  1. Another thing with Babcock: if he reaches out, I'm sure Scotty Bowman would speak glowingly of the area and fans. Doubt that moves the needle much on a final decision, but it's something.

    WGR will have it.

I should hope so, he still lives here, lol

  2. I am a bit torn on this one. Sort of like blaming the soldiers and officers when the politicians bear more of the responsibility. I was a Bills season ticket holder from 1986 until February. My Dad had them from 1974. I haven't lived in WNY since 1990. But I renewed every year because I thought it might help keep the team and because I felt a part of something. When they hired Ryan I knew I didn't want to be part of whatever they believe it is they are building. I hope against hope that the Sabres don't become the same. While I don't believe Nolan earned another go, I just think it is all is a bit unseemly. I'll be fine just need to go shower.

Uhh...the Bills are building a team that will go to the playoffs?  Yeah, why would anyone want to stockpile possibly the most talent on an NFL roster?  Its sheer madness...

  3. From Buffalo News article today explaining what might have been the cause:

" Nolan had difficulty putting together his coaching staff last summer, and failed to bring in a proven defensive-minded assistant to groom Buffalo's young core of defensemen, who struggled with consistency this season.

Nolan also had a poor working relationship with general manager Tim Murray, as the two barely consulted this year."

Nolan was pissed about some of the players he wanted being in Rochester and probably having a revolving door in goal most of the year...he knew what he was signing up for, but probably din't think it would be this bad...

  4. While it may seem unlikely, there is a possibility of him playing another year, especially now that BU lost the title game. When asked about it last night, Eichel, while clearly not tipping his hand, articulated the advantages to staying in school and furthering his development.

Question, does this have any impact on drafting him, assuming the 80% probability comes to pass and the Sabres draft second?

No way...he is going to want to prove he is better than McDavid and no way he can do that in college

  5. We need to be very vocal in showing the team we still love them...while I understand why people are openly cheering against them the last month, I'm sure it doesn't feel good...

Let the Pens win. Boston misses the playoffs wins the lottery then trades down to #2 to draft hometown boy Eichel while BUF gets McDavid.... right?

F Boston...almost worth the Pens winning just so they get bounced

  6. I also believe that there is no way in hell we'll also get Mike Babcock so I would forget about that scenario. I know T-Pegs has the cash and we will have either MCDAVID OR EICHEL next season but to think we will get a franchise player and Hall of Fame head coach in the same season is serious dreaming. You can dream big and if this should somehow happen then we will have gone from outhouse to penthouse in a very short period of time. I am willling to give Ted the shot with young talent and let the chips fall where they may from that point. Not saying the Sabres won't go after Babcock but so will pretty much everyone else so he can make his own choice as to what is more dear to him. (location? the challenge? what his family would prefer? etc...)

I'm not sure why there is this much anti-Ted sentiment on this question? Do you not remember the previous team he coached? We had little to no talent (but we did have a goaltender!!) and that was some of the most exciting Sabres hockey in quite some time. You knew you were going to see a strong effort and everyone was going to have each others backs. I loved those teams. Ted is good with the youngsters. Sometimes you have to be tough for them to develop into character players. Now that the McDavid/Eichel situation has been decided I expect to see this type of club play tonight against Pitt as the tank is officially over. I believe tonight's effort will be strong against a Pitt team that needs this game. We shall see. All I'm saying is, give Ted one to 2 more seasons  to see the real Nolan team. I think we'll all enjoy hockey in Western New York once again. (and it has been a long time coming)

On a not related topic, anyone expecting Miller to fail miserably in the playoffs with Vancouver this season besides me? I'm expecting it again big time!

Why wouldn't a coach want to come to a place where he has a young team that is going to be exceptionally talented in a few years? Add that to the fact we are the hockey center of the US and Pegula has money to burn and isn't afraid to spend it, and I think I like our odds.

As fans, we need to change the "Whoa is me" mindset we have had the last 30 years.  I know it takes a while but those days are long gone for both the Sabres and the Bills.

  7. I would hire Ted Nolan as personal coach if he is not retained by the Sabres.  I would like to make two points.  Firstly, no matter what GMTM might want, it will be up to TP.  Secondly, it has been reassuring to me personally to hear Ted Nolan speak about trying your best, and living for the present in the face of adversity.

I think he is a good coach.  I am not an expert.  I will, however, claim as much expertise in judging a man's character as the next gal.  To me, Ted Nolan is an absolute keeper.

I am tired of the drama - the I will hate you unless, the I will not spend a dime unless, the do this or else.  It is a team game, and even the boss is just a player in the game.  When people say "perspective," they usually do so to claim objectivity, or even omniscience.  In this case, it is just me, and what I think of the guy.

I think Nolan is an exceptional coach at getting players to give everything they have and in cases where the team isn't very talented, getting them to play above their talent level, through sheer motivation, the players love and respect for him which makes them willing to literally skate through the end boards for him, and the way he mentally prepares them to be ready to give their best.

That being said, I don't think he is a good enough X's and O's coach to match wits with other NHL coaches with top level talent.  I think you would see him get exposed in the playoffs where strategy really comes into play over the course of a long series.  I think he has done a great job getting the team to the point they are at now, but I don't think he is the right coach for the next part of the journey once they become good.  Perhaps he will get another year to develop the young players, but I'd give equal odds that Murray wants to hire the coach he want for the next part of the journey a year earlier than needed to give him time to grow with the players.

I'd expect the Sabres to pursue Mike Babcock pretty strongly and would give them a good chance of landing him with Pegula's deep pockets and the collection of young talent we have coming up in the near future...

  8. I'm pretty sure Tesla transmitted enough energy wirelessly to light up some light bulbs back around 1935 ? My facts could be off but I remember reading something about that. The man was otherworldly.

Yes Tesla successfully accomplished this in Colorado but got funding pulled when his investors found out he planned on creating free energy for people by his methods. He also had a car that ran with no fuel but received energy from the "aethos"...actually drove this vehicle in Niagara Falls during his work on the power plant...

    Tesla was simply ingenious

All transformers transmit energy wirelessly. Same with RFID tags, your ez pass, the chip in your credit card, and lightbulbs.

The key here is the directional accuracy. Tesla's problem was he created a system that could not be commercialized.

He didn't want it commercialized which is why funding was pulled and it was never finished

  9.

Yep, it's the Fermi Paradox and I highly recommend this book about it: http://smile.amazon.com/Universe-Teeming-Aliens-WHERE-EVERYBODY/dp/0387955011/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417463476&sr=8-1&keywords=fermi+paradox

Summary: In response to Enrico Fermi's famous 1950 question concerning the existence of advanced civilizations elsewhere, physicist Webb critically examines 50 resolutions to explain the total absence of empirical evidence for probes, starships, and communications from extraterrestrials. He focuses on our Milky Way Galaxy, which to date has yielded no objects or signals that indicate the existence of alien beings with intelligence and technology. His comprehensive analysis covers topics ranging from the Drake equation and Dyson spheres to the panspermia hypothesis and anthropic arguments. Of special interest are the discussions on the DNA molecule, the origin of life on Earth, and the threats to organic evolution on this planet (including mass extinctions). Webb himself concludes that the "great silence" in nature probably results from humankind's being the only civilization now in this galaxy, if not in the entire universe. This richly informative and very engaging book is recommended for most academic and public library science collections.

    Best thread ever.

Fermi/Webb must not have talked with any Nazi scientists who claim otherwise...and considering how they had technology the rest of the world didn't even know about it really makes you wonder...
  10. What about the Yotes? Obviously the Eulers do. I guess my point is they use the 12/15 stat in the article to demonstrate the importance of top-3 picks, but if, say 26/30 of all NHL teams have a top-3 pick, that stat is meaningless.

Coyote fans don't even know what's going on...they in no way shape or form deserve either of those players

We have it right now with Bogo.

That's why I'm an EN GIN EAR. I notice stuff like that.

    Lol I forgot about Bogo

  11. The Sabres final 3 games are far easier than Arizona's. I can see this going down to the wire.

They are but let's not forget Buffalo is a bad team and even teams like Carolina and Columbus are much better than us...Columbus is on a 9 game winning streak

You must not have watched much of Eichel. The kid is pretty good.

I would say that is an understatement...he dominated college hockey as a Freshman

I'm actually not embarrassed at all and I think there's actually a small portion of NHL fans who are a little envious of our position right now. We already own the best prospect pool in the league, and if/when we finish the season dead last we will also pick up a potential franchise changing player in the draft. I haven't been this excited as Sabres fan in quite some time

I expect us to become really good, really fast..playoffs within 2 years...moderate improvement next year, huge leap following year

  12. He is a hard worker who isn't afraid to get his nose dirty but has some offensive upside...

Has potential to be a 10-15 goal scorer on the 3rd line and play some good minutes for us...I like the kid
