  1. First post here....

I watch every game and this is the absolute worst PP in the NHL right now. Embarrassing and pathetic! I mean a breakaway and 2 on 1 on the freakin PP!!

Not a geat first post but just venting.

Not defending how bad the PP is, but to be fair Vancouver has the best PK in the league.

    What island in Hawaii?

  2. big trouble now.

Canucks are the Devils of the West almost.

Their pp is a joke. Honestly.

Sabourin has zero NHL wins. Just like the Sabres to help get that changed around.

Shots are what, 15-5 canucks in the 2nd. They played last night. Brutal.

A little help from the video review doesn't hurt either.

  3. We need to try and take advantage of the fact that they are playing 2 games in 2 nights, and had to travel last night. Throw everything we can on net in the 1st, and hope to grab a lead. Force them to open things up and then skate them into the ground. If the Sabres score early I think they can win this one easily. If Vancouver scores first, it's going to be a long night.

  4. No argument here, hoplesly. Not speaking as a Sabres homer, but I really thought Miller should have gotten consideration as the no. 1 star, even with the loss - but I would have been OK with him no. 2 and THomas no. 1.

    Savard? 1 G in the 1st period, -1, that's a no. 1 star game?

IMHO, 1st star was a toss up between Miller and Thomas. Miller let one in in the shootout, but Thomas wasn't really tested in the shootout. Miller's spectacular save was better than Thomas' spectacular save.

Another observation about NESN...Anyone else sick of hearing about the Savard snub? He has slightly better numbers than Briere, not significant enough to get bent out of shape about.

  5. Exiled, I would say wait until you see the effort on all three SO attempts - you'll probably change your mind. They didn't really test Thomas at all - he didn't really have to move to make any of the saves.

On a side note, my three Sabres stars for the game:

    1. Miller

    2. Miller Roy - 1 G, 1 A; was flying all over the ice for most of the 2nd & 3rd, and kept challenging Chara...

    3. Miller Paille - jumped up and looked like he had been with the team all year; 1 A, took regular shifts and never looked out of place

After the countless big saves he made, I wanted to give all three stars to Ryan, because he really stole a point for the Sabres today.

    Looking forward to Wednesday night...

I honestly thought giving Savard 1st star was an insult to both goaltenders.

  6. I really hope that the team was trying to exploit a weak spot of Thomas' in the shootout. Seems that way since all 3 took almost the exact same shot. If not, than it was a pretty disappointing effort by all 3 in the shootout.

For those of us who had NESN, is it me or did they try to make Thomas' saves in the shootout sound a lot more spectacular than they really were.

  7. I'm listening at work ... RJ just lost his mind over that save ... it can't possibly live up to the description ... he'd have to have caught it in his teeth.

I think it really did live up to the description. I don't know for sure. I have NESN today, but wow.

  8. Is anyone else watchin the game on the nesn feed (nhl center ice)? If they show the goal at the end of the period one more time I think that I'm going to puke.

Don't worry, NESN will come up with 10 or 15 other things that will make you want to puke before the end of the game.

  9. Nobody's TURNING on them. Just calling a spade a spade. Since when can't you be critical of a team when they are not playing well. <_<

PS This isn't a recent problem. The EFFORT hasn't been there most of the season,.

It's ok to be critical, but everyone is going into full scale panic mode.

  10. Summary after one period...

Good...Unbelievably lucky to be tied 2-2

Bad...Just about everything else. Two horrible PP's, outskated, outplayed, outworked, etc...

I don't want to hear the term "hardest working team in hockey" used to refer to the Sabres again this year.

Stuff? What stuff? The fact that they don't want to give a solid EFFORT? Lindy has a problem that seems to be growing and he better nip it in the bud before it gets out of control.

PS Max, Drury(even with his assist) and Briere all INVISIBLE in the first period.

Every team is going to have bad stretches. Every athlete is going to have bad stretches during the year. I'm not happy with how the team has been playing either. I'm just not so quick to turn on them.

  11. And have lost 4 of our last 6. It's nice to point to the last ten games, but seeing as we're coming off back-to-back losses twice in our last six games, I'm not going to act like everything is OK, this is just a bump in the road, or whatever.

Like I said, I'm not pounding the panic button yet, but I'm not going to be all Pollyana about this team's play as of late.

I'm not saying they're playing great lately, just saying that it's not the end of the world. Stuff like this happens to every team, every year. I think everyone needs to step back and realize that.

  12. I am trying to keep things in perspective, but just like Cubs fans, us Buffalo fans are always watching with baited breath - always waiting for the other shoe to drop....

FWIW, I wouldn't call this a similar team. As we have dissected quite a bit lately, this team is softer than last year's version - guys like McKee, Dumont and Grier did provide much more grit than this year's team has.

I'm not pressing the panic button yet, but I am also not ignoring the warning signs and the little flashing red "alert" lights going off...

I think the argument about grit is valid, but a bit overstated:

Last year everyone was saying the same thing. The Sabres don't have enough grit to succeed. They will run into a team with grit and not be able to compete. We saw that in the first round last year...I think we did just fine.

Another thought comes to mind for the "we need more grit" people. That is not this team's style. Even if the team adds a few grit guys, they are not going to win playing that style. There are some other things to keep in mind. The three losses everyone complains about are:

Jay McKee: Spacek was a great replacement IMHO. He doesn't have as much grit, but he weighs more than McKee, he moves the puck better and skates better.

Mike Grier: This loss hurt IMHO, but I think Gaustad has answered the call in the last few weeks when he moved into Grier's old spot with Drury.

JP Dumont: This is the least persuasive one IMHO. The team succeeded without Dumont in the lineup for about half the season last year.

Something that people don't consider: Mair adds a lot of grit to this team. He missed a significant portion of last season, and most of the playoffs.

When Connolly comes back, the team will effectively be able to roll 4 lines again. If he's back before playoff time, I think this is much more important than any gritty player can add. When other teams shorten their benches in the playoffs and we roll 4 lines, it's going to be very hard for them to keep up, especially in a OT game or a long series.

The motto during the Philly series last year was "You can't hit what you can't catch. I think it still holds true, and many have lost sight of that.
