  1. Umm, I'm kind of rooting for the Cards, but the infield fly rule on a ball hit 50 yards past the infield? Really?

I haven't seen a shafting like this since No Goal. Absolutely unreal. And no, I don't expect that Chipper hit to lead to a rally. I'm a Braves fan, but not a big baseball fan (distant 4th on my sports list), I'd be freaking out right now if I truly loved the sport.

  2. I'm getting an opportunity to meet former first lady Laura Bush! She's coming to UB in a couple of weeks for the Distinguished Speaker Series, and afterwards there will be a reception event. The political science department has been offered a chance to invite a handful of students to take part in the reception, and I'm one of them. Meeting a president (former or current) is on my bucket list, so hey, this is pretty damn close. Not sure exactly what the format of the reception will be, but I'm really excited about the opportunity.

  3. It's not like the lockout has caused a drop in the quality of the show. It has been a piss poor endeavor right from the start.

I also have to say that John Murphy may be the second most boring personality on Buffalo Sports Talk Radio. Having employees of the sports teams host radio shows just doesn't work.

For those who share my (low) opinion of Schopp and the Bulldog, having non-team employees doesn't work either :P

  4. Just to be fair: On the other hand, blaming Sylvester is unfair, at least right now. Look, I'm not exactly high on him (read through this thread or any other thread in which he's mentioned), but in this particular instance, he's been asked to perform unreasonably. He can't make something out of nothing every day.

Yea it's definitely not his fault at this point, he was just dealt a terrible hand.

  5. Pointless, pathetic sequels to incredible movies is my complaint. It bothers movies are made simply to grab a quick buck. Just learned today a sequel has been made to "A Christmas Story." It's one of the best Christmas movies ever made. I can't believe a direct to DVD sequel was even thought of. There are just certain movies you gotta leave alone.

    *cough* Taken 2 *cough*

  6. The slurring of the "s" in speech. The First Lady: "The shtruggle of the middle class." I don't tend to hear it in real life, just from the celebrity, political, media etc. class. If it were a legitimate speech impediment, I'd understand. I don't think it is. I think it's learned and affected. It's the thing to do, I guess.

Also, "so." Someone is asked why Obama deserves another four years, and the answer is, "So... the president inherited a mess..." I'm hearing this in the real world now.

Finally, a lot of women are starting to get the bad habit of making almost every sentence sound like a question. "So... the waiter kept ignorING us and we got realLY mad?"

Can anyone relate to my linguistic beefs?

I don't think it's learned at all. I personally took speech therapy for a couple years when I was in grammar school, and I still slur my "s"s unintentionally. It happens.

"Well, then, we should call you 'T-Bone'"

  7. Almost got t-boned by a bus this morning while driving through a light that had been green for at least a minute. For whatever reason, they don't feel the need to obey traffic lights out here. They just go whenever they want, even if cars are in the way.

I was only in Boston briefly a couple of years ago, but it was easily the worst driving experience of my life. And that's saying something seeing as I've driven extensively in Florida, what with their senior population and all :P

  8. People who have to back into their parking spot. Unless you are at a sporting event where it is a pain to get out, why do you feel the need to back into a spot...and oh by the way, you SUCK at doing it if you need to go back and forth 3 times before you get it right.

As one of those people who suck at backing into a space, I fully endorse this statement. If you're terrible, just don't do it.

  9. Ann Arbor. I've been here doing research this week for my dissertation, but that's beside the point--the city itself is awesome. It's clean, beautiful (it's seriously like it was built in a forest and they only cut down the trees they absolutely had to), the people are friendly, and they have great local places to eat and hang out, all at a good price. I've gone to a different place every day and there's still about 15 more I want to go to but can't. If I'm ever accomplished enough in my career to get a job at Michigan, I'm jumping at it. Literally the only bad thing I have to say about the city is the traffic--one or two car lengths per green light. I just ended up walking 4ish miles to eat rather than drive, which is fine once in awhile, but feeling like it's necessary is kind of annoying. Other than that, it's just a great place to be.

  10. I was holding out to see how the Droid RAZR HD specs were shaping up, but now they're looking worse than the S3.

I was doing the same thing until I learned the S3 was the last I could get subsidized and keep my unlimited. I love the build quality Motorolas have. On several occasions my Droid X fell out of my pocket doing pullups at the gym, battery cover flew off and I thought the worst....every single time not a single issue. No cracked screen, no body damage...just perfect. But I decided to just get the Samsung and be a little more careful to preserve unlimited.

  11. So you can still keep unlimited data if you pay full price for a new phone? i have the galaxy nexus so I'm not ready for a new phone anyway, but I was under the assumption that once that phone dies or I get rid of it then my unlimited data goes away too, correct?

Yea, if you buy a new phone for full price you can keep unlimited. The unlimited data only goes away if you sign a new contract.

  12. Verizon Wireless.

I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, but if I want to keep the plan and get a new phone, I have to pay full price for the new phone. If I switch to one of their new plans, it'll cost me more over two years than the full cost of the new phone. AT&T isn't cheaper, Sprint's network is dogshit, Virgin doesn't carry phones that are desirable to me.

I think I might stick with the phone and plan I have until I bury it, like my last phone.

Should have pre-ordered the Galaxy S3 when you had the chance! I was in the same boat as you and wasn't necessarily ready to jump on the S3 bandwagon, but I wanted one more subsidized phone before I needed to start buying off-contract to preserve my unlimited. Love the phone, but it's still ridiculous how carriers are continually bending over customers.
