  1. To Drane's comments on Risto's physicality.

I loved the battle he and Lemieux had going on all night.

I loved that Lemieux targeted the biggest, best defenceman on the opposing team and went out of his way to make him miserable.

I loved how Risto reacted. He gave as good as he got and used the adversity to elevate his game.

I loved how after the game they embraced and talked for a long time going off the ice.

This is what this camp should be about. This is what I wanted to see.

  2. Watching college kids on the driving range at Springville CC and projecting out to how they'll play at the Masters.

Sorry, not buying into any of this. Wake me up when they're doing it on MSG and at MSG (against the Rangers, not during a Billy Joel concert).

I get excited because these kids are all we've got and there is no point being a fan without hope.

    But PA's are wise words.

Risto looked like Rob Blake out there.

Has he grown that much, or is it because of who he was playing against?

  3. The 2013 draft may go down as day that turned the Buffalo Sabres around.

In the first round it looks like we got two NHL defencemen each of which has first-pairing upside.

In Carrier, Fasching, Compher and Baptiste, we got four guys who are very likely to play in the NHL.

Bailey and Hurley are not sure things, but they have middle-six skill sets.

Possler, Peterson, Florentino and Malone are longshots but each has outplayed where he was drafted.

Most drafts are successful if you get two NHLers. It's hard to say where any of these players top out, but we could end up with a third of a team.

  4. Surprise development of the year:

Grigorenko gets it, earning praise for his effort, dedication and coachability in Rochester

Zadorov pouts after not making the big club, gets criticized for being undisciplined and going through the motions in junior, and whispers start about him wanting a trade, or heading to the KHL.

  5. I think Murray has shown he is not solely focused on size, just that he sees it a a necessary ingredient that the organization lacked.

Had Draisaitl been the pick over Reinhart, I may have been concerned about an over emphasis, but he wasn't and I'm not.

Darcy thought you could win without size. Tim disagrees and will likely continue to add size whenever there is an opportunity.

But I think overall, you will find ZFG over individual traits or lack thereof as long as a player can play.

  6. The NHL talent is lacking, but the system has a lot of possibilities at pretty much every level and position.

This is what it looks like at the moment:

    NHL veterans:

    Moulson/Ennis/Stafford

    Foligno/Hodgson/Stewart

    Flynn/Girgensons/Gionta

    Kaleta/McCormick/Mitchell

    Ellis

    Myers/Gorges

    Meszaros/

    Weber/

    Enroth

    Neuvirth

    AHLers looking for NHL work:

    Larsson/Dalpe/Adam

    Deslauriers/Grigorenko/Armia

    Carrier/Varone/Catenacci

    Sundher/Schaller/Samuels-Thomas

    Kea/Jacobs

    Ristolainen/Pysyk

    McCabe/Ruhwedel

    Strachan/Bagnall

    Gauthier/Austin

    Hackett

    Lieuwen

    Makarov

    Juniors/college/overseas:

    Lemieux/Reinhart/Fasching

    Baptiste/Compher/Bailey

    Karabacek/Hurley /Cornel

    Willman/Malone/Possler

    Zadorov

    Martin/Florentino

    Ullmark

    Johanson

    Peterson

  7. Maybe I'm totally wrong but I'd be shocked if Schaller saw NHL duty...ever. It would definitely be an indictment of the other AHL prospects who are supposed to be vastly more talented (Armia, Grigs).

You've seen Schaller more than I have, but I liked his play down the stretch and in the playoffs a lot. He's got size and edge and defensive awareness.

He will never be more than a guy at the bottom edges of a roster, but I can see him having a Matt Ellis type career.

And I think he gets a taste this year over Ellis when McCormick goes down with his inevitable injury.

Armia and Grigs aren't going to get the call to get fourth-line minutes.

As for me, I think Carrier is the bust-out guy from that 11-15 pool. I think he might just have it.

Baker also notes that the farm is starting to get light on D. I don't want Murray to pull a "reverse Darcy." I hope to see some balance.

Yep, at least two of the next year's five high picks need to be blue liners.

And I don't think I am being a homer when I say guys like Larsson and Cornel are top 10 players on the prospect lists for at least half the league. We are bound to have more hits due to the sheer number of players in the system.

To take that a step further, our number 30 prospect, Tim Schaller, has a decent shot of getting some at action in the NHL this year. Our number 21 prospect, Deslauriers, will probably be an NHL regular.

  9. This is it ladies and gentlemen. This camp a big deal. This is the crucible where it starts.

There will be so many good prospects in camp Monday that the critical mass is there to create an environment where talented prospects will be forced to compete and compete hard to earn their place in the pecking order.

Zemgus will be setting the standard for talented grit guys like Compher and Baptiste to match.

If Brendan Lemieux wants to be an NHL power forward any time soon he is going to have to be better than Carrier or Fasching.

Who is the guy who will be in the wheelhouse on offence: Samson or Mikhail? Joel Armia, you are being chased by Justin Bailey.

Nikita, Jake, Mark and Rasmus? There's only room for two of you right now.

Nobody has earned the label goalie of the future yet. Which one of you is it going to be?

Cornel, Schaller, Kea, Catenacci, Samuels-Thomas, Gauthier, Florentino, etc., look at guys in front of you.

You want it, you better bring your lunch bucket.

This is one of the key components of the plan: bringing a bunch of young talent together at the same time, let them fight it out. Let them bond. Let the strong survive. I can't wait.

Anyone going to watch and post some reports?
