  1. He did not admit that they were tanking and wasn't baited into anything. In fact, he said that the tank plan doesn't work because coaches and players want to win.

I didn't hear the interview but loved that comment. I interpreted it as: some other team might be worse, stupid @#)*$@ lottery, injury to the draftee, etc.

  3. What do you mean by lakeshore?

Oh, sorry, thats the name of the rink in Greece/ROC.

You can still do pretty much all of that stuff (except maybe the Harbour Centre stuff if TP only wants to hire former Sabres) anywhere and bring in an extra $7 mil. For that extra $7 mil he could buy a personal plane that could fly the grandparents out anytime, and would pay for a nice guest house where they could stay, or the plane could take the grandkids out to WNY to visit the grandparents whenever they want.

Don't ruin my fairy tale man!

  4. How about a home town discount? Instead of $45 million from the highest bidder take $38 million from Sabres and you get to play in your hometown (sorta), raise your kids with their grandparents involved, cement yourself in Sabres history when you lead them to the cup, latch on to Pegula's vision for hockey in Western NY for the next 30 years and have a permanent cushy job at the Harbor Center when you are 50 "assistant director of strategic planning for players and coaches on Tuesdays and Thursdays", Open a franchise of restaurants or car dealerships whatever else you are interested, buy Lakeshore and remodel that dump because you are a nice guy. It could be a long list compared to a deal in Florida or Nashville or west coast. I wonder if they think long term, post NHL. I think I would. Their agent probably doesn't.

  5. Agreed. I'd think the people complaining are the ones that like a ton of hitting, fighting, and 2-1 games. The Olympics are almost like an all-star game but the players care and play hard; that's some good stuff. I just wish I had some sort of DVR/cable to record the games.

Right and the bigger ice surface = more TiMe AnD SpACe. I haven't watched much international play, I wonder how they'll call interference. Hopefully closer to 05-06 than today.

If NBC is smart they'll have it available online to stream after the game.

  6. 2012 Focus SE here, 5 speed, 5 door, drives tight like a euro car, it's under powered but priced accordingly. We've had 2 small probs - heated seat not working, and the a/c is weak. The seat pad was replaced with a quick dealer visit. The a/c is what it is I'm told. Overall we really like it, but now she wants an ST! My inlaws have the same Focus model but auto trans and have had a lot of probs with it requiring many visits to dealer to get software updates. I think it's finally tolerable for them but yeah I'd avoid 2012 automatic.

Good luck! Sounds like you are due for it.

  7. Heck, include Girardi in the deal too, he is only from Welland which is less then 30 minutes from the arena if the bridge is clear

(Also IIRC, he is just finishing up building a nice big place on the Niagara Parkway in Niagara Falls, close to the Niagara Falls/Fort Erie Town Line)

Ellis is from Welland too, Konopka is from NOTL which is part of Niagara, they could have gone after Clutterbuck from Welland last offseason, Bissonette in Phoenix and built a really tough/physical bottom 6 all from the Niagara Area. John Scott wasn't born in Niagara, but he played Minor Hockey in Thorold. Nathan Horton is from welland also with Paille. Lots of Options for "local" guys

Nice. Do we count allow the Canadians as home town? 4th line galore here. I wish the Amerks would do more of it. They usually carry 1 guy, 3 or 4 would be better, and help fill seats.

  8. Interesting. Although I wouldn't think they would put the (& Family) part on the sign if it was just him in town. I should have asked them when I was there. Oh well, I will be back there again soon. I saw it on a Saturday morning while driving to Auburn for a hockey tournament. I don't recall it being there Sunday night when I ate there for dinner (this was a week ago).

I reached out to the grapevine, good source says he did in fact just build a very large home in Mendon. Sugar Packets used to make that commute for game nights.

I agree, don't give up any players. Sign as UFA. Then mix in either or both Giontas, Dustin Brown, Orpik, who else, Kennedy for 4th line? All WNY team. Would be so awesome.

  9. Well, he might have. I think he moved to Mendon recently. There was a sign on the side of a local restaurant "The Cottage" that said "Welcome NY Ranger Captain, Ryan Callahan, and family to Mendon." I couldn't figure any event going on in the area so I assumed he might have moved his family there.

Wonder if his kids go to public school? (does he have kids?) They'd be in the same district as mine.

Bartlett is his agent. Maybe they were just having lunch there.

    (from Monday)

Callahan's agent, Stephen Bartlett of the Sports Consulting Group based in Pittsford, New York, said he and the Rangers have had "ongoing discussions in the hopes that we can get something done," and that while there have been some "detours" at points, he remains "optimistic."

Interesting. I was at the Cottage for this dandy.

    Quality local pub.

  11. Okay, get out your tin-foil hats, because I'm going to lay a doozy on y'all:

It's commonly known that the Sabres TV ratings, even when they're mediocre, are among the tops in the league. When the Sabres do well, their ratings shoot up, especially outside the market.

Pegula is building his hockey kingdom downtown and will certainly be one of the USA's premier hockey facilities when complete.

Pegula, finally, has figured out he had to assemble an all-star front office to manage his team, and, I think it's undeniable that he has done so.

The NHL being what it is, political and bureaucratic, what if, with all of the above elements coming together, what if the NHL decides to "help" the Sabres along? The Sabres now have a FO filled with individuals with political clout, and that clout combined could be quite persuasive. The TV numbers, the facilities and all the attention/money that will bring in. All of this might very well overwhelm the NHL to the point where they feel they "have" to help the Sabres along and, if the cards line up at the drafts, the first picks "just happen to fall their way"?

Anyone else think this is possible, let alone likely? To me, it depends on how truly political the NHL is internally, and if it's as political as I think it may be, then I can see something like this unfolding.

You would also have to believe that the draft drawing can be fixed, which I certainly do, AND that the NHL would do something like that, which I'm not certain of, unless, again, the politics are such that they would.

So do you think all the owners would be in on it too? That's where I stop. If I'm the owner in Ottawa or FL who's struggling, why would I want to help out TP? High tide? Not that high though.

But to entertain it...if Miller were to stay and US wins gold...the momentum will be sick.

  12. 90% of the time I don't think heart or battle was the reason for the on-ice product this season. That's probably a good chunk of why I'm so ho-hum about this. But as I said earlier, as long as it's interim, then whatever.

Same. I see effort. With a few exceptions (leino, myers) its a talent/youth issue. Hopefully Nolan can squeeze a little more out of them for entertainment's sake, but not too much, the current path to the #1 pick would be best.

  13. HARBORCENTER HOCKEY PLANS TAKING SHAPE: http://sabres.nhl.co...vid=DL|BUF|home

Also announced were plans for youth partnership and coaching development programs and the expansion of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres Youth Organization from one team to seven teams, encompassing several youth hockey age groups, to be overseen by Larry Playfair and Michael Peca.

This is going to be so good. My understanding of youth hockey right now in western NY is that it's really fractured. Too many options for AAA instead of one clear choice that is often affiliated with the local pro team. Some of the the best Roc kids have typically drifted east to Syr to play with the Nationals. Now western NY will have one well funded and stable team to represent. See: http://myhockeyrankings.com/rank.php?y=2013&a=2&v=113 Buffalo will be at the top of that list for Squirt and PeeWee in a few years I bet. Currently the best PeeWee minor team for Buffalo is the Regals at #36 and best Rochester is Grizzlies at #38. Syracuse #3!
