  1. Just got laid off. Would've been nice if one of those other jobs I applied to had gotten back to me before this happened, but I'll roll with the punches. I've got an hour to pack my stuff up. F'N Fantastic Friday. :death:

Wow, that's brutal. Best of luck finding a new job in short order.

  2. When somebody gives you a deadline for handing in paperwork, and then proceeds to go on vacation (which will last beyond the deadline) several days before the deadline. Deadline Dec. 28th, paperwork sent Dec. 26th, automatic email saying the person is out of the office until Jan. 3rd.

  3. Students who wait until they get their final course grade to make contact and give a whole bunch of excuses for their under-performance. Maybe some or all of it is true, maybe legitimate hardships caused problems with school, but I'm still not going to believe a word of it when it comes after grades are posted.

  4. This year can't end fast enough.

On Monday, my wife's uncle died suddenly of a heart attack. 58 years old. Tom was the human embodiment of love. I never saw him angry, and he was always going out of his way to do things for others. He drove 50 miles after working a 12 hour shift just to stop in at my 30th birthday party for 5 minutes to say hi. Knowing I was having a tough time, last Friday he picked up a copy of LIndy Sports review magazine of this year's Notre Dame football season, and just dropped in my mailbox with a note that says "Merry Christmas and Go Irish."

Tom leaves behind his wife of 35 years and 3 grown daughters, but everyone who ever knew him will be grieving. The fighting Irish lost their biggest fan. Tom did not attend the university, but practically adopted me when I got accepted. I had wrapped up the medallion, made with gold taken from the Dome, that they give graduating seniors. It is inscribed with the University seal, and the words "Family Forever." It was going to be his Christmas gift. I gave it to his widow yesterday.

He didn't have the money to attend many games in his life, but I'm sure he'll be making a stop in Miami before heading to be with his father and daughter in eternal peace. My life will be less full without him now, but so much better for having known him.

Year is almost over, hang in there.

I'll add a fourth: cover charges at a bar where they charge an exorbitant amount for drinks already. I don't go to bars where there's a cover generally.

Even worse when your female friends don't get charged cover. I'm sick of this discrimination against white men! :P

  5. So somehow...in a quest to be somewhat healthier, I substituted Tanqueray for beer. Pros: less calories, no bloating, no peeing, no bottles to return. Cons: I can actually handle booze quite well, so this leads to martini madness and a lighter wallet from green bottles galore and a happy Drane making online Christmas purchases at 2AM with a Barnabyesque BAC.

.....do we even want to know? :P

  6. Job offers.

Recieved a very enticing job offer yesterday. It isn't ideally what I'd like to be doing, but it is with a good compnay at a very competitive rate of pay. I have notified the other companies that I am interested in of the offer. I have until close-of-business Wednesday to make a decision. We'll see if I get any other bites now. Feels good to have the monkey of my back.

    Congrats!

  7. Two people I work with convinced a third that he was too drunk to drive home after the company holiday party last night. One drove his car and the other followed them. 50 miles each way to make sure he got home safely. That's awesome.

What's the most awesome part: that they didn't let him drive drunk, or that the two of them taking the initiative meant you didn't have to get involved? :P

    The lockout.

Why is it awesome? Because everyone here (save political thread), has not had to defend hockey loyalties and get grumpy with each other. There has been a lot more talking about life and the things that matter, and whether they be great or nervewracking, the amount of trust here in the details of the stories lately is very telling. Maybe some people already felt this way, but in a strange little way this has turned into more of a therapy group, or friend network.

I'm happy that this can be an outlet, and I actually wish the best for everyone. We are missing a bunch of regulars, but I hope the game stays locked out so I can get it all out of my system and never have to get involved in a heated debate over a silly game. There are too many more important things and too many good people here to concentrate on.

I hope everyone can find a few simple slivers of awesomeness every day no matter the chaos surrounding them.

    Well said.

  8. My new car comes with a navigation system. The salesmen tried to explain it to me when I got it but I was being distracted with nonsense from my wife and brother. I've read through the manual and I got nothing. I think I'm getting too old for this ######.

The kicker? It's a Caddy, a car made for old dudes and I can't figure out the technology stuff. Unreal.

From my experience, built-in nav systems are about 30x as hard to use as a standalone or phone gps. When I was visiting a friend in Florida, we literally couldn't figure out how to make the nav in her Highlander shut the hell up, and had to mute it which also muted the radio. And apparently her dad's Forerunner was even worse. So yea, they suck.

My complaint for the day: people who complain about lines when Christmas shopping. You're going shopping during the holidays, you know what you're getting yourself into. So either shut up and accept it for what it is, or sit at home and shop online.

  9. Like I said, colds suck. Two days of bitching!

Colds definitely suck. Just got over my first one of the year, and although I generally felt better after a couple days, the cold combined with the weather changes every day have successfully messed up my sinuses.

  10. Finding out about an "optional" dinner meeting a mere 4 hours before it happens. First of all I always find it obnoxious when I'm told something is optional, but it's clear to everybody that attendance is expected. Secondly, a little more notice would have been lovely, it's not like I had plans already or anything....

  11. Ill credit ND with good wins over Stanford and Oklahoma, other than that, the quality was not too amazing. And they nearly lost several games to unranked teams.

Granted the Tide didn't have too hard of a schedule this year, I highly doubt ND would have been able to take on south Carolina or LSU.

Either way the Sec title game should be a good one, and I really just want bragging rights with a ND loss to my old pals in south bend

Just gonna leave this here: http://sports.yahoo....Y3Rpb25z;_ylv=3

  12.

a true irish fan always hedges his bets...

Haha. I think being a Buffalo sports fan has completely ruined me (and really, it's not like ND has helped matters in the past decade) . Not sure if I'm even capable of unwavering confidence anymore.

  13.

60hrz refresh rate makes it lousy for sports

120hz refresh rates on a TV are all marketing, it's not a true 120hz. The set just does some post-processing to up sample the image. IMO it makes it look fake and unrealistic. Only true 120hz panels are on some computer monitors.
