So offer him $950k.  It still doesn't break the bank and they've sent guys wtih bigger contracts to Ra-cha-cha.

And you realize that unless he resides in NYS for 6 months and a day is he liable for the full contract getting taxed as a NYS resident.  Taxes aren't necessarily a fully apples to apples comparison as each jurisdiction they play in have their own tax laws that the accountants are only too happy to figure out.

Again, said overall they did fine on this, but personally would like to have seen them give him a bigger offer.  Why?  Because he's the only guy besides Dahlin that Power has played with and had the pairing look good.  That's important.  You find something that works, keep it.

Btw, unless he wants to live in Detroit proper, his tax rate would be 5.45% in Michigan.  And his NYS tax rate would be 6.85%.    So, yeah, $25k would cover the extra ~$10k he'd pay in tax.

You're being pretty naïve, thinking that you can just dangle $25K over whatever to Bernard-Docker's agent to get him to come back after you let him go to free agency. It doesn't work like that.

That's why the statement was "then run the rest of it the way they did."  If he won't sign, don't make the QO but tell him the $900k will be available for a time, but the Sabres will be looking elsewhere on what they're going to do.  Let the agent test FA, and either you end up with him as it appears the best offer he got was Detroits or the agent gets Detroit to up its offer a smidge.

Either way, its a non-loss.  Paying him $1.7MM would've been the loss.

And, again, they handled it reasonably.  It's just frustrating that they got rid of the 1 guy we know of (besides Dahlin) that can play next to Power.  And if Kesselring ends up Power's partner and they have chemistry; well, the Sabres saved $900k.  It's just that seems to be a pretty low cost insurance policy.

Lol. You think $25,000 is enough of a carrot? What are taxes in Michigan?  4.75%? They are 9.65% for that income level in New York. So $875K is more money in Detroit than $900K is in Buffalo.

Close.  The CORRECT thing would've been to offer him $900k before QO's needed to be submitted.  Then run the rest of it the way they did.  But they really can't be faulted on this one.

But he has to accept that offer! His agent knew he was due for arbitration. It would have been agent malpractice to sign for that before QO's

They would have been required to pay him and could not walk away. That’s why he wasn’t given a QO.

“The decision of the arbitrator is binding, although teams can walk away from an award in excess of $3.5 million if the salary arbitration hearing was player-elected (note: that $3.5 million figure is adjusted annually by the same percentage as the increase in average league salary, so the walk away limit is probably several $100,000 higher than $3.5 million this time around).”

The Sabres actually thought this out and did the correct thing. Gee.

I’ll say this, he articulated the moves and the freeing up cap space, very well. He explained what could have happened had they not made more room as some team would’ve hooped them with a Bo offer sheet. Now they have the space to take it in the chin if need be and quite possibly have another team set his next contract. If he’s not offer sheeted he can try to sign him longer term and is happy to keep him. It’s definitely showed some foresight which I’m not so sure he’s used in the past.

    His JBD explanation was excellent.

Not a lot of teams got better yesterday. I wouldn’t say Buffalo worse. They definitely got harder to play against, on paper. Hopefully he can swing a few more moves to help this team get further along. Defensively we are better. That’s not a bad thing.

If they can prevent the same number of goals JJ scored, it's a wash.

As I said in another thread I would do Andersson, if you can get him to waive, and a 2nd for Byram with the condition that the pick becomes a 3rd if Andersson re-signs.

Adams should be GMing like he won’t be here next year. Andersson gives you an instant top of the league pairing with Dahlin and if they make the Playoffs maybe you get him extended. It’s worth the risk in my opinion.

Would you do it if Andersson won't resign here, making him a one season rental? And what would you offer? Byram one-for-one? Andersson + ?

Byram's a weird one - i truly don't know what his value *is*, *should be*, or what we as fans have for him.

Once he leaves it'll come to you.

Jones, Metsa, Rathbone, Timmins, Docker, Brannstrom, Poolman, Clague, Bryson, Davies, Prow, Cecconi, Bartkowski, Priskie, Stillman, Davidson, Clifton, Hagg, Pysyk, Butcher, Wolanin, Lyubushkin, Fogarty and the immortal Matt Irwin.

    24 of them!

    In 5 years!

And most of them actually played for the Sabres!

I mean maybe it’s unfair to include Clifton and Lyubushkin, but none of these guys advanced to the 2nd pair and all of them were healthy scratches, if their NHL careers continued at all after Buffalo.

Finding an NHL defenceman on the border of an NHL career and ending it seems to be Kevyn’s signature move.

What does that have to do with Allen and my “alleged” comments about him? You are so worried about shitting all over the fanbase, you have yourself confused.   Not sure why I even try with you.   Impossible to converse with a super fan like yourself when you are on a pedestal so high above the average poster.

I will resist the temptation going forward.

    Let's review:

    1) You rhetorically ask if the current goalie tandem is any better than any former tandems. You then blame Adams for the problem.

    2) I point out that teams generally don't trade quality goalies because they are so valuable.

    3) You deny saying what you said and you insult me, bringing up the fanbase when they were not part of the conversation. (Typical deflection move when you are losing an argument.)

It's ironic how you hate every move Adams makes yet you can't name a better one. What goalie that was out there is demonstrably better? Demko? Stayed in Vancouver. Allen? Stayed in NJ. Since you are so certain of who is good and who isn't, it should be an easy question to answer. Who would you have signed? I'll wait.

You are assuming. It is not a bad thing. But, think of it this way. Could a defensive tandem of Dahlin and Byram handle a cup final against Florida? Let me help you here..... NOT A CHANCE!! A team's goal is not to just make a playoffs, it is to win the cup. I have zero problem with him staying but you are also losing your biggest chip to bring in a top 6 forward (Not that i think KA is going to do that anyways). If he stays i am good with that. Our defense is definitely better with him i believe. The question is....... is making the goaltending and defense better gets this team to the playoffs? I have no faith in KA making the offensive and PP side better.

Who do you think you can get for Byram in trade? I'm just curious because everyone talks about getting that magical top 6 player for him. Maybe, just maybe, no one at that level has been offered yet.
