  1. They got Reinprecht from Colorado for Ballard. He doesn't really count.

PA, I wouldn't say they overpaid for Gratton. Holzinger and Primeau were garbage. Sarich was the only thing of value in that deal, and we couldn't be sure if he was going to develop into an NHL player or not at that point.

I know he never played a game in a Buffalo sweater, but he was part of the deal that landed us Drury:

    (From sabrefans.com/)

    July 03,2003

Sabres send Keith Ballard to Colorado for Steve Reinprecht. Sabres then trade Rhett Warrener and Steve Reinprecht to Calgary for Chris Drury and Steve Begin

Second part is, like you said about Sarich - at that point, no one knows for certain that Ballard will develop into a quality NHL defenseman. He did, so that makes the deaL a little more even in terms of who got the best of it, but I'd still rather have Drury.

    ;)

  2. It gets even better - we got Warrener from Florida along with their 5th round pick, which we used to select Ryan Miller. Darcy should be in jail for getting whats turns out to be Chris Drury and Ryan Miller for an underachieving defenseman. IIRC the original deal (Peca/Mogilny) was a Muckler deal; it was Darcy who sent Wilson to Florida and Warrener to Calgary, but I could be wrong...

EDIT: DAMN YOU SHRADER! You beat me to it.... ;)

  3. Ward looks a little shaky - need to get some more pucks on the net and keep him moving around - he seems to be overplaying all the Sabres shots...

Paetsch, Janik & Jillson look OK so far - Paetsch doing a good job jumping into the play and keep the puck alive at the blueline. Would like to see the forwards be a little stronger around their own blueline (JP Dumont & Grier had a couple bad clearing attempts that didn't hurt us) and need to see all the Sabres start to HIT THE NET!

  4. hense the greatness of the NHL playoffs...

No argument here... this team should start marketing Sabres-logo Tums and AED defibrillators...would be a huge market for them before Game 7...

Nice to see Weight take a penalty to set up the whole thing...tired of listening to the OLN announcers keep talking about him & Recchi waiving their no-trade clauses for Carolina...

  5. When is Staal going to get called for diving?

By the way, good for him he is good at hockey, because he is not going to win an academy award for that performance.

Brind`Amour did a great job of selling the phantom high stick as well. I really hope that the refs are embarrassed when they review the tape from this one...

And I never want to see Grier head-manning a 2- or 3-on-1 rush again...he has average hands but aside from Max, I have never seen someone manage to lose the puck on his own as easily as Grier does...

  6. Shot was tipped - not Jillson's fault.

Forwards - Dumont and Hecht come to mind - are being careless with the puck around our blueline.

1st period in the books, and we have some passengers tonight; kind of reminds me of game 2 - some guys are thinking "we'll win tonight and close it out Sunday" and aren't giving enough effort.

Need some more desperation and faster puck movement on the PP, and we need some guys to get their a$$ moving to start drawing some penalties and get the PP until out there more.

Finally - Max is absolutely killing me - he has completely reverted to early-season, doing-it-all-myself form and is getting acreless with the puck. Lindy needs to settle him down and get him spreading the puck around ASAP.

  7. Campbell cannot handle the minutes of a top 4 defenseman. Increasing his minutes will hurt the Sabres as much as having to play Fitzpatrick or Janik more. Unfortunately, the Sabres can't get by on just playing McKee, Lydman & Tallinder.

I think you're right about Campbell, we need to see him for what he is - a solid 5/6 guy who will/should make some plays on the PP. we really need to get Teppo or Kalinin back ASAP to take some of the pressure off Lydman, Tallinder & McKee...

  8. I'll say it then - Rory is a problem, I must've seen him cough up the puck, be out of position, or get outskated a hundred times tonight. He just isn't good enough for the game at this level.

I didn't want to single Rory out, b/c I know he is in over his head...if we can get either Kalinin or Teppo back, we can limit his ice time and limit his liability...also I didn't want to single him out b/c even McKee, Lydman and Campbell struggled at times last night.

  9. It is pretty tough for the defense with only five players actually playing.

If we don't get either Numminen or Kalinin back soon, Carolina might wear down our D and we could be in big trouble. Not saying Janik or Rory are the problem tonight, just saying Car is going to keep beating up McKee, Lydman, Campbell & co. until they start turning over the puck all over the place.

  10. They should be friggin EMBARRASSED by their 2nd period performance - there are a whole lot of Sabres who aren't going to want to see the tape of that period.

I hope someone closes the lockerroom door and lights into the team - if you get beat by a better team that's one thing, but getting outshot 16-4 because you aren't paying the price to get the puck out of the zone, that's inexcusable.

    End rant...

Has Thomas Vanek been abducted by aliens?

He was the best Sabre on the ice for most of the 2nd, and that ain't saying much...

  11. Didn't like the 4th goal, but not much he could do on the Forsberg goal - not gonna stop many players in the league when they get a run at a shot from that close, let alone one of the top players in the world...

We have waaaaay too many players that are non-factors tonight, not just Max & Miller - what about Connolly, Drury, Kotalik, Grier...

  12. Sabres need to wake-up!

Can't win in the post-season with this kind of effort, IMHO.

I assume you mean soft in the terms of team "D", correct? Right now Forsberg is getting every bounce to go his way - that puck wasn't even headed for him but it hit someone and bounced right to him in the slot.

There are a few players that need to wake up, and make their presence felt in the 3rd period - Drury and Briere, despite his goal, are both struggling; Dumont, Connolly and Kotalik have been non-factors overall; and Max scares me every time the puck finds his stick in our end.
