besides you, why aren't we talking more about him?

He's not as flashy and doesn't have the draft pedigree. But I agree with a bunch here that he's more likely to be playing in the bottom-6 this year than the younger guys in the [AW]HL.  Those other players probably benefit more getting lots of top-line work in their leagues. The Sabres are *finally* at a point where they don't need 20 year old high-level offensive prospects playing 3rd and 4th line minutes because there's no one else to put in there, hopefully they'll use that.

Hunter Shepard is looking really good as goaltender for the Hershey Bars. Zach Fucale's there too. I am not a huge fan for spending big bucks on a goalie. By the time they're earning big bucks and they're available, their best days are usually behind them. Look at Bobrovsky, Matt Murray, etc. etc.. But the Sabres don't need an all-world goalie. Look at Adin Hill. He bounced around from team to team before backstopping Vegas to a cup. The key is the big, solid veteran defense and the defensive buy-in at forward. You don't have to be a great goalie to win a cup. You just have to have the right formula as a team.

Those adjustments are necessary regardless though. The data just says that Hellebuyck struggles with the most difficult shots. Dunno why folks would be surprised by this.

All goalies struggle more the more difficult the shot. If the exceptions to that rule are only the truly elite, like Shesterkin, ie their sv% goes down on these chances but not as relatively so, it’s not a mark against acquiring Hellebuyck, unless those guys are available. Hellebuyck’s relative “weakness” in that area is still stronger than the field, the goalies we’ve been rostering of late.

There's struggles like everyone else, and there's struggles *more* than everyone else, which is the implication here. While it seems like a goaltender is plug and play, some are better in some scenarios than others, and if you team tends to give up chances in certain scenarios it helps if your goaltender isn't below average when that happens.

Once upon a time, there was a great analysis here on why Ryan Miller struggled in St Louis despite being solid here. I forget the details, but it was something like Miller liked to play at the top of the crease and relied on his D to shut down shots from the sides, where St Louis' D did not do that. So goals were pouring in on passes to the low circle. I honestly forget if this was the issue or the other way around, but it was a subtle observation and one of the best pieces of analysis I saw anywhere.

I don't disagree with this, but I heard an interesting talk on the 32 thoughts podcast pointing out that Vegas only had ONE draft pick in their line up that won the cup. The gist of the talk was that the most important thing in this era is having a place where "players want to play" and the southern teams in the U.S. all have a huge advantage being in states with no state tax. So they were wondering if more teams were going to try to follow their model and move away from the old draft your own idea. In that sense, Pittsburgh may be a candidate to try that even without the state tax advantages.

Did the podcast bring up taxes? It seems like those are two different things, maybe even in opposition in some cases. A place where the player wants to play isn't directly related net take-home pay. Sure, for some players that will be a big part of the calculus. But the Sabres have two players (so far 🤞) that have taken less money in a high-tax state to play. For normal people state taxes may be a sticking point, but when you're in the 1% of earners it becomes less of an issue for a lot of people.

Maybe they want to bring an E franchise closer to Buffalo. Elmira? Binghamton? Maybe Buffalo and have them play in Harborcenter?

Binghamton would seem to be a good fit, they (and Elmira) are in the FPHL (the what?) right now, but Bingo is a much larger city but still only three hours by car to Buffalo or Rochester. Erie PA might fit, although I'm not sure how much competition with the CHL Otters there'd be for entertainment $$.

The best option would be to swap with Columbus so they have AHL Cleveland and Cincinnati, and Buffalo gets the Kalamazoo Wings. They could have an alternate jersey with chicken wings. Even better would be a new team in Binghamton who currently has an FPHL team.

That'd be cool. I lived in Binghamton when they were the AHL B-Sens. Lots of local Sens fans weren't happy when Pominville scored, lol.

But really, isn't that exactly what the Buffalo Bills did in Orchard Park?  NY Giants & Jets in the Meadowlands?  The Cowboys in Arlington?  Is there something fundamentally different about the NFL compared to the NHL that favors suburban stadiums?  I thought for a moment of number of games played (every NFL game is "an event") but the Texas Rangers baseball team has a stadium in Arlington next to the Cowboys stadium, and they play twice as many games as an NHL team.

Established teams can pull that off. Plus, Buffalo is constrained by the lake and border. Putting it in OP is probably easier as far more people live in suburbs east of Buffalo than downtown. Now, if you wanted to argue that the Bills should be in Lancaster, Amherst, or Cheektowoga, I'd fully agree. It's central to the local population and easier for Rochestarians to reach.

Yes, the Meadowlands seems to be about 30 minutes from NYC but it looks to be less than 10 miles from NYC on the map and there are 11MM people in NYC/on LI plus you have all of NJ and eastern PA to draw from as well.

And Arlington is a suburb of 2 fairly large cities - both Dallas and Fort Worth.  It's not like the old Texas Stadium ended up in Plano or Ennis which to Dallas (and especially Fort Worth) is more akin to what Sunrise is to Miami.

Would say it would be a closer analogy to placing the Corel Centre in Kanata but even that was at least in a traditional market.

The Meadowlands is right on the NJ Turnpike and there's a NJ Transit (train) stop on the edge of the parking lots. It's relatively easy for anyone in NYC to get there (subway to Penn Station, NJT to the Meadowlands (2 stops or something like that). The entire state on NJ seems to be oriented to the turnpike corridor, so there are plenty of trains running between Trenton and the Meadowlands. The primary people who lose out on that deal are the Long Island people, they have to do LI rail road and then NJT, but even that's not the end of the world.

If anything, Batavia is a good parallel, but with Buffalo and Rochester are nowhere as big as the other cities we're talking about so it's not 100% dense suburb the whole way between them.

I'n retired and have several friends who are also retired. They bring up the WNY/Buffalo weather "it sucks ! " every single time I go out with them and won't let it go. Drone on about it excessively.  All have the means to relocate (which I suggest) and they dismiss it immediately.

I love our weather from May to October and spend a ton of time out on my deck. I can get through the winters just fine. Even with taxes, I find it very easy to live here financially. Tons for me to do. Traveling throughout the country in my younger days, I wasn't a fan of most other places I visited and was fortunate enough to find solid employment later in my hometown. We are all different and all respect to everyone.

I'm trying to figure out if it's just making conversation or are they actually that miserable. They never used to be like that. It's draining. After a couple hours, I have to get up and leave them.  Ugh..

Some people aren't happy, and need to complain. But I suspect complaining about the weather is a placeholder for what they're really unhappy about, and that's something that's not acceptable to complain about. As you say, there are solutions available. As the sage Daniel Tiger teaches us, "try to solve the problem yourself, and you'll feel proud".

Complaint: coming back from a few days of fun-work trip followed a few days by solo vacation, it's hard to get back into normal life. I realize this is a crappy complaint since I had a great time last week. Bicycling in Colorado is a blast.

No DVR, and because I have T-Mobile for internet, Spectrum views me as out of the area, and I only get a subset of the channels when streaming.

That sounds like an FCC complaint in the making.

It’s hard to imagine pro sports in North America doing relegations but I guess it’s common in Europe.

The logistics of relegating Anaheim to the AHL and promoting Coachella to the NHL seem insurmountable. If Arizona plays out of a university rink, I guess it could be done.
Huge downgrade for the Ducks but if they retained their talent you think they would come back the following year. That’s an interesting idea too. Do they keep all of their guys under contract or is there an out for guys to play in the NHL? FA would move to play in the NHL.

Zegras and their young stars riding buses and playing in front of small crowds would be a jolt to their egos. It would also be a huge motivation to get back to the big time. The AHL would get a big bump from having NHL stars around.

Bottom teams would dread signing a guy to a big 8 year deal and have to pay that while getting AHL revenue. Same with players, do you want to commit long term to a team that can be relegated?

From what I remember from when Modo was relegated, the players have an out and become FA or something. I'm sure if varies by league/team/contract. Tidbit I didn't remember from before: VO was the top scorer on that Modo team.

You know, I wonder if, rather than tanking, the last place team (or possibly lottery winner to try to prevent a race to the bottom; or maybe if there is a sustained period of futility over several seasons) could be given the option of a team "reset" that would essentially be a liquidation and reconstitution of the team.  Possibly have a "fire sale" of player contracts, with adjustment to AAV to account for underperforming players and possibly the league makes up the rest or something.  The team gets to franchise tag a small number of their players and keep them (2?  3?) and the rest are dispersed throughout the league.  Then they get to build a team back up similar to the expansion rules.

In Europe for some leagues there's relegation.  I see this as something the NHL would do in place of that.

Yes, I know it's not very feasible or likely.  Just kind of thinking out loud.

    That's kinda wild, and fun.

I did count his last three seasons. He was a 40 pt player for two of the three. I think I’m good here. 🍻

At 40 points this year, he'd be around 160th in forwards. On average, that's 5th of 6th best on a team (160/32). If he'll sign something about $5M/yr you do it; having 2nd line production on your 3rd line is how good teams work. And that's 40 points, not the 59 points he actually scored this season which puts him coincidentally #59 in points. That is solidly 1st line (!!!). Now, if he was playing like a floaty winger (ahem, VO) maybe you don't, but he's also playing a solid all-around game.

Yes.   I get called "boss" or "dude" or something similar by young people on occasion.   I don't like being called "dog".   I was called that once and I corrected the young man.  Typically I don't say a thing if I sense they are just being friendly or polite.   It is on parents to teach their kids how to address elders and how to show respect, otherwise they learn it from other places or they don't learn it at all.

Possible that they *are* showing respect, just in a different way. Also, you're the man now, dog!

Ugh. I finally got it back in October. Wasn't too bad, honestly. I completely lost taste and smell for a few days, which was really weird. You start tricking yourself into thinking you can taste stuff, and then when it comes back you question whether everything tastes the same.

Thanks for digging into it. My sense is that, in recent times, the start date for the NBA finals is set once the playoffs start. Shoot - it might be set once the regular season schedule is released.

    Same goes for the NHL.

    NP.

It might be. In terms of TV and partners, I'm sure they love being able to schedule things well head of time. Might just be my perspective, but spectator sports aren't the "drop everything and watch" events they used to be, so it's possible the people surrounding the leagues are less willing to throw everything into chaos based on the the outcomes of games; they want things more solid for marketing and scheduling.

One of the coolest things about the movie *The Princess Bride* is that Andre the Giant drank two entire cases of beer on the way to the set once.  And, of course, he wasn't able to perform very well.  So they had to delay the scenes he was supposed to be in.

From what I've read, his drinking ability was legendary. Body weight matters, lol. I also read, being French, his command of English was well below what the director/producers expected so his scenes took forever.

Just the other day, we mentioned TPB to RosePie and she said, "Ick, that sounds like a romancey movie". We laughed and told her that's almost a direct line out of the movie.

Well, the Miami-FLL-Boca metro area has about 6.1MM people, while the Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater metro area has about 3.2MM people.

Certainly it's less of a hockey market at present than Tampa is.  I'm hoping that this year's success will springboard it to reaching Tampa's level in a few years if the team stays good.

I'd be amazed if Tampa had more Northern transplants than Miami.

Ain’t no “if” about it. Now that I honed in on better search terms — Denver Lakers sweep “June 1” — I find dozens of news stories published late on May 22 or early on May 23 that all say that the NBA Finals would begin on June 1st.

    image.thumb.png.7f0c014cf6273999086cb7c8bbe4d991.png

I seem to remember someone complaining about how the NBA teams had over a week off before their finals in the last several years. Not sure if this was the year I'm thinking of, but in 2019 the GSW played on May 20th completing a sweep, and the Raptors won their series 4-2 on May 25th. Game one of the finals was May 31st. This was the first year I looked at.

2018 both conference series went to 7, so only 3 days off. Finals started May 31st

    2017 series ended May 22 (4) and 25 (5), Finals started June 1st

    2016 series ended May 27 (6) and 30 (7), Finals started June 2nd

    2015 series ended May 26 (4) and 27 (5), Finals start June 4th

Really looks like the NBA schedules to finals 2-3 days after the last possible conference final game ahead of time based on the spread of dates, I'm guessing the first three series start a couple days after the previous round wraps up. 2015 the first two rounds both had a series that went 7 games, so that's probably one of the latest starts you'd see.

Leaving aside your other observation about Florida, and fervently hoping that these nuggets don't increasingly find their way into your posts as we approach 2024, I will note that Tampa is at or close to the top of the NHL in attendance every year -- and Miami is a much bigger and wealthier market, with more Northern (US and GWN) transplants.

So while I agree that Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/Del Boca Vista won't become a hockey town like Buffalo once was or Montreal is permanently, I would like to see it become a hockey town in the vein of a smaller NYC -- i.e. one where hockey isn't by any means the biggest show in town, but where hockey nevertheless has a dedicated, passionate and multitudinous fan base that fills the arena with a raucous crowd every night.

    If the nugget fits...
