  1. RJ Day!!! The old man gets his just reward for 51 years of exemplary service to the whole Buffalo & Hockey Community. I couldn't be happier for him. He'll be missed and we'll be able to send him our Goodbyes. Plus a game with a full house. 1st time for that in what seems like forever. Hopefully the team plays up to it's recent standards and the crowd gets into it. It'll be great for the young guys on this team to feel the power of a full house screaming for them.

    LETS GO BUFFALO!!!

This season is absolutely not a tank season.  Next season will not be a tank season.  Using such a broad definition of tanking, that would mean 5-10 NHL teams are tanking every single season.

They are just building for the future and aren’t that good (yet!).

I don’t understand. Like the one we did to get Eichel? I swear, the Buffalo fan is so shell shocked that if we’re not loading up on high-priced players for a Cup run, we must be tanking. Do you think we are playing to tank right now or that our current young roster won’t take another step forward next year?

Sorry, I forgot how toxic the word tank is around here. Having said that, 2 rookies are assured spots next year, Quinn and Power. Are they going to be Makar and Jason Robertson like and burst out almost immediately or are they going to be more like Cozens and Dahlin and need some time to acclimate to the league, good players but not star like immediately.

IMO if you add anymore rookies to the mix you're making next year another development year which could backfire if UPL doesn't improve and Anderson's age  finally catches up with him. Adding JJP as a call up and having Bryson/Fitzgerald as your 7-8th defensemen, they're still going to get PT with the big club when injuries as they always do occur.

This year we should know who is definitely in our core group plus add Power & Quinn. Next year get rid of all the JAGs plus you'll have a boatload of Cap space available not to blow it but if played smartly you can add 3-4 vets to the lineup that'll help you take another step in getting to the playoffs. Someone in the top 8 of the Eastern Conference is going to have to finally regress for us to get in IMO but adding 3 rookies, our present GK roster, we're just not going to improve much point wise and do we really want to go another year when 80 points will seem like light years away. I'm tired of the horrible play we've seen recently, the renewed culture that appears to be brewing and the improved play had me hooked on the hopium and I'd rather see another step in the right direction instead of hoping JAGS and an old man in GK is going to save us. Don't be blinded by the 14 game improvement although thank goodness we're finally healthy, we still have a ways to go. Our depth still is not where it needs to be.

    Just to clarify:

    Under contract:

    • Tage
    • Mitts
    • Cozens
    • Skinner
    • Tuch
    • VO
    • Asplund
    • Okposo
    • Girgs
    • Krebs
    • Bjork

    UFA:

    • Eakin
    • Hinostroza
    • Hayden
    • Caggiula

So there are technically NHL 4 spots open next year, 5 if you are like me and think Bjork is vulnerable.

Peterka would rank behind Quinn and ahead of R2 and Murray in the race for those spots. Of course his position will change based on what other moves they make, but right now he is on the team.

I guess with @Thorny MIA, l’ll take up his spot. It appears to me with us becoming a defense star team (Power, Dahlin), and a forward most likely not going to become an 80+ point scorer, it will be imperative for us to have 4 forward lines that can score. We need to add guys who can provide us points on the 3rd and 4th lines, can add some grit and speed to the lineup. Okposo and Girgs won’t be here 2-3 years down the line so there will always be spots open, don’t rush guys until they’re fully ready to take over.

    Burakovsky isn't it

20 goals once and never topped 29 assists on stacked teams. No thanks.

Big, fast, won’t cost major bucks and scoring on the upswing last few seasons and won a cup with Washington so he has playoff experience.
Nichuskin will cost less than Bsky so from what l’ve read he’s most likely to be resigned by the Avs.

Right. But I didn't comment on that.

I quoted Crusader about my man JJP.

He's going to change opinions quickly around here imo

Hiney gets replaced by Quinn, JJP I believe plays the left side. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think he can step in and be an improvement over what we presently have and/or adding someone who is established already such as Burakovsky.

I think he was referring to the story that GMKA will welcome Andreson back next season if he choses chooses to play.

FIFY, it's a Crebs, Dhalin thing for me, sorry if it offends but otherwise you are 100% correct.

You are not alone. I too believe in JJ and think he belongs in the NHL next season.

If you add 3 rookies and keep Anderson/UPL as your GKs, prepare for another tank year. They may be good 2-3 years down the line but rookies make errors that you need vets to overcome. We aren't defensibly responsible yet and those GKs aren't good enough to save us (pun intended). Fitz or Bryson we could live with, both of them are a problem IMO.

as arbitrary as this sort of thing is (or maybe not, if you have data, i guess), i feel like consistently average NHL goaltending would have yielded this team a bit more than 12 points - maybe closer to 20?

The GK issue was just one of the problems, fact is with all the injuries and missed games by both our forward and backline, I don't think a GK would have made much of a difference. Now with most healthy and playing better, it might have but that wasn't the case earlier in the season.

Yeah, I’m not sure where the Casey bashing is coming from.

Definitely among our most effective forwards last night. His tracking in the O-zone and the backcheck was excellent, as was his puckhandling in the O-zone. He was hard on the puck on offence and defence. 🤷

I can't agree with the both of you more. I thought he may have been our best forward discounting Girgensons 2 goals. He's been playing well for about a month now so it isn't just a 1 game thing either. In the 1st period I believe someone ( @Brawndo ??) posted that while he was on the ice the shots were 10-0 in our favor. His Corsi for the game was thru the roof also.

As for the PP, they had 4 SOG in the OT, their GK stole that game from us.

if you do both you are blocking Fitz and Bryson.

I like 1 but I don't like selling assets to get a guy like Myers and the cost for the other 2 may be pretty high.

I feel like im on an island in saying JJ needs to be in the NHL. he has nothing more to prove or learn the the AHL.

oh and I like points 2 and 4!

As to the bolded, all 3 of those teams will be in CAP hell next year, so although it will cost us some (primarily assets), it won't be astronomical.

  10. 4 minutes ago, Crusader1969 said:

yes , he needs to be in the NHL next year.

im assuming you are doing 3 if you can't complete 1?

I'd let JJP stay in Rochester and use him as a call up

No I would do both. Fitzgerald and Bryson show flashes but I'm not sure they're ready for the big time if you truly want to push for a playoff spot next year. We'll have plenty of spare cash to sign/get 4 of those parts without worrying about the Cap. Afterwards you have Okposo's and Girgensons contracts coming off the books or at a lower level and you add a couple of kids and your not in CAP hell afterward either if KA plays it smart.

As you probably know already, I am not a fan of hopium generated by tanking, near JAGs like Pysyk or signing aging vets to long-term deals.

I am a fan of teams improving incrementally, or draft and develop and using our cap space to fill holes in our roster like goaltending and an accomplished RHD to pair with Power.

I didn't mean to imply you did on most of those but you have to admit, you're on Pysyk staying in several of your past posts.

In Friedman’s 32 Thoughts he says Sabres have informed Anderson they want him back next season. As a 3rd goalie sure but if the idea is a UPL-Anderson tandem then yikes.

If true he has to be a #2.

    1. Sign a RHD UFA: Manson or Gudbranson, neither will cost much even as an overpayment
    2. Get a #1 GK or sign Husso as an UFA, I don't think Anderson comes back, age and family commitments
    3. Trade for Theodore, Dumba or Myers or a similar vet RHD
    4. Sign Burakovsky UFA from Colorado, he won't be 28 until the end of the season, big, fast and can score

    Lineup: Skinner-Thompson-Tuch           Burakovsky-Mitts-Olofsson         Krebs-Cozens-Quinn     Girgensons-Asplund-Okposo

    Dahlin-RHD Trade       Power-RHD UFA     Samuelsson-Joker     Bryson/Fitzgerald 7/8

Who doesn’t love a good dose of Hopium?

Unless you're hallucinating things from it like Pysyk being an answer at RHD or a tank is going to save us or trading all your draft assets for vets who don't work out. Otherwise it's all good.

  14. Well since game #42 they are a 11-12-4 which is 2 games before this thread started. Which of course has been punctuated by a 6 game losing streak and a 6-1-3 in their last 10 games. What we've learned since this started is that we still need an influx of GKing, a couple of forwards and 1 or 2 veteran RHDs. The young guys have been playing much better and they have seem to have finally become healthy enough to evaluate everyone going forward. Things have without a doubt been improving since the 6 game losing streak with a 8-3-3 record. Schedule doesn't get easier in the upcoming games, so we'll see how things turn out and how optimistic we should become for next season.

The play of Mitts/VO/Aspy hasn’t been getting enough attention over the recent run.

With the front line showing some inconsistency, it has more than compensated.

One of the best things about this current forward lineup is that I actually don’t have to check out or just hang on when certain lines come over the boards. They all have players who can make plays.

It’s been a long, long time since I’ve felt that way.

Interesting Stats this month (March): Forward Line Totals

    1. Tuch-Skinner-Thompson      27 points led by Tage's 11, 15 goals led by Skinner's 7, TOI 17:24 led by Tage 18:10
    2. Krebs-Cozens-Hinostroza.   17 points, Cozens/Hinostroza tied with 6, 6 goals Hinostroza/Krebs tied with 3, TOI 14:35 led by Cozens 15:24
    3. Asplund-Mitts-Olofsson       23 points Mitts/VO tied with 9, 10 goals led by VO with 7, TOI 14:34 led by Mitts with 16:42
    4. Girgs (7 games)-Eakin-Okposo.  10 points led by Okposo 8, 5 goals led by Okposo 4, TOI 14:59 led by Okposo 17: 17

Interesting side notes: Cozens has 0 goals this month. Asplund with lowest TOI 11:47. Eakin with 0 points for the month.

    Defense Stats:

    1. Dahlin-Jokiharju-Samuelsson-Bryson                         16 Points led by Dahlin w/9, TOI 22:01 led by Dahlin 24:13,
    2. 3rd pairing guys: Pysyk-Fitzgerald-Butcher-Miller     6 points Butcher/Miller tied with 2, TOI 15:30 led by Fitzgerald 16:33

  16. My observations of the game:

    1. Thompson, Olofsson and Anderson had some of their worst games of the year. Thompson was a turnover machine, Olofsson was invisible and Anderson probably on most days makes the save on a couple of those goals.
    2. Couldn't agree more with 2 of our posters, Mitts makes plays that go under the radar that very few else can make, the 2 secondary assists yesterday were perfect examples of such
    3. It was very obvious to me especially yesterday that some of our issues with looking disjointed was caused by Butcher, Fitzgerald and Joker taking forever to get the puck up the ice. The Rangers were able to setup their defense and cause chaos because of it.
    4. Okposo not only apparently leads in the locker room but no doubt leads with his play, that goal was nothing short of awesome and will power
    5. Butcher needed to shampoo his hair really well after the game because he had his head up his @ss on Panarin's goal, nice shot on his goal though
    6. +/- can be such a misleading stat. Dahlin was -3 yesterday. Like it was his fault that Thompson coughs up 2 goals by falling down and that misguided pass in OT. The 2nd goal of the game was a well played play by Dahlin on the 2 on 1 but the turnover and in my view Anderson's misplay of the shot became his problem?? Sometimes the eye test is best.
    7. It seems like the common view is Quinn will eventually replace Hinostroza in the lineup, I'm beginning to wonder if he sticks and Olofsson loses his spot. His play can be very inconsistent at best even considering his injury may have held him back earlier this year.
    8. Does Asplund replace Eakin as Okposo's and Girgensons C next year??
