  1. Depends on where you cut off goalies.  Among goalies with at least 8 starts, he's 11th.  Among goalies with at least 10 starts, he's 9th.  15 starts, 7th.  20 starts, 6th.  21 starts, 4th.

I was just going by Yahoo sports qualified leaders...not sure if every site is different as to what they consider qualified but usually it's determined by the league and comes from playing in X amount of games or X amount of minutes

  2. They played a different style with Jack out of the lineup, so scoring chances were down as well.. If you also look at goals allowed per game, BUF is giving up 1 more goal per game with him in the lineup. The lesson here is that it's a system thing, not just Jack doing all this on his own.

That is true as well, but it was ridiculous they played that style without him to begin with.  The results clearly show we are a much better team when we play offensively rather than defensively

  3. All these weaknesses and one of the worst defenses in the league in front of him, and he's still one of the best goaltenders in the league. Can you imagine how good he's going to be when those get corrected? I can't believe Murray only spent a mid 1st rounder to pick up a young goaltender with Vezina potential.

And couple that with goaltenders usually don't hit their prime until age 28 and he could be a really really good one...

  4. After much research and discussion,  Guhle, had he made the team out of camp, could be here now, but since he was sent down to start the season he can only be recalled in an emergency or after his Jr season (including playoffs) is complete.

Sabres have to internally be kicking themselves with how the D has played this year, and with how he played when called up...

  5. Here's something else on Lehner:  it's fair, IMHO, to attribute some of the Sabres' PK deficiencies to him -- I think there's more than a little truth to the axiom that your best penalty-killer has to be your goalie.

Lehner ranks 21st in PK SV% and has surrendered the 6th-most PPGs.

However, it's fair to note that Carey Price's PK #s are worse than Lehner's -- Price has surrendered the most PPGs in the NHL and is 25th in PK SV%.  Price is 9th in overall SV%; Lehner is now 4th.

OK, but how many times are the PP players scoring after being allowed to stand wide open in the slot with no defender anywhere near them?  Seems to happen at least once a game on a PP with this team and it usually ends up in our net...

    Lehner is actually 6th

  6. How many were even strength? Because even strength scoring has been what myself and a few others harp on. I'm sure the rates are better with Eichel, and particularly given Kane's hot streak, but it's still a big problem overall.

Well, we have scored 39 goals on the power play(Side Note:  Sabres now have the best powerplay in the NHL at 23.8% passing Columbus last night) and one shorthanded.  Sabres have won 6 times in OT, so we remove those 6 since its a glorified pick up hockey game 3-3.

So out of their 136 goals, 90 have been scored at even strength.  They have given up 106 goals at even strength, which leaves them with a 0.90 ratio of Even strength goals for vs Even strength goals against, which is tied for 21st in the NHL with the Boston Bruins...

This website has some pretty cool stat breakdowns:

    https://www.sportingcharts.com/stats/nhl/team/

  7. The differences are pretty staggering, especially from an offensive point of view:

    Pre-Eichel(21 games):

    #Times Sabres were shutout: 3

    #Times the Sabres scored 1 goal: 9

    #Times the Sabres scored 2 goals: 4

Combined games the Sabres scored 2 goals or less: 16/21(76%)

    Goals per Game: 1.62

Record: 7-9-5(19 points) 74 point pace

    Post-Eichel(34 games)

    #Times Shutout: 0

    #Times Scored 1 goal: 8

    #Times scored 2 goals: 6

Combined games 2 goals or less: 14/34(41%)

    Goals per Game: 3.00

Record: 16-13-5(37 points) 89 point pace

The change in offense is ridiculous....the team averages almost a goal and a half MORE with one player in the lineup??

  8. I dunno....those look like pretty damn good starting goalie numbers to me....6th in the NHL in save percentage...

    Capture.png

Must be nice to play on a team like Holtby does for a goalie....has played 6 more games and face 63 fewer shots than Lehner has...

Let's look at Shots per 60 minutes of the goalies in this snippet:

    Dubnyk: 29.58

    Anderson 32.27

    Darling: 30.78

    Bobrovsky: 29.31

    Holtby: 27.35

    Lehner: 33.56

    Murray: 30.58

    Greiss: 30.95

    Nillson: 34.03

So basically the Sabres give up shots like they are going out of style with Nillson facing even more per 60 minutes than Lehner...and before someone says they are a lot of long distance shots, well yes that is true, but I'd be willing to bet the Sabre goalies also face far more shots from wide open players in the slot the defenders and forwards simply forget about and shots from the 3rd man trailing which the Sabres still haven't figured out to cover more than halfway through the season. These are prime scoring chances the Sabres give up as if they will earn a prize from the NHL by leading the league in those categories...

.925 save percentage, 6th in the NHL and only .02 back from being 2nd in the NHL?  Looks pretty damn good to me, but maybe I'm just imagining things....his win total would be up significantly if the Sabres didn't score 0,1, or 2 goals in half their games this year...especially in the beginning with Eichel out.

  9. How bout we just sign Nillson??  Why the hell do we have to keep playing musical goalies every year with the backups?  Find a guy that can be a viable fill in and sign him for a few years.  Is GMTM determined to get a backup that eventually sucks so Lehner is forced to play 65 games a year??

    Move Kulikov and Franson.

No idea why Ghule is stuck in juniors when he would be the 3rd best DMan on the team right now and we could desperately use his puck-moving and skating ability back there...

  10. Sabres stats on Twitter just put this out there (in re Sabres goalies both being top 10 SV% at present):

"Per Elias, the last time 2 Sabres goalies finished the season in the top 10 was in 1992-93 (Dominik Hasek-7th, .896 & Grant Fuhr-9th, .893)."

    Look at those SV%'s!

Back when the NHL valued goals instead of defensive battles...

  11. I have to disagree, the Sabres routinely give up more shots from the slot on an almost nightly basis.

I see your point, but regardless of how the shots come in, both Nilsson and Lehner are doing their jobs and doing it well. You don't tell people Ovechkin isn't as good as we think he is when he puts up 50+ goals a year, just because he's a power play specialist.

So if being in the top seven in save percentage, but it's an inflated stat because of perimeter shots, and some significant criticism from the members on this board........... am I to assume that they would need to be in the top three to be playing at an acceptable level?

I agree with some about the rebound control, although I don't think it's nearly as bad as some make it out to be................. but I just don't see how these guys can be performing any better especially when you consider what people think of their defense (on top of the injuries).

This thread is about Lehner NOT being a starter. What exactly does he have to do to gain the acceptance of Sabres fans? Are we still holding it over his head, the three games he lost in shooutouts, the ones in which the Sabres scored exactly zero goals in support?

    ;)

I'm just trying to understand the logic behind the criticism. I'm not sure what Lehner needs to do for people to be happy. The Sabres didn't have a goaltender worthy of being a full time starter on the roster when Murray traded for Lehner. Of course it took a 1st rounder to get him, no team is going to trade a young goaltender, with potential, with a low cap hit for anything less. If Murray traded for one of the big names on the market it would have come with a cap hit and most likely would have prevented Murray from signing Okposo.

The Sabres give up so many wide open shots from the slot and to the 3rd main trailing I often wonder if the coaches even work on it.  I know they must but it's ridiculous...the same play over and over and over again.  Guys wide open in the slot for one timers or guys cruising down the slot as the 3rd man in for great scoring chances...
