    This isn’t a good take.
Sergachev suffered a horrific injury that required a stretcher to get him off the ice, surgery on a fractured fibula & fractured tibia, and returned for game four.

If so, more the reason he should’ve sat out the playoffs to heal. Not saying it wasn’t a horrific injury, just the timing is a bit suspect, especially for a team who has done this before.

Wow what a strange deal for TB. A team in cap trouble adding that much more to it. Something has to give there this summer.

My favor part of the article was this:

“…includes '20 playoff MVP Victor Hedman, Erik Cernak and Mikhail Sergachev, who missed several months with a broken leg before making a surprise return in the first round.”

It was actually magic. Magic caused the guy making $8.5M per year to be ready as soon as the playoffs started.

Cozens scores shorthanded in OT to win it for Canada.

    2 more goals today.

    on 🔥

So, what’s the deal here? Is the level of competition that much lower than the NHL or is he just on fire? I get there are many NHL players on these rosters, but they can’t all be.

Just throwing this out there...   Trevor Connelly is a top 5 talent.     He's a Kyle Connor clone.

I understand the baggage, but he's made a complete 180 from where he was 5-6 years ago.     His character development has been outstanding and he's been a model teammate.

What doesn't get talked about enough is the effort he's put in to learn from his mistake... the volunteer work, taking classes, speaking with various groups, etc..

Sure, he can't undo what he did and he has to live with that, but he's done everything in his power to learn from his mistake and he's a better person today because of it.

I have no concerns about his character, and he's an uber talented kid..  he'd been a steal at 11.

So, I had never heard of this kid. I like to give people 2nd chances, especially young kids. I also think it’s very hard for people to change who they really are. I went into it with an open mind anyways.

I came across the swastika incident and maybe a racial slur. Ok, kids do really dumb stuff. Even our very own golden boy Josh Allen had similar baggage, but we still drafted him. Then I read this article:

    https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5290107/2024/02/22/nhl-draft-prospect-trevor-connelly/

I can’t see how we would possibly draft him. He’s played on a billion teams, leaving each one due to “no comment” or some other attitude/bullying issue. Even got kicked out of Bishop Kearney after 2 weeks. And all this stuff really wasn’t that long ago.

    Friedman: Blue Jackets' GM search

“Kings senior adviser to the GM Marc Bergevin and Kraken assistant GM Jason Botterill are believed to have talked to Columbus, but it doesn't appear that a decision is imminent.”

    Oh please hire Botts.

I’ve been thinking about this one. Was Botterill really that bad? Sure, there was a trade of a 6th for a later 6th. Truly a boneheaded move and I wonder why he did it. But the rest of our current team is basically Botterill’s. Besides that, if the rumors were true, Pegs forced the signing of Skinner on him. And, whether we truly think ROR had to go, Pegs also forced him to trade him prior to the bonus payout.

The Krueger hire was a bad one, but the hire sounded more like no one else wanted the job. The Nylander pick was bad and I don’t think we really found anyone of worth in the latter rounds. If anything, it’s negative on him for not listening to his scouting staff, which are virtually the same people around today.

Hard to say, but maybe Marner agrees to waive his no trade clause for some teams. Nylander might be fine. Matthews hard to say. Clash of egos or he buys in like Eichel did with Cassidy?

Thing is, Eichel had sort of hit rock bottom. Hadn’t played in a year, when he did play that year, wasn’t that good, then had a big drama with the Sabres. It had to be a humbling experience.

Matthews? He’s at the top of his game, probably doesn’t think his poop stinks, and likely thinks he’s a god, like Marner does. Doubt he’s going to want a coach coming in to knock him off his game.

No one will like my answer, but Muel is dead weight. Doesn't play enough. Analytics are poor. 'his' win loss record is good...but that has to be taken with a grain of salt based on his role. That is 4 million I personally would love to shed

He certainly stands out as someone who isn’t earning his pay, but this is mostly due to his injury history. I’m not going to call a 24 year-old defenseman dead weight though. Overpaid at this point in time, yes. That said, I expect him to have a decent bounce back year under Ruff.

  8. I think UPL is only going to get better next year under Ruff. I don’t know whether the 2nd half of the year was our defense or UPL or both, but I would hope to think our D is going have to take a big step under Ruff. If Power and Byram both improve, UPL will appear better, even with no self-improvement.

Ellis, Wilford, Appert…organizational status quo.  Expect more of the same in terms of the roster come this summer.

He may have donned a Sabres sweater, even coached them for 15 years, but Ruff hasn’t been part of the Sabres for over 10 years. He’s your outsider or “breath of fresh air” and he’s the one who is the most important of them all. It just looks like he surrounded himself with people who know these players inside and out. That shouldn’t take away what type of coach Lindy is.

I agree completely with Adam’s current narrative. The problem has been coaching and leadership. The talent is now there. Yes we need some vet depth but we don’t need no key talent piece.

I thought this was obvious two years ago and am mad he took this long to fire Granato, but I believe he has the right assessment on things.

    I see I’m a minority here

Nah. There may be a few others who agree. I really don’t see a problem with our top 6. Let’s pretend Skinner doesn’t even exist (yet he does), we still have Tage, Tuch, Benson, Cozens, JJP, and Quinn. That’s a very “talented” bunch and I think Ruff will set them straight. But, beyond the top 6, the rest of the roster is effectively missing. Lots of question marks there. We need at least 3 more proven NHLers. Anyone not on the Sabres this year can stay in Rochester.

Yea, Marner said it. It was cringy.

And this is why they get bounced early each year. If you think you can do no wrong, that you are infallible, there really isn’t any reason to do better. This also points to the city being the problem, not necessarily the team itself.

UPL, from Jan 1 through the end of the year, was: 20w and 16L, a .919 save percentage and 2.31 GAA.  That alone would not impact how much I pay him.

UPL, from the start of the season through Jan 1 was: 7w 10L, an .892 save percentage and 3.13 GAA. That alone would not impact how much I pay him.

His entire season, he was 27w, 26L, .910 save perentage and 2.31 gaa.  THOSE are the numbers I would use to evaluate him because it includes EVERYTHING he did.

(If anything, I MIGHT slightly skew toward the end of the season, as if there was any 'development' that is when it would show...but still, don't cherry pick. He is who he was the entire season)

His entire season, the good, and the bad, should impact negotiations.  That was .910 and 2.31...for a single (most recent) season in his career.

He might just say he wants a 1-year deal to prove he’s the guy from the 2nd half of the season. He’d be betting on himself and if he truly is the 2nd half guy, he’s either going to end up “needing a change” or be very expensive. And with Ruff behind the bench, who’s a big UPL fan btw and will force our D to be better in front of him, I’d bet he’s the guy from the 2nd half too.

  13. I would rather trade someone already in our pipeline than trade the 1st rounder. We have a lot of the same thing in our pipeline and I don’t see many difference makers. The pick represents a do-over or new direction (or a stab at drafting another Benson). I would move two of Östlund, Rosen, or Kulich if any team has a love affair with them and wants to send us someone decent. In fact, I could be convinced to move all of them. I wouldn’t move Savoie unless some really wants to overpay.

Have you been to Raleigh in the last decade? I can easily see how someone would prefer Raleigh to Buffalo.

I have not in fact. Last time I was there must’ve been close to 20 years ago. May check it out. Would’ve hoped the same could be said of Buffalo, which definitely has changed, but at a much slower clip. Either way, I live in a DC suburb now, so look down at most other places (but still don’t like living here!)

It's the wife that makes the decision.

I don’t doubt this is true, but to say someone prefers Raleigh-Durham to Buffalo is kind of funny. I mean, neither are glamorous places by any stretch of the imagination, but I guess weather and taxes win out.
