  1. It's tough to think of our system as no.1 when we don't have any blue chips up front.

How would other systems be ranked if the 18 and 19 year olds they already have in the NHL were included?

The Sabres have a ton to like; they just need some kingpins to put on the first line.

This is the biggest concern with our lot of potentials. We seem to have many possible 2nd line players and definitely 3rd line players but we don't seem to have those players that are truly talented and can be considered 1st line talent. This is why the tank is so important this year and next. Hoping that we finish dead last again next year we will two picks in the top two plus whatever the Isles pick becomes. And just maybe Murray can turn another player, Myers/Ehroff/etc. into a 1st at this years draft. Maybe we can turn these picks into possible 1st line players.

  2. To abandon the tank you'd need to replace Pegula and Murray. It would be pretty simple after that.

McDavid or any other single player will not get the team a Cup. But McDavid/Eichel may be the star player that every team needs to be the best. The Sabres have an opportunity to get that star player next year. Then all of your other draft choices, trades and FAs make up the team that is able to compete for the Cup.

In order for the Sabres to position themselves to get McDavid/Eichel next year we are talking about 10-15 wins less than if they made the playoffs. I'll trade 10-15 wins for the chance to draft McDavid/Eichel.

I just watched Kane make Ehrhoff and Ruhwedel look bad on the first goal tonight. That is the kind of player that McDavid/Eichel are expected to become.

  3. I agree that this is a very exciting time to watch the Sabres. Yes they don't win much on the ice but we are watching the dismantling of a team and the rebuilding of it again. The chance to draft first this year and maybe next year. And we are 10-15 fewer wins next year from watching the Sabres possibly drafting one of the best players to come out in several years. I just don't think 10-15 more wins next year is worth missing out on that possibility.

Hold the line. The tank is on one more year. Stay the course.

  4. Then we need to get some players that are worse. Manipulate the roster so that we finish last. To finish any higher than last would just be foolish. It will take longer to rebuild if we do not finish last next year and get one of the top two picks.

Tanking is over. Soon as all those season ticket holders had Darcy shown the door. Sabres wont be last or even worse 3 next year whomever TN has to work with. We'll just suck, in the worse 5-10 team range.

  5. One more year of tanking is all that it will take. The best chance to turn the franchise around and be good long term is to get as many high draft picks as possible and build with them. Then add some good young players and you are ready to get to the playoffs and contend. It is not about contending for the 8th playoff spot next year, it is about contending for the stanley cup for 5-10 years. Tanking for two years through roster manipulation is the best way to do that. We've already seen what happens when you build to make the playoffs without high draft picks, that is why we are in the mess we are in.

  6. The tank has one more year. Given the traffic Ehroff and Myers generated at the deadline I wouldn't be surprised if they were traded at the draft. It all depends on the return. Stafford and Stewart will probably be gone at the draft or at the trade deadline next season. Ennis or Hodgson has to go at some time as they are too similar.

One more winter at Valley Forge. Stay the course!

  7. I'm sure they'll sign some token free agents, but as for seeing better hockey next year I highly doubt it. It just doesn't make any sense to be this bad this year and to not be this bad or worse next year. Next years draft is a lot better than this years top to bottom and has McDavid and Eichel which appear to be franchise players. To sign enough free agents to not finish last would be quite silly. Finish last, hope NYI defer their pick to next year and they finish next to last. At worst we get pick 2 and 3 in the draft get one of McDavid or Eichel and the next best player in the draft. After next season the Sabres then sign a couple of free agents and make the playoffs in 2015-2016 season and go up from there.

  8. All of the youngsters should spend one more season in the AHL or juniors next year. Play well for their team, play in all situations, maybe play for a championship. The Sabres should end up with pick 1 or 2 in the draft again. The following season the youngsters come up, the Sabres get a couple of decent free agents and attempt to make the playoffs. The tank is over and with good drafting and a little luck the playoffs are a possibility. But not next year. Stay the course. Tank one more year.

What really would be funny is after all of this the kids come up next year and do well enough to end up 15th in nhl :D

Those of you that think this will never happen, Some of them are capable of that, we better keep them down another year.

  9. Just listened to Nolan's presser after practice this morning. Based on Nolan's comments I wouldn't be surprised if Stafford is one of the captains or the captain for the rest of the season. Nolan was impressed with how Stafford handled himself after the Miller/Ott trade and Nolan also said the captaincy would be passed around.

  10. The idea that PLF would put things in place and then walk away doesn't seem right. A planned walk away doesn't occur 5 days before one of the most important dates to the organization this season, the trade deadline. What goes on that everyone can't be big boys and PLF resigns after the tradeline? If PLF is leaving in mutual agreement, why no press conference to announce it? Obviously something wasn't quite right in Hockey Heaven and we'll probably never know exactly what went on.

  11. Last night I wasn't sold on the trade. I thought they could have gotten more for miller and ott. After thinking it over I think it was fair for both teams and Miller. They took care of Miller by trading him to a team that has a legitimate chance to win a cup. I think that looks good on the franchise. If the conditional pick becomes a 1st, Murray won round one.

Real happy with this trade. Miller was a good pro and although I didn't care for his attitude, he was a good player for this team. Ott I hope returns.

Onwards and upwards. Love the jersey, not the player wearing it.

Now stop winning so much boys!!!!

  12. Unless the Sabres can make the playoffs and win a round there is no reason not to tank next year. It would be foolish not to tank and get a shot at either McDavid and Eichel in the draft. I find it hard to believe that Miller would want to stay with the Sabres but he may not have much choice even in FA.

  13. Bigger based on the anguish that would happen in Canada. Canadians consider hockey theirs. To think that Latvia could beat them would be unthinkable to Canadians. The planes carrying the players back might not be allowed to land in Canada.

    Right on.

Exactly what I said as I was watching that PP.

    Bigger.

And the anguish in Canada will be enormous.

    Go Latvia go!

  14. Great start. Shots 16-5 Canada and score is tied 1-1. Really pulling for Latvia as I love underdogs. The longer Latvia can hang close the tougher it gets for Canada. Latvia has nothing to lose. Canada loses and they might as well join Russia in Siberia.

Anybody watching How is Girgs doing?

  15. Read this from www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/GARTHS-CORNER/Halak-Bottom/6/58038 near the bottom is this description of Girgs.

"Buffalo Sabres 19 year-old rookie Zemgus Girgensons, who scored his first Olympic goal against King Hank Lundqvist in Saturday’s loss to Sweden, is capable of throwing his team on his back and fighting like a “Braveheart”. Zemgus will give the Swiss cold sweats because he never stops competing inside a shift. He fore checks like a hostile, hungry rottweiler chasing a mail man off his front porch."

  16. Grigorenko still seems to have the most talent of anyone in the farm system. Hopefully, he can put the hard work part of it together with the talent. I may be wrong but it just doesn't seem that the Sabres have that #1 winger or centerman in the drafted players. Seems to be lots of #2 and #3 line players. The defensive prospects seem to be better as a group though. There are more than enough that could be top four defensemen in the coming years. I'm hoping they draft the top forward in the next two drafts, assuming the tank is on again next year, and we can get a couple of top line forwards.

  17. Zadorov should not be in the NHL next year. The Sabres will be bad again. Maybe worse than this year. All of the youngsters should be in either the AHL or in juniors and none of them should be moved up to the Sabres. Keep them out of that type of situation. Let them play all situations and get lots of ice time. And those that are in Rochester maybe even compete for a Calder cup. The Sabres tank one more season, get #1 or #2 in the draft and then start the rebuild at the NHL level. Populate the Sabres with 3rd and 4th line players and maybe some of the older AHLers and tank one more time.

I think Zadorov is a Sabre next year. That seems to be the plan IMPO and I think he will be just fine.
