said, there’s no salary cap on coaches and it’s pegula bucks so here we are.

For coaches with experience and a good track record, I think 5 is more normal.  Inexperienced coaches usually get less I think.  Wasn’t Housley on a 3 year contract?

Your pay is $4. m versus $5m per year?

Do do you really care about “ cost of living” and state tax differences between NY and California?

The decision will be based on where he wants to live and who he wants to work for.   The financials don’t matter at these levels.

You really think that salary is not a major issue for NHL coaches when making decisions about taking a job?  I can't imagine that is true in the majority of cases.

So just got some info on him, kid grew up in Pound Ridge NY, went to Foxlane middle school til 7th grade than to Avon for hockey. This is where my kids go.  Younger brother is 10th grade wrestler and quite a bit bigger.  Zegras has mad skills according to Foxlane middle school front desk guy and fellow beer leaguer and has room to grow.  Might be a nice ad for Sabres

Nice information, that's fun.  These guys who are the top possibilities at #7 really all have mad skills.  I wouldn't be upset if the pick was Zegras.  I think I like a couple others more, but Zegras has the potential to be a pretty dynamic offensive player.

You can structure the payout of money this way, however the Cap Hit over the every year of the deal will be 7.5m AAV

You can vary the actual salary year to year, but there is a limit in how much it can vary.  Without looking it up, I think its 25% or something.  You are correct that the cap hit would be the same each year even if the salary is not, but contracts with very extreme differences in salary, like the one above, are no longer allowed under the current CBA.

Who said that?  I've his skating described as powerful yet graceful.

I would say his skating IS powerful yet graceful.  He is a strong guy and his edges/agility are good.  He has worked on his skating stride to improve his acceleration/quickness, but it could still get better, and also his top end speed is probably average.  So overall I would say his skating is good, but not great.
