    The first class went pretty well, I did not realize how much squatting I'd be doing. I'm already sore from one day, haha. The instructor kept making sure we had our knees bent at all times.

     

    He covered normal forward stride, forward swizzle and backward swizzle. Most of that I remember from rollerblading when I was younger. It was the first time I attempted to skate backwards in a long time and I managed to do it without falling.

     

    The plow stop is a new one I learned and had a lot of trouble with. It felt like I didn't have enough strength to push my legs out to the sides hard enough, though I might have just been bending my knees inwards too far. I just need to keep practicing.

     

    I get free public skate during the 7 weeks of lessons, so I'm going to try to get to the rink as often as I can.

    Ended up going to the San Diego Ice Arena and tried on some skates. I ended up going with the Bauer Vapor X60. My feet are pretty wide and they dont normally carry my size in EE width. I tried D and it felt too narrow and tried a size up in EE and it felt good just too much room at the toe. So they special ordered me a pair and it should be here in a week.

    San Diego Ice Arena's pro shop looks like it offers a good selection of Bauer and Graf skates. Escondido Ice Plex might have a pro shop but I can't tell. Google says there's a Hockey Giant in Carlsbad but I think it's their corporate office. You could call Hockey Giant to find out or else drive up to the one in San Jose. They'd have the biggest selection anywhere near you.

     

    Thanks, I think the Escondido one has a pro shop, but I can't remember, I went there once several years ago.

    Looks like Hockey Giant has a location in Anaheim (way closer than San Jose), but I'll probably check out San Diego Ice Arena first.

    Heh, well that makes me feel a bit better. My dad recommended that I get my own skates instead of using the rentals, so I will look into that. I checked craigslist, but it seems like used skates are pretty rare around here in San Diego. None in my size.

     

    The ice rink I'm going to doesn't have a pro shop, but there's another one about 20 miles away that does, so I might check that out.

    This is one of those nights that separated the hard core fans from the chaff. If you're not watching and commenting on this game, you're not hard core...

     

    I watched the whole first period, had to run some errands. When I got back home (game was already over), I didn't bother watching the rest of the game since it ended in the first period.

    Just thought I'd bump this thread.

     

    I finally took the first step to accomplish my goal, since I was a kid, of playing ice hockey. I signed up for hockey skating lessons at the local ice rink. I turn 29yrs old in March, I figured time is running out to get started. I used to roller blade all the time when I was younger, so skating forward is not a problem, I need to learn skating backwards and stopping. I used to have my own net that I'd shoot at in the driveway, so I think if I can get the skating down, I won't be toooo bad. Definitely going to see how the class goes before sinking any money into equipment, but reading through this thread was pretty helpful.

    I really don't understand why almost every time Ruhwedel is mentioned, it is in a negative way (not that you are doing that here, but it happens often.)

     

    From what I saw of him with the Sabres, he was not a tire fire even in his first few games, and the games I saw Rochester play on tv and in person, he seemed pretty good. Kinda like a guy that would be decent as a #3 or #4 guy, and a pretty damn great guy to have on your #5 or #6 pairing.

     

    I've noticed this too, I'm rooting for the San Diego kid to make it up to the Sabres someday.

    I bought a Roku 3 and watching the Sabres game on that now, instead of through my laptop. For some reason I don't get the commercials and intermission report. But if I watch it from my laptop, I can. Any way to make it so I can see the intermission reports on Roku? I like the convenience of not having to hook my laptop up to the big screen every game, but not at the expense of intermission and commercials.

     

    Sometimes they only show intermission/commercials on one of the feeds. It's possible your laptop has the away feed on? The home feed isn't showing intermission/commercials today.

     

    Actually, I am watching on my new PS4, so maybe that doesn't have it either...
