I was banging the drum a bit to keep Risto.  But now that a near replacement level player is here I'm fine with a trade.  But only if we can get a good 2C back.  Risto still holds a decent amount of value.  Sabres arn't in cap trouble so only trade him if it really upgrades the forwards.

Precisely. Bogo is out to start the season. Pilut could need more AHL seasoning. I don't want Dahlin to have to log 24+ minutes a night and be beat up by midseason like we used to do to Risto. If Risto can get a legit 2C on reasonable term + a pick... sure. If not, let Ristolainen play fewer minutes with a responsible LHD, and move him later.

But now... we'll need to clean just a little bit. Scandella for a conditional 6th? etc.

I dont like having him and Skinner on the same line. Two undersized forwards, maybe its old school thinking but you need someone to win some puck battles along the wall.

Agreed. I think if Mitts were ready for 2C or we signed a legitimate 2C-level center...  (and if Okposo we able to regain his game a full 1.5 years removed from his health scare...), Olof-2C-Okposo might be good. But likely with the Okposo-train moving on... we don't have the winger who is going to win the board battles. Girgensons might, but then he hasn't shown anything with the win --- remember, he played with Jack a ton in 17-18 and had like 14 points to show for it.

As the roster  stands now he's a shoe in.

Top 6 in my squadron for sure.

Other notes: The only question is whether he plays RW instead of his listed left -- with Skinner-Eichel, and become a Pominville with the legs to keep up all year. Or does he play left wing on the 2nd line (with maybe Reinhart and a new center), or a brand new 2nd line altogether if Skinner-Eichel-Reinhart remains the top line.

Am I imagining things or does he look a bit more built?

It's a random and useless exercise I do each summer, but I look back at how the Sabres listed the height and weight of the repeat attendees. Most of the time... same height, same weight. No disintegrations.

But on occasion, we get some good tidbits. Like last year, Devante Stephens gained the most muscle mass by packing on 18 pounds between 2017 and 2018.

Here are my main highlights for this year's roster:

    • Ryan Johnson grew to 6'0" between drafting/combine and dev camp.
    • Asplund gained 15 # since 2018 dev camp
    • Olofsson, Borgen, and Pilut all gained 8 # since 2018
    • But...  Samuelsson lost...  25 pounds! since the 2018 camp roster. He was 218 and is now listed at 193.

All FWIW and take the numbers with a grain of salt.

Pavelski will not want to join a rebuild and Buffalo would be crazy to spend enough money to lure him.

I heart Pavelski. I heart heart Pavelski. Like Anakin and Padme... Aname. That's me and Pavelski.

But I would lose respect for him if he came to the Sabres. Dude has been on SJ all his life. He's never won a Cup. He needs to be going all-out "1990s/2000s veteran goes to Detroit for the Cup" mode. Sign a 1-year deal with the best team for frugal cash, and if that doesn't work, go to the best team the year after. He absolutely should not come here if he wants to win a championship in his window. (Although Pavelski for $6Mx3 on our second line would go a big way to helping us open our window. Moreso, in my opinion, than giving Duchene a $8Mx7 contract.)

  6. Speed is good. And he's 20 years old so does he come over to the AHL this season or does his contract keep him with HC Praha another season? I hope he does well.

Edit: Research, Ebriate, research. He's under contract until 2021, so we might not ever see him in an Amerks or Sabres uniform. But maybe he'll blossom and become a great role player. Good luck, Rousek!

    Aren’t there 2 Ahos?

I knew it. I'm surrounded by Ahos.

Also, the great era vs. era debate. I'm of the opinion that if you just used a time machine and plunked a 1980s team against a modern team -- and kept the 80s equipment, and sticks, and methods, and no video, and diet, and training habits, etc... the modern team would dominate the 80s squad as a team. Watching an 80s game... there's so much space. The defensemen allow so much space and speed through the neutral zone, it's absurd. Then, a standup vs. a butterfly, and pad sizes. Whip in the sticks. And the modern team has the best players in the world on each line, not just Canada and a handful of other players. The 80s team would be ok for a bit, but inexorably be ground down, or the top line would manage to stay afloat, but the bottom end wouldn't stack up.

But! Take a modern team and give them 1980s (or 1950s for even more separation) diet, workout regimen, film study (ha), defensive systems, pads, or no goalie masks, etc. And those 1980s super teams like the Oilers and Isles? Yeah, they still win their Cups.

They're all supreme athletes at the top of their era's game.

In hockey it's less pronounced than it would be in football. Football's modern offensive lines and defensive lines would crush earlier teams by being bigger, stronger, and also faster. Time machine football would be unwatchable.

Which “happened” first? Sabres or Mustangs?

Per wikipedia, the Buick LeSabre hit the market in 1959 and the Ford Mustang in '62 and ... I suppose officially in '64 in its realized form. But historically it's really common for junior leagues, colleges, and such to have copycat jerseys and not face anything punitive.

It's ok.  Turcotte falling was highly unlikely.

Exactly. He's the one who slid, and it wasn't going to be too far unless teams had gotten very very scared by the injury.

Dach is one of the dominoes that had to fall.

We should get one of Turcotte Zegras Cozens

    Turcotte and Zegras are alive!

And right now Dach feels like he can take on the entire Empire NHL himself. And now I can retire that line.

And this board would spontaneously combust. As it should.

Spencer Knight. One K. A silent K, at that! Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. AKA the clone of Lukkonen...  6 Ks. Why would we deny ourselves so many consonants?

  13. PK to the Leafs? Hmm. I can see Nashville checking in with Arizona now that Housley is the D coach there. But the Coyotes don't have a ton of cap space. They'd need to swing Goligoski or Galchenyuk back. OEL and Subban playing "housley's rushing" defense (the Nashville version of a few years back, not our version, obviously) would be fun.

    Vesey was TM’s guy.

For the moment. (Rumor has it, but I refuse to believe it) he'll soon be back in our hands. Then he'd be JBot's guy, too.

And for the record: I'm not intending to continue the Vesey speculation. I hope that ship has crashed into an planetary shield.

Folks calm.  Chad never said such a deal existed or was happening.

Fear leads to suffering. Suffering leads to tanking. Tanking leads to new GMs and trading for the sake of trading for their guys, leads to fear of trades and.... Panic! It's fun, isn't it?

Not sure why there is so much Vesey love from JBot.

    He went to college?

Seriously, we've seen that Vesey is JAG. Why would we trade a steady young defenseman with additional room for improvement... for Jimmy Vesey? Why would we keep trading for this guy? What is the point?

True, which is probably why JBot wins any trade involving Risto.  He's not exactly a motivated seller and the other prize, Trouba, is off the table.  In this case JBot holds the cards.  Let's see what he can do from a position of power.

Hopefully he can do better then TM did when he made his deals from a position of power. ......

These positions of power have me concerned. Is this a "It's over.... I have the high ground" sort of power, or a "You underestimate my power!" sort of power?
