  1. I think you may be failing to appreciate a critical fact: if a FA has a choice between playing in Buffalo (or for any other terrible team) for $4MM or not playing in the NHL, 90%+ of the time that FA will take the $$ and play for the lousy team.

Also true, I do not deny this fact. I question it's merit however, given the youth on the team, would management really want to bring in players that are here merely for a pay check? Is it just me, or do others believe that is a bad example to be giving the youth of the team, especially when they see this and their 3rd contract comes up, or 2nd, depending on the talent level? I see all kinds of bad things happening if the team went that route contract wise.

His "plan" is to draft as many 1st and 2nd round players as possible. They will install veteran players as they see fit or as they think are needed to guide those players along. So while we will continue to be the youngest team in the NHL, we will also continue to sign or trade for veteran players who can come in and teach the kids. These veterans players will be overpaid because quite frankly we will have to to get them here but at the same time it helps our cap floor. Couple that with kids coming off entry level deals this year, next year and specifically in 3 years and you have lots of ways to reach the cap floor.

For example: Steve Ott is currently on the team. Now it sounds like he wants out but lets say we offer him 5mil for 4yrs and Pittsburgh offers him 3.5mil for 3years. That is 20million versus 10.5million. That would make anyone pause for a moment.

    See above.
  2. Sabres could easily go the 2011 Florida route in the summer.

After gutting their team for picks at the deadline, Dale Tallon acquired Versteeg, Upshall, Fleischmann, Jovanovski, Theodore, Goc and Bergenheim and took on a big salary dump in Brian Campbell. Essentially, they overpaid a bunch of second- and third-raters to hold the fort until their kids made the jump.

Hasn't exactly worked out for them, but Freeman is right — opportunities will be there for Buffalo, or any team with lots of cap space.

This is true. However, how many of those players signed and how many came via trade?

First, there are plenty of FAs who won't find a $4MM chair when the music stops in July.

Second, there are plenty of overpriced guys under contract whose teams will want to be rid of them -- so the Sabres can pick them up in trade.

I agree that no one is going to trade for Stafford or Leino -- but that doesn't mean the Sabres couldn't buy out or waive either or both of them.

Ennis and Foligno are both RFA, not UFA.

Yes, it's possible, I'm merely of the opinion it's improbable is all nfreeman.

As for the UFA to RFA status, this is correct, but I'm hoping Moulson continues the chemistry with Hodge and Ennis and re-signs here as well. That should help off set the cap floor thoughts I had. I'm more concerned about 2 years out than next year. Especially considering the high draft pick were sure to get and the subsequent injection of more youth into the line up. I'm not opposed to it all, and I'm sure the cap floor is already being considered by DR, I'm just thinking out loud on just how he plans to do it is all.

  3. There are plenty of overpaid players in the NHL who the Sabres can pick up if they need to reach the floor -- and 90% of them will produce more than Stafford.

Great, name me a few that would be willing to come to Buffalo at 4 mil or more a season. I doubt you'll find many, and in my opinion, any for that matter with Buffalo going into full rebuild mode.

Hate to say it, but Stafford and Leino aren't going anywhere anytime soon IMHO.

    Exactly.

The Sabres do not need to worry about the cap floor.

Your right, they don't, because of Stafford and Leino type contracts. Yet, once again, I think both of you are way off base. No player is coming to the Sabres at 4 mil or more a season and more productive than Stafford or Leino, if they are more productive, there are other destinations that aren't in full rebuild mode to go to.

I think your both wrong, it will prove to be much more difficult than you think to replace those contracts to reach the cap floor if you move them.

  4. F Vanek, I like Moulson better. :P

(I'm only half kidding, I always really liked Matt Moulson.)

Vanek never seemed like the "heart and soul" guy who wills his team to a championship through blood, sweat, and tears. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just never got the impression he was that sort of player. Talented for sure, but if he wants out, he wants out. Build around guys who want to be a Sabre.

I like you Potato. You say it the way it is.

What impresses me about Moulson, even in this 1 outting so far, he appears to want to be a game changer just by viewing his desire to win. I never saw that in Vanek.

I'd like them to keep Moulson, and keep that Hodgson, Moulson, Ennis line together. Then build another line with a couple of all star players. And do it in 2 to 3 seasons at the most.

But my wants put aside for a moment, I really like Moulson on this team.

  5. One thing I'd like to say though.. we're really quick to kill Darcy but he BETTER get his props in 5-10 years when our forwards consist of some combination of Hodgson, Foligno, Ennis, Grigorenko, Girgensons, Larsson, Flynn, Armia, Catenacci, Bailey, Compher, Hurley, Baptiste and our defense has Pysyk, Ehrhoff, McCabe, Risto, Nikita, Myers, McNabb

This is before we throw in the ridiculous amount of prospects we're getting the next 2 years and whoever of these guys we trade to bring in pieces that fit the mold of our team during this time, we got a lot to be excited about just now right now.

I don't think he trades for anything significant. I believe he's waiting for the 2015 UFA class to complete the rebuild. Patrick Kane.

And they'll have the cap space to achieve it as well.

  6. On a brighter note, this may very well indeed, end up as the worst Sabres season in franchise history, stats wise. But it also could be the beginning of the building of a championship team and dynasty. It all depends on what the Sabres organization does with their newly found cellar dweller status. Only time will tell.

  7. Great idea. Let's all fall in love with Sam Reinhart. That should really pay off when we draft about 5-6 spots after he's gone. :(

Wouldn't that be the Sabres luck to :)

Come in dead last lose the lottery, pick 4th over all

Come in dead last next season, lose the lottery pick 7th overall

Come in dead last the following season, lose the lottery pick 3rd overall (hey, were getting closer)

    :w00t:

  8. Naw thy might get better. Keep Darcy on until McDavid. Then bye bye.

well, at least we both didn't need the Jim Beam to get us through tonights game :)

Do you really think we'll be the worst team back-to-back to score McDavid?

    -no sarcasm, genuinely asking

Yes, I do. It's a matter of percentages and probabilities.

99.9% of me sees Darcy Regier at the helm as the GM next season.

Probability of finishing last again due to the above statement, 100%

  9. Kaleta could go, I could care less.

Yes he brings a PK quality, many teams have players like this.

Yes he draws penalties, many teams have players like this.

Yes he plays with blood and guts, some teams have a player like this.

Yes he takes penalties that are unnecessary, some teams have a player like this.

Yes he doesn't answer the bell when called upon, some teams have a player like this.

    He's expendable, not disposable.

He can be replaced with a smarter player for sure, but as for now he serves a purpose, we keep him until a better option emerges.

  10. The problem is that we are talking about prospects here with the Sabres who will not have the luxury of stepping into a situation where they will be afforded time to find their way. It's a different scenario to flood the roster with rookies than it is adding a rookie or two to a roster of established NHL talent.

Unfortunately, you are correct and it's something that I think on as the new season approaches. How are these young kids going to get acclimated to the NHL game in a smooth transition with so many of them so young?

My fingers are crossed that we do find a diamond in the rough or 2, but I also realize with all of this youth being injected at one time it is going to take a couple of season for chemistry to be found.

But hey, I'd be more than pleasantly surprised if they started kicking ass right out of the gate due to pure compete hunger within themselves.

  11. It used to appear Kassian had that fire in his eye. I'm not sure what happened along the way. They talk about consistency and maturity n shite. It appears now that Zemgus has that same fire plus a work ethic and desire that I'm not sure I remember them saying about Zack. Man I hope he's the real deal.

The NHL competition level is what happened to Kassian, and it will happen to all of our prospects, sooner or later.

I can fully understand the desire to view prospects as "NHL ready" or "prepared to play the role at the NHL level" but the truth of the matter is the compete level league wide from the AHL on through to the CHL, USHL and various other leagues both here and over seas isn't nearly as intense, quick and skilled as the NHL level.

Don't expect greatness from any of our current prospects, it'll be a huge let down, to all fans. Instead, keep your expectations tempered with the reality of transitioning to a much faster game with highly skilled and experienced players who will undoubtedly expose weaknesses in the young kids game across the board.

In short, we are in for a heavy learning curve, let's not get ahead of ourselves here......................

  12. How is it not close to second line potential? According to Ronnie, Foligno has the potential to be one of the best power forwards in the NHL. He may have just been pumping his tires, but Foligno has at least second line potential. Girgensons definitely has second line potential and I really don't know much about Larsson yet. Wild fans certainly seemed to think he could be at least a second liner some day.

Also namedropping your own user name isn't a quick way to get sand out of your monster truck.

Bolded section put aside for a moment, each of the players mentioned project to be more in line with defensive forwards with some (some being the key word) offensive upside. I'd like to see the Sabres roll 2 solid scoring lines, and since it was suggested the aforementioned players could make a 2nd line my opinion differs given what I've read on each player to date combined with watching Foligno this past season. In short, merely opinion on my part.

Back to the bolded comment, I find the sand in my "monster truck" helps add the necessary weight needed to navigate the slick roads of Western New York.

  13. He sold a majority of his company's land holdings to a huge International company.

That company will, no doubt, be doing the drilling.

He sold his company, not just the land holdings, to Shell Oil.

There is much more than just land holdings in that deal. There is years of Marcellus Shale data. And it's worth high dollars.

I've read the entire thread since I first posted it, and it's still legit in my view. Today, I feel more sorry for Ruff than anyone else. Sure, his voice might have grown stale and players weren't responding to him as in the past. But there is no doubt in my mind that year after year he got the most out of mediocre rosters put together by Regier. How Lindy must feel today knowing he was let go after bleeding Sabre blue and gold for over half his life.

Meanwhile, the Wizard of Odd in charge of building the team finally pulls the plug on his futile roster -- and is near complete in dismantling the "leadership core" we've endured since the Drury-Briere bloodletting. Truth is, there was no leadership core left in place after '07. Regier's faith in Roy-Pomminstein-Connolly-Vanek as players ready to fill the void hastened our decline to mediocrity. Then Lucic made the ultimate mockery of the hollow core left behind.

Ruff was just as much a part of the problem throughout the years as Regier will continue to be.

Pegula has little to do with this to be honest, he's not getting a fair shake from the fans that have complete apathy right now.

You cannot seriously judge him as an owner after a mere 2 years, let him get his feet wet. He stated he wanted the hockey dept. to make mistakes, that is how they will learn, but it is him that is learning, as an owner. And apparently the hard way.

  14. very kind. thanks.

i'm not so sure whether the law is on the books. Is it?

If it's gonna be a crime, we oughta have degrees.

    Just spit-balling:

Meddling: An Owner*** is guilty of meddling in the first degree when he or she makes any Personnel Decision concerning a Player without regard to or in direct contravention of the advice of the Owner's General Manager. An Owner is guilty of meddling in the second degree when he or she makes any Personnel Decision concerning a Player and in the course of making such Personnel Decision requests and receives the advice of the Owner's General Manager. [And so forth]

***(The inish-capped words would be defined terms.)

Agreed Aud, there has to be a defined parameter on the charge so the jurors can give due consideration of both the prosecution as well as the defenses case.

I do have a question however.......

Will the defendant be testifying in his own defense?

If So, I believe a tweet to Mr. Pegula's daughter informing her of these proceedings and offering her father a chance to inter-act with the fan base would just straight out be the bomb, as long as all posters can behave themselves.
