I don't think Miller's teams would have been "above average" without Miller.  Ruff's system in those years relied upon Miller being Miller.  Without that, defensemen wouldn't have been able to pinch as they did, and the neutral zone game would have been much more defensive, just for examples.  I don't think the Sabres rode Miller to the semifinals in 06 and 07 the way they did with Hasek in 98 and 99 (including the finals that year), but I also think there is no way they could have played the same freewheeling style in 06 and 07 in front of an average goaltender.

Miller was great.  His only sin is that he wasn't the greatest NHL goalie of all time (Hasek).  This team's identity used to be great goaltending, and that goes back even before Hasek.

Those Miller teams also had good defensemen that were more seasoned than the current Sabres D.

    Numminen, 38. Tallinder, 28. Lydman, 29. Spacek, 32. Even Campbell was 27.

They may have wheeled and dealed a lot, but those D also knew how to play D, and they had a couple C that played good two-way hockey too in Drury and Hecht.

And yes, I agree that Miller was great. He did allow them to take more chances because of how good he was, but in tight games the overall roster was also helpful to him defensively.

I was around for that.  Miller was a great goalie.  The people here calling him average were ridiculous.

It’s interesting to think about, at least to me.

Hasek took below average to average Sabres teams to playoffs and almost a Cup.

Miller took above average teams to playoffs and almost a Cup.

The team has been a basement dweller for over a decade, and everyone wants to blame the goalies. Have some been bad? Yes. But it’s hard to bring a below average team to almost a Cup unless you are Hasek, or even an above average team to almost a Cup unless you are Miller.

None of these goalies will ever be Hasek, and the roster for the last decade plus hasn’t provided room for any of the goalies to be a Miller, either.

People didn’t like Ullmark, they currently don’t like UPL, and they won’t like Levi either unless the team improves by the time he arrives (and even then, they likely won’t like him just like they didn’t like Miller).

I hope he signs soon so people can move on from the “he’s not going to sign” phase to the “he signed but he isn’t going to live up to expectations” phase

Wait until people realize he isn’t Hasek.

Then the pitchforks will be out just like they have been for every Sabres goalie since around 2002.

**signs off with a Miller wtf wave**

    4. (For humor):  what do you expect when you name your kids Caelen, Carson, Cameron, and Caiden?  Just the first and last of those are too confusing.

Makes you wonder about kids named Tage, Kale, Peyton, and Riley.

And possibly kids named after Michael Jordan and Mike Tyson.

The price is probably 2024 1st, someone you don't want to trade, and someone you would prefer not to trade.

    Based on what?

In September 2020, Jake Allen was traded to Montreal for a third-rounder and two sevenths.

At the 2020 deadline, Robin Lehner was sent to Vegas for Malcolm Subban, a prospect and a second-round pick.

And just a couple of weeks before that deadline, the Leafs picked up Jack Campbell (and Kyle Clifford) for Trevor Moore and a couple of third-rounders.

Alex Nedeljkovic, a 25-year-old at the time coming off a Calder finalist season, returned only Jonathan Bernier and a third-rounder to Carolina.

Darcy Kuemper trade to Colorado, they gave up Conor Timmins and a first-round pick.

Why is everyone thinking the Sabres would have to give up a 1st and two high prospects for Hart or Demko or even Saros?

Short answer is he’s Devon Levi, but ready for #1 duty today.  Richter award winner/outstanding in college.

Seasoned two years in the NHL with great numbers on a great team

I am sure he wants to be #1 and Ullmark is in the way. He’s 1B at best and Boston will need to rebuild in his prime.

Being on the B’s helps his numbers the last two years, but my original reasons why this is an attractive spot stand.

Yes, but how good would he be on the Sabres right now?

Would you trade Levi for him straight up?

What if the Sabres threw an offer sheet at Swayman? The cupboard is stocked to make a move like this.  The cost is the cost. Boston would have a hard time committing something like 3.5M to their backup goalie position.

G1 Swayman and G2 UPL for the next 82. Comrie can clean and dry their equipment.
G1 Swayman and G2 Levi for the 82 after that. UPL can be moved before the season to recoup some of the spent assets on Swayman.

Best in the crease after that.

I think a top five goal scoring team with two cornerstone D  for the next decade would be pretty attractive to a goalie.

My question is…how good is Swayman if he’s on a team not named the Bruins? If he was currently playing for a team like the Sabres that do not know how to play team defense and give up lots of odd man rushes, breakaways, and 2 on 0’s? I honestly haven’t seen enough of him to have an opinion.

When some people here had pitchforks out for Ullmark, I pointed out that he was a good G on a bad team, and would look excellent on a team like Boston. Prophecy fulfilled.

I feel similarly about UPL. I think he’s a good G who will look a LOT better if/when the Sabres learn to play team defense, or when he ends up with a different team that does. I know there’s some detractors on here when it comes to UPL, but I feel he is better than you think.

It seems like there are people on here who can’t see the forest for the trees. Expecting a Comrie or Hart or Demko or insert-any-name to walk onto this roster and play like Hasek is unreasonable, until the team learns to consistently play team defense.

Has anyone ever seen an uninjured goalie replaced with 10 minutes left in the game?

It was 5-3 with just over 10 minutes left.

Maybe it was "cruel" to Comrie. It also would have been cruel to the backup to put him there.

I’ve seen other goalies pulled after the 7th, 8th goals, yes.

This is the type of thing that led to Roy telling the Habs he would never play for them again. With any luck, Comrie told the Sabres the same thing tonight.
