  1. Nice win, Sabres fans. It would be pretty sweet to have a playoff rematch come spring -- 4 regular season games is not nearly enough because these games are just fantastic to watch. Mair, Gaustad, and Peters were indeed a beast of a 4th line in the first. I kept waiting for us to expose them with speed but they really controlled play physically. What happened to their ice time as the game went on?

Mair had 1 shift in the 2nd and none in the 3rd, after 4 what looked like good ones in the first. Peters didn't see the ice after the 1st. Is that normal for you guys?

    -Canes fan

I thought Tanabe actually played a great game. Why is everyone on your boards bashing the guy? - he was plus 2.

(oh, and nobody ran Miller - just a fantasy subplot.)

  2. I'd say the reason we're seeing "this" Vanek guy is because we didn't see him last spring. I'm quite sure that's the very first time in his life he'd ever been seriously disciplined where hockey is concerned - and he's responded.

Vanek is slimmer, faster, more patient and he is backchecking hard.

I think it took some balls for Lindy to bench him in the playoffs knowing this kid's skill.

He has responded, and I just watched his post game interview. His words in paraphrase:

"Not everyone here is going to be happy with this game, we did some things good, we did

some things bad, tomorrow is Boston. That is all I care about."

    Something is rubbing off.

  3. Reading the Canes board, I find it kind of funny that we Sabres fans are full of excuses. This actually seems to be what I've heard from Canes fans other places as well.

Is their understanding of the game so superficial that they don't think losing 4 of your top 6 defensemen is going to have an effect on the outcome?

I am enjoying this rivalry. They won the ECF but in some ways we still embarrassed them.

Lindy got into their heads, the invasion of the south got into their heads, and we nearly took over their building.

They won but are still a little sore about it.

Amazingly Fitzpatrick and Janik are getting a lot of minutes for Vancouver and Tampa

  4. I am expecting a very physical game tonight.

Everyone at the Hot-Sauce-Blue-Cheese Arena needs to bring their A game.

I am expecting to see El Crusho on TV tonight.

I really expect that someone will be dumb enough to run Miller and it will be gloves off.

  5. Um Why?

Miller is the starter, Marty is the backup. Marty got his last start on the second night of a back to back, the 3rd in 4 nights. The team has had 2 days off, Miller should be well rested.

If it were up to me, I would start Marty against the Bruins on Saturday night. Give Marty one night of every back to back, and use him here and there the rest of the season.

Why not? I know Miller is getting the start tonight, but it is early in the season. I would be happy to see him start every third or fourth game.

  6. What a great win. That freak goal really had us back on our heels. Peters singlehandedly changed the momentum and got us back in the game. Miller was extremely sharp and kept us in it. Detroit dominated most of the 1st, got the better of the 2nd (but it was a bit closer) and then it was pretty even in the 3rd and OT. Still, the play was in our end much more than it was in Detroit's.

    A few observations:

    1. Am I crazy, or did we see the torch officially pass from Dominik to Miller? I think Miller may have wrestled it out of Dom's gnarled fingers. Miller is officially a franchise goalie.

    2. Max's last penalty was a phantom call, but his 1st 3 were bonehead penalties. Too many of those team-wide again tonight.

    3. Good to see Kotalik pot the game-winner in the SO, even if it doesn't count in his stats. He needs to start filling it up.

    4. A quietly very strong game, under heavy pressure, from Lydman and Tallinder.

    5. It seemed like we had a number of problems on D playing the puck off the boards behind our net. I think the Wings really know how to work the bounces.

    6. Detroit is really good. Even though they have 6 guys age 35 or older, they are still a fast team. Still, I can't believe they risked their season on Dom staying healthy. He seemed to get up slowly and gingerly a few times tonight. It's just hard to imagine him staying healthy for a deep run in the playoffs.

    7. My 3 stars: 1 - Miller; 2 - Lydman; 3 - Drury.

    8. Starting off 4-0 against those 4 teams, with 3 on the road, is pretty amazing.

    Go Sabres.

Good call on Lydman - he was blocking shots left and right.

  7. And thus, on Oct. 5th in the year of our lord 2006, a movement was born. On this day the fans of the ice mollusks united not to be ashamed of their lowly invertebrate logo. But instead made it the bane of the NHL. Look-out Les habitant, tonight you:

    Will get Slugged!

  8. Observations in no particular order:

So many penalties last night, but most were from the forwards going backwards.

Neither team saw that kind of speed in the pre-season. Lots of holding calls.

I thought Vanek was skating well.

Powerplay looked rushed. While I love having Spacek's point shot, I still thought he could have been more patient and could have stepped up in the zone. Even though 0-9 last night I am not worried.

Novotny is going to be an asset, some nice forechecking, backchecking, and nice work in the faceoff circle.

28 blocked shots plus 8 by Soupy is pretty amazing.

I am wondering about Gaustad and Mair's limited ice time. Was that because of so many special teams things happening or is it because Peters has no business being on the ice.

Did I hear a OOH AHH Sabres on the Warpath in the third? I thought I did.

  9. The game is on versus... I dont think I get that channel with my regular Time Warner Cable in Buffalo.. will the game also be on MSG or am I not going to be able to watch it?

(Ch. 71 in Erie and Niagara counties, Ch. 66 in Springville, Olean and Wellsville)

If you don't get 71 in Buffalo, you don't get it.

  10. Thanks for the report. No tv coverage here so was just relying on RJ's call last night.

Sad to hear about Corvo breaking his foot. Even though I hate the Sens I was looking

forward to seeing Corvo play. How is the depth on your blueline? I guess I just realized that

Pothier is no longer there, what happened to him, I thought he was pretty solid.

Good to see Denny Hamel back in form. I think if he gets waived somebody is going to pick him up.

It would be sad to see him spend another 50 goal season in the A.

Did you get a good look at Vanek last night? We are all hoping he is much more fit than last

year. Also wondering how you sized up Spacek?

I agree, with your comments about Gerber. He'll be a gamer, and I don't think the Ottawa D will play

nearly as much puck dumping as Carolina did in the regular season last year. I think Buffalo has Emery number - it still doesn't sound like he has the lateral movement - Buffalo loved playing the puck cross crease against him. I think we will see Gerber against Buffalo all 8 times.

  11. Heya Folks, its been a long summer, but finally winding down and getting back into hockey! I'll be heading to Scotiabank Place for the game tonight and will do my best to give an unbiased report afterwords on how the game went.

MHIMG - how are you man?

    Looking forward to your evaluation.

In other news, I am hoping that Max's knee isn't serious.

  12. 1 - 0 Buffalo

    Novotny from Vanek and Campbell.

it also sounds like they are giving Sekera quite a lookover.

Roy scores from Mair on the powerplay 2-0.

I know it is preseason, but I love beating on the Leafs.
