As always?  Are you here often?  Often enough that you think I mistake the NHL for the NFL?  Or are you here 30 times in the last 15 years as the stats indicate?

If you don't want to be treated like a jerk, don't come at me like one.

Come everyday and lurk. Just don't need to post every thought I have for everyone to hear. Every once in awhile, I feel compelled. Congrats, you compelled me with your genius.

We're not in a vacuum.  We're here and now.

You are making the assumption the 13 gets either of those players. Or...maybe it can get them, but they won't commit to signing long-term. If that is the case...and it could very well be - Michkov would be an awesome get. BPA. This ain't the NFL.

I think it’s probably where you need to be.

I understand why some people’s jaws drop, but I’d do it.

    This is all true.

Thing is, Power doesn’t need to be a Norris Trophy candidate for the contract to make sense.

$8 million right now, meaning as of today, would make him the 17th highest paid defenceman in the league.

3 or 4 years from now, it may not be in the top 30. Nine years from now, when he’s 29, I’d be surprised if it’s top 50.

Yeah, he might be overpaid the next year or two, but he might be underpaid for 5 or 6 after that, even if he “only” turns into a Thomas Chabot level player.

I have no problem betting on Power being a top 50 NHL defenceman for the majority of the deal and $8-million reflects that.

I really think it’s just the appropriate manifestation of what powered the Mule and Tage signings: if you’ve seen enough to believe, lock him up.

Top 30 or 50 would indicate he is a first line pairing on most NHL teams...not sure I am willing to bet that myself yet.

If Power signs a 3 year bridge, I think that 5-5.5 is just about right.  If he signs an 8 year deal, I think you are looking at $8M+.  Don’t think anyone is advocating that it would take $8M per to sign him to a 3 year bridge.

For me, just not ready to give him 8 million a year at this point as he is not an 8 million dollar player. No guarantee he turns out to be that valuable - I would rather he prove it - and if it costs us 10 million later...and that is a big if even if he becomes an all star... then we can deal with the price.

  5. I am shocked how many people are good with signing him at over 8 million a year. Heck, Dahlin only got 3 years at 6 million per - and he had some really nice offensive seasons in his pocket.

I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when he gets a 3 year, 5 to 5.5 million a year contract.

  6. If there was an option for: Yes, with extension - that is the option I would have selected. No otherwise.

Not uncommon for goalies to play their prime years between 30-34. My lord, Tim Thomas didn't start playing until he was 30. Hasek? Age is not the concern.

The amount of money is the only concern - but if you pay him - you really do not have to invest heavily into defense beyond Power and Dahlin. You can live with guys like Joker and Stillman filling out your bottom 3. Or even get aging D vets that make few mistakes and move the puck well out of the zone - but not contributing a whole lot else.

I do not recall the sabres of the 2000's rolling out high octane defensive players. They had Miller - a goalie that allowed them to play aggressive offensively.

Love Levi - but he is extremely unproven. Give Connor for the next 5-7 years - they will make a cup run with the offense they have.

I think playoff success, especially Cup(s) is highly valued by the HOF committee. International success adds to a resume. Individual awards catch their attention too.

Tkachuk’s deepest run was winning two rounds. 89 playoff games in 20 years. His kids are keeping his name in the news so he may make it.

Roenick’s big mouth is probably holding him back. He never won anything but played 150+ playoff games.

Turgeon’s playoff experience is pretty weak, just over 100 games in 20 years.

Verbeek did win a Cup but he wasn’t a big part of it. His playoff stats are meh.

Skinner is not a HOFer. The only way to get considered would be for him to keep his current level of play going for 5 more years, win a Cup or two and collect a Conn Smythe in one of them. If he is a good playoff player when he finally gets there we won’t care if he makes the HOF or not.

I would make one small correction to this - Roenick's big mouth (I would classify as outspoken) coupled with him being an American is what is holding him back. There is zero reason for him not to be in the Hall of Fame. It is pure silliness.

Wawrow had a good question but kinda fumbled it. "You guys had almost 20 million in unused cap space you will never see again, had obvious warts going back to the earliest parts of the offseason, and got within 2 points of the playoffs. There surely was a path that could have leveraged some of that for two measly points in a way that wouldn't "compromise the future." Do you agree that this might represent a wasted opportunity?" A reasonable question I think

it is a bit shortsighted though, imo. 20 million not used has other implications. if they spent 5 of it - does it mean it costs them 5 for the next year and year after? multi year contracts do that - so the question is incomplete and missing context. i see it as 20 million they can use on upgrading scouting and coaching staff, ahl, office staffing, etc...

    or money for the yacht.

I wish Adams said what he really thought of Johnson. He didn’t look too impressed with the whole situation while he tried to explain where everything stood.

I just finished watching - and got the same vibe. Used a key word as well - we think he is a good 'prospect'. If I had to guess, they had no intention of letting him play NHL minutes this year - and they want him in the AHL for one year minimum.

If he can find a team with less depth - or has a philosophy of growing players in the NHL - then he is going to gravitate there.

But seemed clear - Adams does not have strong conviction that he is NHL ready in 23-34.

Agree. Casey is a top-6 forward. Get CM on Cozens' wing along with Quinn and he'll be a regular 60 point player and be the perfect complement skill-wise to the other two. And provide a solid option to step into the center slot if needed.

For me, I'm using other assets to acquire a (badly needed) 4D. And lots of other parts are available for a third line.

Agreed - plus, the team should have cap room to sign a 4D as well - so maybe can get one without giving up assets. Lot's of ways we can get a 4D without moving CM.

The flaw in this argument is portraying Casey as a “3rd line guy”.

A better argument would be to acknowledge him as the team’s 5th forward: it’s reflected in his ice time and it’s reflected in his production. Maybe the kids will eventually push past him, but right now they haven’t and it’s not particularly close.

So glad someone finally said this - the 3C thing does not apply as he is clearly a top 6 forward. Maybe everyone fell in love with the Cozen, Quinn & Peterka line so they pigeon holed him - but truth is - Casey is ahead of both Quinn and Peterka (although I believe Quinn has a good chance of passing him next year, or the year after).

With Kulich being most likely 2-4 years away - Savoie being 2-4 years away - and Peterka looking more like a middle 6 player...signing Casey should be a priority.

4 years at 4.5 is a no brainer. If he is willing to six years...with cap increases - I wouldn't be upset with 5.5-6 million for him. 60 point forwards that can play C & W and line slide are very very valuable to have...and his teammates love him.

  12. What is overall grade for the season?

B            Fun, Competitive, Likeable (A's are for playoff teams!)

What grade would you give Adams and Granato (including his staff)?

B             Well done overall. Like to see Granato in game coaching step; especially with line matching - we were spoiled by Ruff. Adams was good - this summer is key to telling us what kind of long-term GM he really is. Top 4 D - Good Goalie - PK specialist F/C.

What grade would you give the Forwards, the Defense and the Goaltenders?

    A-   Forwards

C     Defense (Dahlin, Powers and Samuelsson saved this one from being a D- or F)

D     I believe the D made them look worse than they are...but results are results - and statistically they were below average.

What grade would you give the Power Play and the Penalty Kill?

B    PP was mostly good, not dominant

D-  Not a good PK...at all. Candidly, I do not know if it is players or coaching...but they are not close to being lockdown yet.

    Who is your MVP?

Tage Thompson          - doesn't get hurt, we are looking at 100+ points. This team lived off of his line most of the season.

    Who is your ROY?

Owen Power                 - not even close. We are looking at a 60-80 point defenseman who can also shut people down in his own end within 2 - 3 years.

Who is your MIP (most improved player)?

Dylan Cozens              - went from a 13 goal, half point player to a probable 30 goal, point a game player within a snapping of the finger.

    Who is your unsung hero?

Casey Mittlestadt         - I always thought he was good, and saw him as a .5 to .7 point a game player. That is pretty good in the NHL. But since a lot (not all) really want to see him shipped out - I have to give him the award. Otherwise, I would say Girgs. Dude comes to play every night; Stone hands and all.

  13. Team has too much talent offensively - and a solid 2nd pairing Dman and Depth 3rd pairing Dman from making 100 point noise next year. Not wanting to bank on a kid that has never had a full season grind of the NHL. I would love if they brought in a Goalie that makes Levi fight for even 40 games next year - and winner take all the following year. Goalie prospects, especially 21 year old goalie prospects, are not guarantee.

Boy, full marks to Adams on this one. Looking like it’ll be his most impactful move (..and it’s not on an island). An excellent talent analysis and projection by him and his team. To add, I don’t want to get ahead of it and assume he’ll be so good over so many games next year that there won’t be a learning curve as he adjusts to the large workload of a full season, though (And shooters adjust to him), as it’s tough to extrapolate small sample sizes, as we’ve seen. So my preference, in a year where we really gotta see playoffs, would be to add a competent vet backup, if at all possible, to spell starter Levi when he needs rest. Not a comment on confidence in Levi - even the team with whoever has the best goalie in the league needs a capable back up in today’s game, no two ways about it if you have expectations - and I just have none in UPL and Comrie. If anything, Levi’s play has increased that feeling. A back-up addition should honestly be the easy part given how good Levi looks to be, at this time.

I agree with your thoughts regarding learning curve of a full season being a very real thing the team needs to contend with. A full season grind in major league sports is no joke - between playing against the elite night in and night out - extensive travel - media obligations - and newfound money & freedom - it is a lot to take on.

All that said, I would take what you said one step further...I bring in a vet that has an expectation of playing 40 - if not 50 games next year. Levi plays between 25-35 next year - and 35-40 the following year - before taking over as a full time starter.

He is young for a goalie, and a very heady individual. From all accounts I have read - this dude is a creature of habit - and it is hard to stay insulated in the NHL. It will take time. Just not ready to throw this kid in for a 50+ game workload next year...IMO

I used to buy 1 jersey and at least 4-5 other things every year. I remember when I worked my college job how I would save up for stuff. Going almost 8 years with only 2 hats was a big deal for me but hey, you don't care.

i am sorry. you are not into self deprecation - i will be more careful.

From 2016-2023 I didn't buy a single jersey for this team. The only 2 pieces of merch I bought in that entire timeframe was 2 hats. That's what I'm gonna do and continue to do until this team makes the playoffs.

In March I got a Biron goathead because of nostalgia which broke my streak but that is going to be my only purchase until playoffs return to the Sabres.

........and then there was this really cool sweatshirt I bought back in November, but it doesn't really count because half was paid for with a gift card. There was also the Hasek jersey, but I only bought that because of the Hasek ceremony. Can guarantee you I wont do that again.

Also grabbed a pair of sabres sandals, but I only wear those at the beach, so not counting those either. The Owen Power t-shirt...well, I was just excited on draft day and made an impulse purchase.

Other than that...I am not buying any sabres merch! I mean it!

FWIW, I know someone who has covered the team for some time.  Trust me or don't, not my concern.

Terry was against taking Russian players for years and demanded the O'Reilly trade after those end-of-season comments.  He also pushed for the Skinner contract extension.   Before that, he was spending wildly, chose to retain Regier, and then had the fiasco with LaFontaine, while seeing Murray and Botterill get hired and fail.

I am appreciating that, under Adams, ownership has authorized spending ~130M on Thompson, Cozens, and Samuelsson.  And I fully expect Dahlin to get a significant contract as well shortly.

Sure, there's a lot left to be done and leaving the arena after the Dallas game reinforced that.  It's good to see them spending to retain and not being a farm system for the large market teams now.

Whether you know someone or not - this was my 'suspicion' all along with the Pegula's. To add to it - even the salary Eichel got was too much too early. I also suspect that it was Pegula who pushed the captaincy on Eichel. This is Kim and Terry's team, 100% - and it has been run in a wildly immature way to back that sentiment up.

The difference now - McDermott and Beane are having success 'seemingly' calling the shots; and it has translated over to the Pegula learning to trust the same process on the Hockey side. Remember - after Rex Ryan - Head Coaching candidates were telling the Bills they will come only if they have control. Period. Before we give Pegula too much credit on McDermott - he hired him for personal reasons - against the will of his management team. Terry got lucky. His gushing over McDermott's wrestling history was the biggest eye roll speak in history. But maybe it was that bond that allowed him to trust McDermott to be the guy calling the shots...? IDK

Lot of words to say...I hope my guess is right in that he is letting KA and Donny G control the ship more than previous GM's and Coaches - because the Pegula's stink at it.

  18. That is a great question. As of now, he is the 32nd highest paid player in the league (annually). If we just look at his last two years, he is 46th in goals scored, and 37th in total points this year.

Last year, he was 34th in goals scored, and 70th in total points.

We could say he is a top 50 point producer...top 40 goal producer in the league.

His corsi the last two years is quite impressive. He is a well liked, and good teammate. He is a bit pesty on the ice.

    9 million...probably not. 7.5 million...feels more like it.

So I would argue he is overpaid - but not to the degree that it hurts the franchise - or requires all of us to gather our pitchforks.

  19. Why?

Yeah - I am not seeing how this would hold up a 'financial' negotiation. There is not much to read into here, in my opinion:

Based on his production, the Sabres Mngt believe he probably falls in the approximate 9 million a year range. They want to negotiate based on 'what is'.

Eichel and his agent, wisely, want to negotiate on what they believe 'will be' - so they are probably asking for 10-11 million a year.

The reasons the negotiation has probably been so cordial; is that both sides understand the other sides position. So it is simple - if Jack put up a 0.75 - 0.80 point per game season, AND they fall short of the playoffs, he is a 9 million dollar player. Maybe 8.5.

If he averages a point a game - and serves as a winning force getting them into the playoffs, or close to it, then he gets his 10.5 or higher.

Both sides feel like they won with the latter outcome - and I am sure both sides will feel like they lost if the former happens.
